I can see a problem with any % as fastest completion regardless of difficulty because it opens the door, a year or so down the line, for people to argue that an easy run should sit alongside a hard run of the same game because they use different paths or somesuch. I continue to like the hardest difficulty guideline, for many of the reasons stated above (it looks more impressive, it's more difficult, ...) but I also approve of peoples' decisions to go with easier difficulty levels when it doesn't matter to the overall challenge (things have more health, player does less damage, etc).

The answer was given repeatedly in this thread, but I will quote it for posterity, since you refuse to look elsewhere:
feos wrote:
feos: The research before making this run seems to be done very poorly. Since 2007 there exists a WIP that is 532 frame faster in Level 1 + Boss. And that WIP was not even optimized to maximum. Since 2009 there exists a real-time run that uses quite some tricks that prove this TAS's sub-optimality. The main thing is skipping the Level 4 Boss (saves ~13 seconds) by scrolling the camera up, which does not let him spawn. Also, standing right before the mini-boss of that level, one can kill him a second faster than in this TAS. This does not come from the difficulty difference, since that only adds 1-2 HP to bosses. The game speed isn't different in a European version, used by that RTS. I also can't agree with the difficulty chosen here, because it does not affect the gameplay, it only increases the player's damage. That means you can do much more damage boosts in an Easy run, not losing actual gameplay. Rejecting the run, and hoping more effort is put in a TAS of such a complicated game, ideally several people would work on it, due to heavy luck manipulation required.
The bolded part is relevant to the discussion (that shouldn't be happening because multiple judges have weighed in on the subject).

What would be nice is if you started a forum discussion somewhere other than this thread about how stringently the 'game difficulty' suggestion should be followed. I was looking for it earlier in the articles section itself about where game difficulty should only be 'hardest' if it offers some noticeable challenge, and otherwise 'easy' for speed is valid, but I got bored and went back to playing Clicker Heroes.

There was an NES game I played once which was a ridiculously long maze, you started with 75 lives, and the game came with a full map and the exact path you had to take to win, but, of course, I can't remember its name.

If you don't find the movie entertaining, but you also don't find it unentertaining (that is, you find it of average quality for what it claims to do), you can always vote 'Meh'. As far as I understand it, audience commentary in the thread informs a judge's decision as much as (more than?) the vote tallies, and should help decide whether the movie is published or not. You are more than able to vote 'Yes' that you find a movie entertaining, and still argue in the thread independent of your vote for it to not be published because of reasons.

Perhaps if you read the rest of the thread, you would have some idea of what is going on. As for the comment on optimization, the fact that the moves are generally hitting their last hit on the new training task appearing suggests that optimization is a key factor in this work. If you want to prove that you can do better, open your emulator, acquire the ROM, and show everyone up.

It might be worth seeing how many balloons are on-screen when the 20th balloon spawns, because collecting exactly those ones (as interestingly as possible) should end the bonus stages as quickly as possible. Waiting for the 20 balloons to fly off the screen would be a lot slower (and I think there's a 'NO BONUS' flash when you collect no balloons -- checking that now -- which would be slower still than collecting at least one balloon, as is done in the encode).

Dragon's Lair is exactly the same series of inputs, regardless of when you start, because that is how the game is designed. Duck Hunt has some randomness to it as to where (and when?) the ducks appear. I really don't see what you have against Zaxxon, except that you /really/ hate it for some reason.

So, we should unpublish Gradius and every other auto-scrolling shooter?

Actually, that crosshairs only appears in the case of enemy planes; it doesn't appear for ground enemies.

I had hours of fun with Zaxxon on the ColecoVision in my early years, though I don't think I ever managed to beat the boss. Judging by the run, I came awfully close. All of that said, lots of projectiles should have hit you but didn't, and you trivialized an early 80s arcade game. I have to vote yes.

If we're keeping all of the company logo screens (because they're part of the game's boot sequence) in other consoles, we should keep the PSX BIOS screen in PSX encodes for the same reason.

And I never suggested that you said you would. Simply that, if you are saddened that the site could be better, your five years of experience, written down so that others could make use of it would help things. Your lack of desire to help, however, is something that cannot be helped.

To be fair, that's a problem you can work toward solving by writing the information out yourself and convincing an editor (or becoming an editor) to make pages for you.

Nice job in Ceres! That was wonderful to watch, and as noted above, noticeably different than previous runs.

Not all of the runs were judged, due to time constraints. Raiscan says that a proper leaderboard will be up within "the next few days".

A new WIP. Started over because it was becoming increasingly obvious that I needed more Golds from earlier in the game, upgraded from BizHawk 1.9.1 to 1.11.0 and switched cores from QuickNES to NesHawk. Link to video

From what I remember of the run, a lot of time is spent regenerating health, particularly in the mandatory fire dungeon, so there is some time-saving potential there as well. I'll reach out to OmnipotentEntity when I'm nearer the end of my current project. Good luck finding your motivation again.

Kurabupengin, how does a TAS of this game differ from a normal person familiar with the game (or someone reading a walkthrough)?

And, not to add to the pile of negative comments, but 13:51 - 4:00 = 9:51 > 9:39, which means that you still have improvements to make after learning the Yammar Wobble. :| Keep trying, don't be discouraged.

Actually, yes, I am interested in Lagoon. I have to finish Faxanadu first, but I do have some familiarity with the game, and after dying to the final final final final final boss so many times because of how it starts the fight, I'd love to trivialize it. I will need to rewatch the original run, and ultimately see what I think I can do, but I would like to work on this (alone or with someone else).
