Every flash game is rather short, relatively easy to beat, and usually very glitchy. Doing a flash game as a speedrun is not a good idea to begin with. I just mentioned M vs. M because it's an interesting concept and a very well programmed flash game. heh, what's next, speedruns of Java games? :|

If you're going to do a speed run of a flash game, make it Megaman vs. Metroid.

those look a little grainy, and they don't show locations of small keys, enemies, or treasures. A map made with actual screenshots like the ones on zelda-infinite.com would be a little easier to read.

Does anyone know of somewhere I could get a map of the ALttP overworld?
try getting one here. I'm still looking for good detailed maps of Dark World dungeons though, like the Light World ones found here. Btw, do you have irc? It would help in discussing routes on there.

Here's a quick outline I've made of TSA's route in his public video: Light World 1.Sewers 2.Sword 3.Hyrule Castle 4.Boomerang 5.Lamp 6.Eastern Palace 7.100 Rupees from dungeon chest 8.Bow 9.Pegasus Shoes, 100 rupees and bombs from Sahasrahla's room. 10.Book of Mudora 11.Desert Palace 12.Power Glove 13.Mirror 14.Tower of Hera 15.Moon Pearl 16.Master Sword 17.Hyrule Castle Tower Dark World 18.110 rupees to Kiki 19.Palace of Darkness 20.Magic Hammer 21.Shovel 22.Flute 23.Play the Flute to Kakariko wooden bird 24.300 rupees (chest in Village of Outcast) 25.Blind's Hideout 26.Titan's Mitt 27.Rescue blacksmith's partner 28.Tempered Sword (-10 rupees) 29.Skeleton Forest 30.Fire Rod 31.Quake Medallion 32.Zora's Flippers (-500 rupees) 33.Ether Medallion 34.Ice Rod 35.Flooded Palace 36.Hook Shot 37.Misery Mire 38.Cane of Somaria 39.Ice Lake Cavern 40.Blue Mail (why?) 41.Big Bomb (-100 rupees) 42.Silver Arrows 43.Golden Sword 44.Turtle Rock 45.Mirror Shield 46.Tower of Ganon 47.Pyramid of Power The routes within the dungeons would have to be planned as well since they are much more vast than LoZ. The game becomes a lot less linear once you enter the Dark World, so the order of the dungeons needs to be optimized. Keep in mind that this isn't TSA's fastest route, it is just the one in the SDA video. A couple mistakes already stand out to me, like getting the Blue Mail and some imperfect routes in the dungeons costing a few minutes, but I'm sure TSA is already aware of that now since his fastest time is 1:42:17.

Is there that much need for savestates/replays?
TSA told me that he actually wants us to do an ALttP time attack. It could lead to discoveries of tricks that would assist in speedruns of the game. Exactly how much time can be saved I'm not sure, but first we must devise the route.

Why should the author's motive be important? For example, if I made an amazing video, but my motive was to "prove that I'm the master of the universe," how do my intentions change the video? You can't tell why the person made a time attack by just watching it, so the importance of ego puzzles me; what if Phil instead said that his point was to show perfection rather than aesthetics, would the video have been accepted? I think we should judge the quality of the author's video apart from his or her character, but maybe it's just me...

Is anyone interested on planning a route for this game? It won't be for a time attack of course since the appropriate software is currently unavailable, but I believe the optimal route for a speedrun may yet to be discovered. After reviewing TSA's video, and refreshing my memory on many aspects of the game, I believe that although the game is longer than LoZ, we can find the optimal route if enough people are willing to work on it. In addition, it would help prepare for a time attack video once rerecording in SNES emulation becomes available.

I'll remember that for the next challenge. For the ones already posted, I've done them by starting and ending with 0 keys.

It can be done with 4 containers, I just wanted to make it more difficult (but it's mainly because I made a stupid mistake of saving at the title screen, losing my level 3 completion savestate, forcing me to start over). But what you're saying makes sense in terms of speed run practice, this challenge should really be with 4 heart containers.

when you end up doing the actual speedrun of the whole game, and you want it to be official, you have to play it on a real NES so you can't use savestates. There's no point in pretending.

alright, next challenge, this time much tougher: Complete Level 4 with 3 heart containers, wooden sword, and 4 bombs while getting the ladder within the dungeon I tried it and I got 2:41, which isn't too great. I lost too much time when fighting Gleeok. Looks like my level 4 skills need some polishing... Edit: heh, been trying level 4 for about two hours now. I can do the dungeon quite well with the wooden sword, but I'm still not consistent with Gleeok yet(he still manages to kill me sometimes). Video: Level 4 Challenge I had slightly faster runs, but this one is the smoothest.

Is one of you going to do a full Zelda speed run?
TSA just did another run recently (the discussion thread is here). I'm planning to do a full run soon; just a little more practice in 6, 8, and 9, as well as some experimentation using different swords (the challenges have helped a lot), and Michael mentioned he may do one as well.

2nd quest thread doesnt seem so active either
LoZ in general is quite active, despite the 2nd quest thread not getting as much attention and the 1st quest time attack being done. TSA, Michael, and I have been posting about LoZ speed run routes at ZHQ. It's good to know that the swordless first quest is also getting attention.
So I dunno, would anyone still be interested in seeing me finish 2nd quest?
I'd be interested in seeing a second quest time attack. Btw, how are you doing with your speed runs? :)

it would help to have the imput of someone who has spent time doing the run as well. If both authors agree that the run is better, then it will help support Phil's claim. Remember that Arc meant his run to be an aesthetic form, so scores aren't the only thing in question. (I edited my post a bit just seconds after you posted)

has Arc seen it? If he also believes that your run is better than his then I'm sure that will help settle it. I think what Bisqwit was saying is that the aesthetic component of this game is more important than speed (since it was classified as an aesthetic run to begin with).

I know, I was thinking about going back to an earlier save, but that's if you didn't enter with 8 bombs. The room that I usually get bombs in 6 is the one with the like-likes and wizzrobes (1 left, 4 up). But the randomness could change for you, sometimes I have to redo the whole dungeon because of it. :|

well, as a last resort you can try the overworld; blue octoroks and moblins have a very high probability of dropping bombs.

try getting bombs to appear in the earlier rooms, maybe you'll have better luck with the randomness there.

I never claimed that bisqwit's movies weren't "tagged", in fact if you read the end of my post carefully I was referring primarily to Morimoto's video as an example since it preceded the recent movies made on this site. I even went against appending anything else to the beginning of the movie such as a disclaimer. You also have to understand that not everybody who views the videos has used or is familiar with famtasia emulator, hence they may not understand the brief display of that famtasia window. You have misunderstood my point, I'm not saying the problem lies with the videos; I was just responding to Michael's chess analogy, stating the argument of certain people claim they were "cheated."

At the beginning of the video it says: "The homepage of this emulator movie: http://tasvideos.org/" I actually didn't notice the word emulator until I paused it since the screen lasts for about a second at most. But putting a long disclaimer at the beginning of the movie may be distracting. (i.e "this movie was made with savestates, and slowdowns on famtasia emulator, it is not a continuous, one-sitting run etc.) Morimoto's initial SMB3 run didn't have any explicit message saying it was made on Famtasia, which made many people assume otherwise. (though it probably wasn't intentional)

If they tell the audience viewing the chess game beforehand, then they wouldn't be called cheaters since they didn't take credit for the perfect play. The problem with time attack videos is that people aren't told in advance how they were made. Instead, some random person on some random forum\site posts: "Hey check out this video SMB3 I saw, this guy has mad skillz!." So then the people following the link on that random forum\site feel "cheated" when they hear the truth AFTER they watch the video.

I killed the Goriyas because I wanted to get more bombs for the boomerang room and aquamentus. I think if I avoided clearing Stalfos room to get the key and bombed through the keese room like you said, it would have be faster than what I chose to do in the video.

well, I tried 33 times (!) and I got 1:34 for level 3 with raft. I had to restart so many times because the red darknut wouldn't drop the bomb I needed, or I'd die in the process of completing it...even had a keese kill me once :|. Manhandla can get very annoying if the first bomb doesn't kill him completely, so I had to restart a few times because he'd kill me with his quick-moving, forcing me to redo the darknut room again! Could have done Up+A a little quicker too, but I was rushing a little. Hmm, I also have a bad reflex from ALttP of moving away from a bomb after dropping it... Video here: LoZ Level 3 Challenge Anyone else want to give it a try? Edit: I tried TSA's challenge of level 1 and I got 1:56. I think I'll work on it some more. Edit 2: I redid it again, and I got 1:50. I did get 1:45 earlier but I forgot to record. I believe the lost time comes mostly from the uncontrollable randomness. Anyway, the run is here LoZ Level 1 Challenge
