it shouldn't matter how a run is calculated, be it game-time or real-time, as long as every subsequent run of the game is timed the same way. In some games it's possible to slow down or stop the game's own timer completely, so it isn't always as reliable.

I'm switching to console once I get home. Have the VHS recording ready.

I did a no-save test run of the whole game at my friend's house on her ZSNES (unfortunately she doesn't have the SNES console) and here was the result: overall, this run went very good; I only got hit once at Vulture Culture trying to get past the last set of zingers (which is mostly a matter of luck). I'm still not satisfied, however, because I believe that if I work at it some more I could pull off a 00:47 run. It's back to planning for me...

ugh...alright, here goes: a) Tool-Assisted Run b) Not a legitimate record It can't get any simpler than that. Mister DAN, I don't see why you despise time attacks so much when they can be such a useful tool in legit speedrunning. Have a nice day. -Deviance

glad you asked. I've been really busy this week with university course selection, but I've still managed to push in some DKC time. I'm pretty much done every level at this point, and I'll be home on monday so I can do a full run then. Wish me luck. :)

the speedrunners who utterly despise time attacks are in the minority. There are quite a few legit players out there who find emulated runs a useful tool in assisting the planning of future record attempts. No need to form your own town just yet. :)

if you want an example of how time attacks are misrepresented, go to http://www.retrojunk.com/articles/nes-time-attacks.html . They're making false statements like
It is pretty clear that these people have an unhealthy knowledge of the games they are playing. They know exactly where the bad guys are going to appear, exactly when they need to jump, and precisely where they need to go and the fastest way to get there.
Apart from not crediting who made the runs, they posted incorrect times and labeled Arc's legit Manic Mansion run as a time attack. Heh, the even have my now obsolete smb time attack on there. Both Arc and myself had posted comments about this on that page only to have them deleted shortly after; at least they throw in a subtle link to Bisqwit's site near the end. And yes, the disclaimers at the beginning of the videos have all been removed.

Sparing details makes it look as if there is something to hide. It's important to label these runs properly so that they are distinguished from legit world record attempts. This is the main reason I'm supporting a disclaimer.
you start metioning slowing the game down, rerecords, auto fire buttons and people lose interest as they immedeatly think "hey i could do that if i tried"
but they could do it if they tried. It's much more difficult to replicate a legit run than a time attack. Besides, skill isn't what these runs are demonstrating.

As fast as possible
I believe this category should be removed because every run is played as fast as possible since that's the goal of a time attack. Even if the goal of a run is to take side-quests or to be aesthetic instead of taking the fastest route it should still played "as fast as possible" reaching that goal. Also, it isn't absolutely certain that the run is "as fast as possible" because improvements are always made so it's a bit deceiving. A category is too generalized if over 90% of the runs are already a part of it; it's like making a category called "is a time attack." Edit: why isn't the LoZ time attack listed in the as fast as possible category?

also remember that the pause trick can also be used in other ways such as to pass through enemies; it wouldn't make sense to use the glitch during the level and then stop using it when you reach the boss just because you think it looks boring.

DKC 101% 48min!! (46!!!! on ROM)
so he did it legitamately in 48 mins? I'm guessing that's with saving. Interesting thought, if someone ever did manage to get 46:00 in a pure speedrun, it would be so amazing that there wouldn't be any need for a time attack of this game.

without, but it would require the run to be flawless.

it's with Enguarde, getting hit in a way that allows me to pass the last mincer quickly and get Enguarde right back again a couple seconds later. It's hard to tell I did it on purpose, looks more like I made a mistake.

I wasn't going to do this challenge of level 6, the whole idea of TSA's route got me interested. :)

How does entering the expert code make the game any harder? If anything, for a speedrun player it would make things easier not having those extra barrels in your way.

Anyone care to do Level 6 starting-ending with zero keys, 8 bombs, and the white sword ignoring the wand? I'm interested in seeing how much time is saved doing it without the magical sword. (I deleted my old run of this)

Throughout the race, there are many times when he rolls and then jumps in order to save time. Do you know if this would save time in DKC?
I haven't timed it to the millesecond, but roll jumping is slightly faster than running. There are few places in DKC where it will save you considerable time roll-jumping instead of running though, and in order to work the roll shouldn't be too long or too short otherwise running is faster (works best on flat surfaces). In many cases, rolling alone is faster than roll jumping. I abuse the roll a lot in my run and use it to clear segments of levels quickly; in Orangutan Gang, Snapdragon didn't use the roll down slopes which gives you a boost of speed. Roll jumping works best over pitfalls and is almost always better than standard jumping.
Btw, how many more levels do you still need to practice, and what do you think the time of your speed run will be?
I just finished Blackout Basement today and am able to play it in complete darkness. I have about 5 more levels to practice before I can make test runs of the whole game. So far, I can do every level faster than SnapDragon except for the pre-set speed ones like Trick Track Trek. Yesterday, I found a way to shave off another 15-20 seconds in Oil Drum Alley. In the least, I'll be able to pull of a 49 minute run, but my goal is to get a hitless 48 run. SnapDragon's time is very difficult to beat which is why I assume it has remained unchallenged for so long. I'll be ready to record my run by as early as next week. Edit: I just found a trick to save time in Poison Pond that involves getting hit. Looks like this can't be a hitless run, but one where "I don't lose any Kongs."

heh, at that rate, you'll have grandchildren by the time you can play someone else's nes roms legally, provided you're still alive.

I won't use it in my speedrun because it is a teleport glitch that SDA and TG won't allow, and yes, also because of the increased real time play.

and then go back and take the warp so you can start in the middle of the level.
ok, I see what you mean now. But after you warp, you'll need to remember get the bonus rooms at the start of the orangutan gang level as well. This means you'll have to get the last three bonus rooms, beat the level, re-enter the level, get the first couple of bonus rooms, and then start-select exit. If going by the game timer, it saves around 10 seconds.
