Completed level 2, so I'm back to where I was before. This time the total time is around 4:30, so I'm about 4-5 seconds faster than my previous run and about 37-38 seconds faster than Evilheart at this point. Over 1/4 of the way through this game, already... EDIT: The current FCM is available for download at the link in my sig. -Josh

Aren't Chemists supposed to be awfully broken in general? I know they can level any enemy up to 255 by abusing a certain item, allowing you to Level 5 Death your way through the game. They can also Berserk any enemy, as I recall. This all may take way too much leveling and item gathering to be worth it, though... And FF5 is my least favorite of the 16-bit FF's. 4 and 6 had far more memorable soundtracks and characters IMO, though 5 probably dusts them both gameplay-wise. Would still like to see a run of every SNES FF, Josh.

I watched your latest...gorgeous stuff, particularly with your flying in Donut Plains 1 and how you flew through the bar at the end. Please, keep this up. Your style is awesome and at this rate this movie will be one of my favorites when it's done. Hang in there, man! =) -Josh

Done with a time of 9:54 and e-mailed to ziplock. Last level's pretty boring, though at least they used the best music for the last two stages. -Josh

Time of 7:58 at the start of the last level. Level 4 was fun, surprisingly. Your guy jumps really high here, so you get to use your speed a lot finally. If the whole game were like this it actually might be entertaining... -Josh

5:45 at the start of level 4. Jeebus this game is stupid...I thought the speed would make it interesting, but you hardly ever get to use it! No way I'm submitting my movie to this site, it's too boring. However, I will finish it and give it to Nintendorecords. Already only two more levels to go, this may be under 10 minutes... -Josh

At the start of level 3, the time is 4:09. Those stages where you're hanging from a rope are pretty damned long and boring, but the cool thing about them is that you can grab health potions without any fear of time penalty. The boss fights are very, very lame. Just wanted to mention that. Oh yeah, and some of the sound effects from this game would later be recycled in the NES Addams Family game. -Josh

Just completed first photography stage. As I'm about to start level 2, the time is 1:39. -Josh

Going good so far, redid the first level and shaved off 2 seconds. Figured out that if you touch the red capsules at a certain point, in a certain way, they won't kill you. Also, it's important to avoid the blue health potions whenever you can; they're tallied up at the end of each stage. Grabbing one doesn't hurt anything, but each one after that takes about 15-16 frames to count. Here's my plan for the photography stages: Use up my film as quickly as possible, while still getting snapshots of the bad guy when I can. This is the quickest way to end the stage, and it still looks at least somewhat skillful. From my experience it doesn't seem to make a difference whether your mask is rated "Poor" or higher, so that's not an issue. EDIT: Yes, I'm concentrating on this now. Monster Party will take a lot longer to do than this, so that one will come later. -Josh

Drat, looks like I'll have to redo this yet again. Barring the discovery of any glitches or anything, this SHOULD be the last time. I just figured out that getting hit while facing backward gives you a nice little forward boost. This can be put to very good use in a couple places in level 1... -Josh

Yep, FCEU got completely messed up as far as time goes now. Ah well... Evilheart said this could be improved by 10-30 seconds. Turns out I surpassed his prediction with a 33-second improvement...in the first two levels. As best I can tell it hardly ever seems worth it to get Bert, as the transformation sequences themselves waste a good 3 seconds each. EDIT: Actually I'll be redoing this now. I just discovered a couple techniques which could be minor timesavers, so I figured I'll do it now while I'm still early into this. -Josh

This is one of those games that really should focus on game time units IMHO. Sonic is in the same boat, as all these games "reward" skill with time-wasting bonuses...I say go for game time anyway. -Josh

Hmm, just started playing this not too long ago. I remember reading about it in Nintendo Power way back in the day and thinking it sounded really neat. From my experience, the ideas are indeed neat but the game is just too damned hard to control. What makes this interesting for a timeattack, though, is the Maximum Retard Velocity which Darkman reaches in about a second or two. This, combined with his tendency to fall off platforms sooner than you'd think, is what makes the game frustrating in real time. In a timeattack, though, this speed can make for quality entertainment. I made a quickie test run, completing level 1 in 1:10 (4190 frames). There's likely still room for improvement, as I was just figuring out some of the game's advanced properties. Enemies are EXTREMELY difficult to avoid completely, as you need to jump over them and still have a lot of room to spare before you land. And there are these red capsules which contain health potions but also kill you if you touch them before they release said potions...I have to do a lot of waiting for these things in my current movie. Oh yeah, and when you walk on ropes you have to alternate pressing A and B to balance yourself. You move at Regular Velocity while on the ropes, but in at least one case they're better to use than the floor below them. -Josh

Looking back through this, I think Booda said he wasn't sure of the circumstances of Frank's disappearance. For the unitiated out there, I'll answer this: In the final episode of Season 6 (Samson vs. The Vampire Women), during the first "intermission" host segment, Frank is approached by Torgo as the Mads have been many times before. This time, though, he's an angel named Torgo the White, and he offers Frank to join him in Second Banana Heaven. Frank happily accepts, and Dr. F is saddened by this series of events; after the movie, in fact, he dedicates an entire musical number to his former whipping boy. Definitely a great send-off for a great character, and an episode highly recommended by me. Now, here's a trivia question I want to see you all try and answer without mst3kinfo.com: What is the only MST'ed movie to win an Academy Award? Bonus points if you can tell me the original name of this film. -Josh

Just wondering...why the "NO" vote? Was it because of desync, or something with the actual movie? Feedback would be greatly appreciated. -Josh

It looks like the screen scrolls faster when you jump. Are you sure it wouldn't be faster if you jumped all the time?
Ah, I was wondering when someone would ask about this... I have checked, and jumping is the exact same speed as walking IF you remain on level ground the whole time. The reason is that you move extremely slowly during the descent of your jump. Thus, if you jump to a higher spot, jumping is faster because the descent isn't as long. And jumping to a lower place is slower than walking and dropping down to it. I believe I have made the best possible use of these properties in the movie. -Josh

Alright, I'm working on this. Level 1 completed in 6095 frames, which is somewhere around 4.5-5 seconds faster than Evilheart. So far FCEU is giving the right time...I think it gets messed up when you replay the movie, make a state, and load it while replaying. -Josh

Are you sure you're using the right rom, and not an [o1] or something? My sound settings were Quality - Low and Rate - 44100, that might affect it too. -Josh

Hehe, interesting observation. This game does seem to borrow a lot of things from other great games of that era: - The concept of a whip was clearly inspired by Castlevania, though this one is obviously rather different. - The coins serve the exact same purpose as in Super Mario Bros. - The (very good) storyline and cinemas between levels are highly Ninja Gaiden-esque. -Josh

ziplock: What I meant was, is it possible to abuse luck to get all 13 shells from your first "YOU'VE HIT SOMETHING!", and thus not have to bother with the second encounter and bonus stage? That would be a huge timesaver if it were possible... -Josh

Level 10 completed, with a 1-second improvement just like the first stage. This means I'll have to improve the last level by 4 seconds to get under 13:00...I'll go ahead and give it a try right now. -Josh
