Don't forget that any change in the settings requires reastarting the emulator.
Tried resetting and all that malarky. Took me a while to get the thing stable and prevent it from crashing because I didn't setup the CD drive correctly. Image below shows what I see. It's visually showing that all buttons are being held down. But while this screenshot was taken I was only holding down MouseButton1 (Which is set to Button Circle for Player 1) Link to image

Anyone else have input troubles? I put my PS2 controller into my PC via a USB adapter, and it seems that no input at all is accepted by the emulator? I cannot get past the damned intro of Point Blank. It also crashes if I change Player 1's input from controller to Keyboard. (Player 2 is still set to keyboard) Even though I've changed the first controller input to Segu Direct Pad Pro Driver 0.4 and configured it... And upon changing it to mouse input ultimately lets it work but the movie file doesn't record anything.

Would it be interesting at all if this game had a TAS? I quite enjoyed playing this game when I was younger and there was a few things I always wondered if it was possible, such as hitting ALL of the targets at the end of the game for all of the fireworks, and just what the largest score was. Would this be entertaining?

Also, now that there's Lua support it's entirely possible to write a Lua script that loops through the level's screens and dumps out an image of it.
But this would have the character actively moving at the period, would it not? So objects such as badniks (in this case) would not always be in the same location?

The camera is not controlled with the joypad buttons... it uses IJKL. (also . to refocus on sonic and , to teleport sonic to screen center) You said it wouldn't move no matter what you pressed so I thought you had, like, tried pressing keys other than your pad assigned ones.
Sorry for the mis-understanding. I was reading through it and only saw reference to keyup (something similar to it anyway) I had asked for how to control it earlier but it seems nobody wanted to answer me. Also, it doesn't seems to be placing things wrong in some fashion, I guess this was a newly implemented hack which is still being worked on? the below screenshot was simply done by moving around.

The project should be compiled with VS2005, not VS2008. (They both have free versions available.) However, I would be interested in seeing a screenshot of this problem at the moment since your description is somewhat vague. (are you in fullscreen mode? is it maximized? can you resize the window to make it better? is it drawing outside of the window? does it happen with all the different render modes? what exactly does "whenever it applies a rendering mode" mean, does that mean it only happens while a render mode message is onscreen?)
I only have 2008, also there should not be any compatibility issues between the two. Freshly compiled Gens.exe, no hacks enabled. Initial load. Sonic 1 Jap rom. Img here Same loading, Chosen a different rendering mode. Img here Yes the window is still resizable, but upon choosing a new render mode I have to resize it once again.

I still have a very odd bug that I've had from the beginning though; when compiling gens from scratch VS always fails to link pwm.asm. if I try building again (not rebuilding) it links fine and finishes building gens.

Tried the SonicMapHack, looking through the source I need ScrollLock enabled. However even if I do, it doesn't matter what I press, the screen will NOT move.

Try going to the project properties->configuration properties->C/C++->optimization and setting "optimization" to "Disabled (/Od)"
Setting them ALL (Gens,lib7zip,MainStar,SubStar) to that does nothing, it still attempts to render itself at the entire available width when changing render mode, but not when initially loading. Compiling in "Debug" status rather than "Release" eliminates this issue but due to it's nature, when launched Gens will have a nice "MS-Dos Prompt" window spawn behind itself.

Seems to only be when I compile it myself.

Could I inquire as to how to initiate a "Sonic Map Dump" ? Also, do I need to combine it with a sonic game define? (I would believe it does) #define S1 #define SONICMAPHACK for example.
I also seem to have some bizzare issue. I've compiled this fine however when I run the created Gens.exe , whenever it applies a rendering mode (even when it's first loading up) it for some bizzare reason takes the entire width of BOTH of my screens. Also, a small F.Y.I. If someone with a newer version of Visual Studio tries to compile this, they will run into a issue because of pwm.c if they simply rename it to pwm1.c in the studio, then it'll compile fine.

But what do you record them at? h264 lossless . then upscale? or what?

What form of video do you go from, uncompressed.. or what codec settings, Joannes? it seems you do have the HD luck that that tutorial page speaks of, it'd be nice if I could finally conquer YouTube's annoying system and get decent quality videos onto the web. Edit Wow, thanks alot. I took one of my already recorded videos ran the process and viola, it's a brilliant quality! Thanks a huge bunch! p.s heres a link to the test video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5H_ZFY_oaA&fmt=22

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UeHnohnQoc - Big Buck Bunny http://www.youtube.com/user/DDRKhat I used the same settings they used in that Big Buck Bunny video. For the input video I recorded completely uncompressed. Then encoded it into mp4 with H.264 compression 100% qulaity @ 2000 kbps (MPEG-4 AAC Stereo 256kbps sound) frame limit of 30 fps. no scale changing.

Mostly a question to the encoders out there. I've had no luck what-so-ever when it comes to encoding video game footage and placing it onto youtube, I've tried following at least 9 different tutorials, the latest one was what supposedly put Big Buck Bunny onto youtube in such a crisp sharp quality, yet my "Sonic the hedgehog" recording videos still come through like crap. So, what do I set as what to try and get a decent quality?

1. Wasn't previously, is now, still having this issue. 2. Definitely Gens10a, no BRAM, with and without the PerfectCD Synchro. Is it perhaps my SegaCD Bios? Accordnig to the bootup screen it's Ver 2.0.0 ? You stop holding start @ 125 frames then start holding again at 132. On my Gens, BIOS does not recognize input until 143, meaning that it would possibly need pushing 11 frames forwards. I tried this with TAS Movie Editor (with ALOT of messing around) and it desyncs right away. I have no idea whats going on. I really do believe its the bios. Edit: Yes. It was my BIOS file. Version 1.1.0 is used for your recording. Nitsuja how difficult would it be for you to provide level layouts? I began working on this myself with debug, layers switched, and manual screen-printing but god it took half an hour just for the first 10-ish seconds of the level.

In regards to this. If upthorn really doesn't mind then I would say go for it. I personally don't wish to TAS this unless I get the go-ahead from the staff, as they all believe it is incomplete and I personally think it would just be throwing salt into the wound to TAS a prematurely released final.

When I delete the SRAM and play fresh, it desynchs in Angel Zone 1. If I then replay the video, it synchs all the way up until Sonic turns hyper. If I try to delete the SRAM and watch again, it'll desynch in Angel Zone 1 again.
Not sure why this is. One sure-fire way to make sure; Close Gens. Delete Sonic 1 Megamix.SRM Download the Sonic 1 Megamix.SRM on the first post. Put the downloaded file in Gen's folder. Set the file as read-only.

This has been tried before I doubt that even the randomness that the Gradius3 recording had will even get this game passed for a TAS.

I'm curious about what crashes you're supposedly getting. I tested that thing very extensively, including on hardware, so I have no idea what's going on. Could you show me an example of where it crashes?
I'll give it another go sometime tonight and get the instruction error then jot it down, I don't really have a way to video record it. Not as far as I'm aware, I'll see if my sisters digital camera does recording well enough, we'll see what happens.
