Well, this is good news...turns out you don't need any heart containers to get either of the upgraded weapons. The game automatically gives you a certain number of hearts after each chapter. And FYI b, my internet went down for most of yesterday and this morning. I'll leave AIM on today and should be hanging around a fair amount. Just to let you know, your video of 4:08 through the first 3 acts was about 25-26 seconds faster than Lezard's up to that point. -Josh

I dunno what's up with that, FCEU works fine for me at any speed with sound on. Only major complaint I have is that it tends to desync if you change speed during the movie. And I won't spoil myself until the full run is done. Judging from your other one, it'll be more than worth the wait. =)

Thanks again for the effort, but... The issue is that none of these maps give a detailed picture of where each heart container is. It's all tunnels or vague overworld stuff. Don't worry, I'll just do this one the ol' fashioned way... -Josh

That didn't help out a whole lot, actually. Thanks for the effort, though...I'll just figure this out myself. -Josh

b, I could send it to you if you have AIM or something. Note that I only have the AVI's, though, and Palatinum's were way bigger than the ones on this site. On topic, is there anywhere on the web I can find complete overworld maps of this game, or savestates for each chapter? I don't feel like playing through most of the game to figure out the heart containers, though I will if it comes down to that. -Josh

Thanks Bisqwit. =) Right now I'm trying to figure out what to do regarding heart containers. I need to collect one of the first two in order to use the Shooting Star, and three total in order to get the Super Nova. There's one in Chapter 6 which appears to be almost directly on the required path, but the rest require you to go out of your way in one way or another. Will do testing here before continuing the run... -Josh

Thanks, and I wish you good luck with your movies. Secret of Mana MUST be done! =) And yeah, speedruns.org appears to be down. Luckily I still have their videos somewhere... -Josh

Well, since Zer0 said he isn't feeling motivated, I'll take it upon myself to do this childhood favorite of mine. I'm right at the start of the first dungeon, and already 128 frames faster than him due to optimizing the start menu and dialogue. He did use the best order of talking to the villagers, actually, but didn't execute it as fast as possible. EDIT: Chapter 1 is done with a time of 17116 frames (4:45). Up to the point where Zer0 stopped, I was 387 total frames faster than him, so I saved 259 in the dungeon. This was accomplished almost entirely through the usage of the torch weapon. It is twice as powerful as the yoyo and only takes very slightly longer to execute, so it helps a lot vs. rats, snakes, and the boss. Oh yeah, and special weapons don't carry over from one dungeon to another. I might have considered saving all the torches for the 2nd boss if that were the case, but nope, you lose them after the first dungeon. It's up on my Filespace, so check it out and tell what you think. =) -Josh

I generally follow Truncated's rule of timeattacking: Always make AT LEAST two versions of a run before submitting. The only one of my exceptions to this is Monster Party (mainly because I had another movie to study beforehand), and even that's stretching it because I had to restart in the middle of it twice. What AxeMan said is very true, you tend to find things to improve as you progress through your first run (and often after that). I would agree with Phil's recommendation and suggest you give this another shot. 2-player would be the best, and I'm still thinking that Haggar/Dean would be the best team. Look at the Streets of Rage timeattacks here, in both of them the character who deals the most damage turns out to be the best. -Josh

Damn, and I really thought for a second that a game would finally have a woman who actually LOOKS like she could fight as a heroine... Ah well. -Josh

...Wow. I thought your last movie was about as good as it was going to get aside from the damage thing, but it's nice to see this being so wrong. Excellent work, man, looking forward to seeing it when it's done! -Josh

Isn't Samus something like 6'4 and almost 200 pounds? No way they'd cast anyone even close to that. Yes, indeed, this movie would suck. And not in a good way... -Josh

I'm in agreeance with Phil here about beat-em-ups. Generally it's best to go with a multi-player timeattack for them, unless it's something known to be insanely hard on single-player like Streets of Rage 2's Mania difficulty (which is still one of my favorite movies on this site). This movie shouldn't be published, but an optimized, 2-player Final Fight 3 should. Oh yeah, and I'm almost positive Guy is not the right character choice. Haggar probably would be the best, then Dean if it's a 2-player, but I'm not too sure of that. -Josh

This AVI played just fine for me, as did Turtles. Back when Kirby Super Star was published, I followed the instructions in the codec help page here, and everything's worked since. And Truncated, there are quite a few other places where taking damage would help. If anyone here still has Bisqwit's Batman movie, you can look at that for some examples. -Josh

I smell a flamewar brewing here... Oh, and I thought the movie was cool. But then, I actually played this in arcades way back when. The name "Slash Skate Screamers" still kills me every time. =P -Josh

Good point. It's just that it's highly doubtful we'll see MAME rerecording for a very long time, if ever, and I don't know what other emulators support the arcade version. -Josh

Yep, same to me. Wouldn't be a bad timeattack, as wouldn't Code Name: Viper which is highly similar. -Josh

Ah, forgot about that. I think that's the only time he does it, though. And if you were going for pure speed this would not make sense, as taking damage helps in other spots as well. So it still is more of an aesthetic run... -Josh

Hehe, you're welcome, guys. I just knew there HAD to be a reset button somewhere, and just pressed random keys until I found it. And Bayou Billy and Gradius 2 as the next projects are A-OK by me. =) -Josh

1. I see no reason to bother with the SNES version. Inferior graphics and sound, no Cody or Guy (depending on version), the level with Rolento was cut out, etc. FinalBurn Alpha has rerecording, so one could use that to make a perfectly kickass 2-player timeattack of the real thing. 2. Haggar's probably the best character for a timeattack due to his huge damage. With the ability to randomize enemy behavior, you shouldn't need the infinite combo. -Josh

He said he specifically wanted to do a no-damage run because in this game it looks impressive (similar to the published Batman movie on this site) and doesn't cost you more than 5 seconds at the most. I, for one, agree with him, though I would like to see an as-fast-as-possible run as well. -Josh

Hmm. You can reset with F3. The closest you could come is hitting that then immediately pausing the game, then starting your movie. Still, it really should automatically reset. *shrug* -Josh

And here are the games I'd most like to see: Alien vs. Predator DoDonpachi Both D&D games ESPRade (never seen or played it, but it's from the makers of DoDonpachi so it must be good =) ) Final Fight Ghouls & Ghosts Magic Sword Magical Drop 3 (there are a few different modes, which would all look insane) Magician Lord Mars Matrix Both Megaman games Metal Slug series Money Puzzle Exchanger Shock Troopers Solomon's Key (mainly to see how different it is from the NES version) Strider Twinkle Star Sprites (freaking crazy, no other game out there is anything like this) -Josh
