I decided to take another shot at it, here's my 5th run, 23 time units faster than fourth run, and 11 time units faster than the latest run. I have it here: Kung Fu by Deviance Version 5 Times for each floor: Level 1: 1544 Level 2: 1556 Level 3: 1544 Level 4: 1544 Level 5: 1549

I'd agree, it was a great video, creative and well played. I'm sure he could shave off a couple of seconds since the sliding wasn't perfect in all places (but then again, who cares?). I liked the use of the rush jet as well: just enough energy to make it through the game! Now who wants to do MM5? :P

what exactly do you consider old? SMB 3 was released fourteen years ago. I think that the popularity of the videos show that age doesn't determine the level of entertainment.

level 4 is the one that takes me the longest to do...pretty good how you improved level 5 though.

for sure I'll watch it but not that pretty old ones.
there is only a two year difference between MM5 and MM 3. I find megaman 5 and 6 to be very cartoonish compared to MM3 (much easier too with the jet pack and all). I believe Megaman 2 is the best of the series...but it seems like bisqwit is encoding MM4 so that'll be interesting to watch.

It has some good parts but overall, i'm disappointed with this run. At times this looks more like a speedrun than a time attack. He seems more concerned with not getting hit than saving time (ex.beginning of top man level, the bees in hard man level) and he wastes time collecting energy/weapons pickups. Super jump should not be allowed; you can go through entire levels just superjumping over enemies. Also, if the debug is permitted, then you could also use the second controller to freeze the bosses! not good.

label the latter something like General Nes Movies Discussion or make it more explicit that one is a centered discussion about individual games by stating it in the description below that forum's title.

yeah, just attempted it right now on virtuanes, I matched your time. I don't see any room for improvement, but it was still fun to play though. My video is here: smb_by_deviance.

make a section in the forum for them. It can act as a "lab" wherein we all collaborate and give insights as to exactly how the movie can improved at which specific instances. The fmv will be contained in there as well. I believe only top quality movies should be published on the main site, rejected movies will work their way up there.

I am currently making a rockman video that doesn't use the pause glitch.

Producing what is in these time attacks takes creativity. We make our movies faster by experimenting and playing difficult sections hundreds of times. Skill is the ability to duplicate what is seen in the videos in real time. Skill implies competition and credits the player more than the movie itself which is not why we are making these; hence, we are not "competing in movie-sampling", in actuality we aren't competing in anything. We work together in this forum to improve our recordings. The movies are showing what is possible is the fastest time possible. Essentially, we are showing what can be done in theory. In a way, the theory can be used to evaluate skill: the most skillful player is the one that can come closest to the theoretical time on a consistent basis. To sum up: Time attack ===> Theoretical time Speedrun ===> Practical time Skillful Play ===> Practical and consistent execution of commands which comes closest to the theoretically best. Thats my way of seeing it, I'm sure there may be disagreements. But I encourage you to start recording your plays if you believe you are skillful and submit the results. They will be classifed under the speedrun videos with others in skill competition. :)

without re-recording you can reach the same times by playing normally. But it would take A LOT longer to get there. Why bother if the end result is the same? Perfection is our goal, excellence is not tolerated.

well done, but it is not the fastest run. My fourth run beats it by 3 time units. I have it hosted here: http://poya.msn-programs.com/kungfu_by_deviance_version4.wmv Details: Level 1: 1544 Level 2: 1542 Level 3: 1543 Level 4: 1543 Level 5: 1542

kung fu has terrible detection. You can kill an enemy long before they even come close to you with the jump kick. It's only really noticeable in slow motion...not really a glitch i know, probably found in many games, but it's all i could think of :P

it is important to note that time was not the goal of that video. Similar to smb "crazy god technique" video, it was an aritistic or aesthetic type of time attack aimed at pure entertainment without speed restrictions; the same rules of a speed run don't really apply to these. It demonstrates what is possible and not only what is possible in the absolute fastest time. Though i question why all the secrets of the game were not exposed...

I think we should change the default forum picture at the top left of the forum that says "phpbb creating communities" to one that reads the title and matches the content of this forum. It would make the board less generic and set the tone a little.

These are the times from my second run. Let it be said that this run isn't perfect, I've completed them faster before and apparently so has Michael Fried. I don't remember the exact details of my third run that got damaged so i'll post the results from the 2nd run: Level 1: 1540 Level 2: 1537 Level 3: 1537 Level 4: 1533 Level 5: 1542 This game is pretty straight forward, no real glitches to exploit (except for maybe the collision detection). However, post any comments here so that we can work on optimizing the preceding times. I'll be starting the fourth run hopefully by tomorrow. EDIT: 4th run in production.

interesting, I'll attempt this game tomorrow night. Working together like this on the games helps us reach perfection faster.

I usually download 3 movies at a time overnight (when i'm asleep) so my bitTorrent is uploading for 6-8 consecutive hours until I close it in the morning. Good job with the quick reply btw ;)

bottom line is that it doesn't matter what emulator you use, the end result will be pretty much the same once you convert it to avi form. I've gotten used to Virtuanes and i'm sticking with it ;)

people go to their assumptions when they don't understand how these videos were done. They claim they aren't legit but i have yet to hear any of them tell us to stop making time attacks all together. I've seen on some forums that people read your purpose section on the site and misinterpret it as a "confession" that these videos are nothing but tricks. Their ignorance never ends...

I save my vmv's after each floor, I've only had my video get broken twice with it. Fmvs are different story, even with backups I still have problems...maybe Famtasia just doesn't like me. I wish Famtasia had an Avi converter as well, it would save me lots of time.

I only use Virtuanes and I'm on windows as well. I've toiled over similar problems with Famtasia (besides the framerate, my fmvs would get broken almost everytime). Its only my opinion but I think Virtuanes is far superior in terms of recording on windows. I would say pick the emulator that helps you make the best run and works properly for you. You could always submit your video to Arc's site (which is linked to Bisqwit's).
