Short Answer: No. Long Answer: No. It starts out at 47 (must be viewed in hex to be read right), and goes down by 1 with each metroid killed. The counter on the screen has little to do with anything.

Yeah, I actually tried that. No go. Problem is the counter doesn't decrement until after the room's exit point changes, leading to a secret world and a bad tileset.

A winner is you, CAD! In truth, the way to end the game is to finish off all 47 metroids and recharge your missiles. Any missile recharge will do, it's just that ordinarily you're limited to the ship at the end when you do so. You see, when you touch a recharge station, it first checks to see if D089, the memory location for the number of metroids left, is zero; if so, end the game, if not, fill missiles. So I just glitched back to the beginning of the game because it was so much closer! ;P The original plan was to work over to the station outside the final ruins, but tileset issues set in and wouldn't let me.

a list of questions
Good, legitimate questions. I shall answer. The second glitched item I pick up is the bombs. If you think that's bad, a 100% run would pick up what looks to be the spazer but is actually the space jump! ;P That zeta was too far off for shooting up to be practical. Besides, zetas and omegas are invulnerable to missiles moving up or down, so it wouldn't have worked anyway. No, those guys are too tough to be worth killing. What I should have done, though, was either find a way around them or freeze them before landing. Ten more hit points would have been wonderful on the gamma after the glitch warp around there. (also, these guys don't drop missiles; enemies drop only health or missiles, but never both, which is why that one enemy I farmed earlier was my only chance: everything would have just given me health) Spider floating. Jimsfriend found that alternating between spider ball and normal every frame in midair allows you to stay floating. That's just the way the game is set up. Kill the alpha, trigger the earthquake, head back and find an omega where you came from. The only way I know of to dodge Her Highness's projectiles is with the high jump boots. Aside from that, the way I took damage there was very deliberate as it caused her projectiles to exit stage right instead of up, saving eight frames per round. Believe it or not, all the metroids I kill are on the normal map. There is nothing, no enemies, items, or metroids, in the secret worlds aside from Samus and some landscape tiles. All the messed up areas you saw were parts of the regular map with a different tileset. Warping to the queen wouldn't do. It is possible, but she won't be active until all the other 46 metroids are destroyed and you enter her room the way you normally do. Not like glitching to the fight would matter: In order to finish the game, memory address D089, the variable that counts how many metroids are left, must read 0, so I'd have to take care of the other 46 anyway.

May I answer the brownie question? Usually when you enter the ship, the activation device is in the center, but you proceed to walk right in order to activate it. :)
Not quite, but you are on the right track. Here's a hint: the activation device inside the ship at the end of the game is actually just a regular missile recharge station. If you can tell me why it was on the right instead of in the middle, you'll have completed the challenge! :P Glad you all have enjoyed it so far! Thank you!

Wow. You've got some things in there I never would have thought of, like extending the ground above the first pit. Good job! Definitely will be incorporated into the next version. If it ever gets done...

To kinda go back to a former conversation, Capcom has apparently decided to include a mode that will simulate the Nintendo's sprite flicker and lagging. Read [a lot] more at Gamasutra. Man. First the look, then the boxart, now this. When they said they were going retro, they meant it, and I, for one, couldn't be any happier about it. :P

Wow, that was a blast to watch. I don't know what the heck happened, but with all those glitches and secret worlds flashing across the screen, I really didn't care. It's great to see that the select trick was finally done justice! Also, this was several years in the making, wasn't it? I remember a very long time ago when you first mentioned that you figured out how the select trick screwed with the buffer. I guess the last metroid is not in captivity.
In a way, you are correct. Work had begun in the winter of '05, but it was mainly research. I probably would have continued, but I had that two-year mission coming up, so postponement was necessary. The actual run wasn't started until earlier this summer. And yes, it is nice to see the glitch done justice. That's pretty much to only reason I made it. ;P

I suspected something along those lines. If you watch carefully, Apollo's walking animation changes slightly in level 2; plus there's that bizarre graphical glitch that's available only in level 1, but other levels include an enemy clipping glitch, and level 1 is the only one with falling deaths! I wonder why the inconsistency.

One last WIP before I prep it for publication. This one eliminates all the metroids in Ruins 3 and the surrounding areas. All I need now is to take out a few stragglers, take down the omegas, and head to the end. I must say, this section was a pain to do. Lots of awkward bouncing on the metroids while trying to do the select glitch, not to mention the vertical caverns have the wrong tileset. Those stupid brambles... I'm surprised that one alpha didn't give me as much trouble as I thought he would, given that I had to fight him in a random collection of sand tiles, bricks and spikes. But, hey, it all turned out pretty swell. I mean, I not only nail 10 metroids in the additional 3:10, but I also collect two missile packs and an energy tank, so I'm not going to complain too much! Unfortunately, I'm going to have to deal with a glitch-free section that I think will last about a minute immediately following what I have here. I tried everything, but it just wasn't fitting into the route like it should. Oh well.

Why? As far as we know, this game isn't TASable, which is what I understand the "Other games" forum is for.

Emphatic yes vote. I seem to enjoy movies when I have no clue what's going on, so Kraid's lair made me confusedly happy. Plus, some of the other minor improvements were actually very surprising and exciting to watch, especially the morph ball entrance to the wall climbing glitches. And what the heck? You enter the left door and the screen scrolls to the right? O_o There goes another movie where I thought the longer ones were more entertaining (before I enjoyed the 1 item run better than the any%). Oh, and thank you for not using the suitless code. I never really liked it. If only every improvement were more like this. Surprising and entertaining with lots of interesting new tricks, not just an improvement of precision on the same old same old.

I'm not entirely certain where this picture comes from, but I understand it's from a Capcom employee's t-shirt worn at E3. Behold the awesomeness! Capcom is really getting retro with this. It seems to have been inspired by Megaman 2's European boxart.

I fully support this idea because gocha read my mind. I had a similar idea a while ago, but for whatever reason never voiced it.

So, wait, they accidentally inserted stuff about XBLA and PSN at the end of that there trailer? Okay... inb4IGNmakesstuffup </gamefaqs> Also, I don't know about anyone else, but I find the music in that trailer to be quite hard on the ears.

IGN has some more news up. Notable things: 1. Also coming to XBLA and PSN. 2. Online leaderboards for speedrunners. 3. Megaman will have his Virtual Console debut with 1&2 to prelude this game's release. Also curious is how the video has what seems to be the bubble jumping puzzle from Wave Man's level in Megaman 5.

It's the currency the Wii Shop channel uses. In the USA at least, 1 point = 1 penny.

Part of what this game suffered from is over-hyping. Before release, fans hyped this sucker way up, more than I had ever seen, expecting it to be the end-all, be-all game. Then the anticipated release came out! And it turned out to be little more than an expansion of the Smash formula which has been around for a decade now. Obviously this didn't meet the expectations that various fans had put in place. For about a month, you could hear people whining, "This game sucks because Ridley isn't a playable character! A pox on you, Sakurai! How could you let us down like that?" Seriously. It got hyped up so much that wishlists somehow became features it was going to have, not what it should have. Of course, some disappointments are legitimate. Tripping is stupid, it items aren't as fun (I'm looking at you, Pokéball), many of the new stages are over-the-top, the online is an absolute mess, and the franchise itself is becoming more and more like The Nintendo History Channel than an opportunity to just rumble with some friends as Nintendo characters. But, at the end of the day, it's still a Smash game, nothing more, nothing less. As long as I can have a fun time with some friends, it's cool. Just don't act like a pompous jerk when we're playing, okay? :(

This screenshot comes uncomfortably close to reminding me of the Action 52. I can't pinpoint what game, though.

You know what would be double plus awesome? If they actually released this for the NES. The first officially released title in nearly 15 years! I might buy that. Also, someone is REALLY excited for this.

I actually tried making a Dark Demon only run. The password was kinda fun to do. A couple of hours and around 200 reloads if I recall. I would have continued it if the file hadn't gotten lost in a file transfer.
