I think it was just that there weren't many Genesis owners for these early games, and then they were forgotten as time went on. I am particularly thinking of Strider - huge deal at the time, the magazines were giving this one all sorts of awards for being an actual decent arcade port, and it didn't break a million. Didn't know that re: Castlevania. =)

Man, you should try Home Improvement sometime then. =P Also, they still do today. See: American Chopper, Dirty Dancing. Actually played this one as a kid, can't wait for the AVI! -Josh

I don't think that Wikipedia list is complete. In the PSX list, they don't have SOTN - that was a Greatest Hits game and all, so I would have to presume it broke the million mark, right? Not that I think Altered Beast did so, just pointing out. Also, AB was a launch title, so that's why it got hype at the time. Saying it's great/innovative is grossly exaggerating, though; we already had a great deal of beat-em-ups back in those days even.

So, could we possibly have a separate DOSBox forum? There are far too many possibilities for this one thread. Thanks, Josh.

One Must Fall = ZOMG YES YES YES I'm not sure exactly how it would all work out, though. It would have to be Tournament Mode, and you should use the hidden options to turn on juggle combos and increase speed. The early parts would be boring since you're gimped, but with some leveling you can pull off insane crap. Also, with enough money, you could switch between all the different bots, thereby pulling off something akin to the Mortal Kombat II run. Also, I support Wolfenstein tenfold! Only a couple people have ever done any legit speedrunning, and the demo program is unreliable and just generally poor. You could have two categories: Pure speed, and 100% w/ secret levels. They would be vastly different from each other in gameplay, so it would not be redundant at all - I think the 100% would actually be a lot more exciting to watch, as the running & shooting is quite a bit faster than in Doom. Plus I want to see someone get 100% kills on E4M10 - I swear that shit's impossible IRL. =P The only issue here is that there's at least one level where you cannot reach 100%'s: E2M8 (a.k.a. The Aardwolf Level). I think there's also another level (ep6 somewhere?) with a glitched secret door. And since we're on the topic of Wolfenstein, nobody mentioned Spear of Destiny yet. This would be the same deal, and again there's at least one stage you can't 100% (the second hidden level). I guess the best way to work these out would be just to aim for the highest possible %'s. Takes a lot of testing, though... Thank you so much, Bisqwit! This opens up SO many classics. -Josh

Bisqwit, you had expressed surprise that so many had not played this game. I think I can partially explain this. Here in the US, PC gaming was more of a niche market back then. It wasn't until shortly after Star Control 2 that it really exploded in popularity, thanks to graphics-intensive titles like 7th Guest and Myst, and (most importantly) Doom. Since the audience here at Tasvideos is largely American, you can understand where this would be an issue.

Hello all, According to speedruns.net, we now have a re-recording C64 emulator! You can find the download link and a tutorial on the main page. However, I don't see anything in the tutorial about a frame-advance feature. If you try this, please let us know if it's there or not. So, what TAS-worthy material is there, anyway? Great Giana Sisters, Turrican, and Last Ninja spring to mind - I know very little about this platform, though, so there has to be far more! Time for a new subforum, perhaps? -Josh

I think you don't realize just how bad it gets at the highest level. In a 2/3 setting, you get Evo final 8 with 127 Genei-Jins. Even Ohnuki is at a disadvantage against inferior players using Yun. Japan single-elim tournaments make it look better, as low tier can sometimes make it far by stringing together a few lucky parries. But that's not good design, just chance. Capcom got lazy and created characters that HAVE to parry to win (i.e. Hugo, Q), then with Remy it's literally like they forgot parry existed. My problem is, controlling space is not as much of a factor with parrying. The game is mostly fought up-close, like 3Ds. It *is* one of the most fun games at intermediate level, however, which I think is why it remains so popular. The cast really is quite diverse and deep, it's just that almost none of that matters at the top.

OK people, time to drop the knowledge! VF doesn't have enough variety for my tastes - that's my main problem with just about any 3D fighter. Marth is hardly "overrated". The number of good moves isn't the most important factor at high level - just look at Tekken. Zurreco, you DO know Ky is easily the best character in Slash, right, and Chipp is actually decent? XX and #r were eventually broken by the Japanese, mostly with Slayer/Eddie in XX and just Eddie in #r. People associate XX with Sol dust loop, but he wasn't on their level - Americans just liked him because he was easy mode. Slash, on the other hand, has remained excellent throughout its lifespan. However, in the new one (Accent Core), Chipp is back to suckitude. Ky isn't as good but more interesting/fun, it looks like. Most of the weaker characters throughout the series can actually compete now, though - May, Venom, Zappa. Best fighting games IMO, in terms of variety & depth at high level, are: 1. Guilty Gear Slash (& possibly AC) 2. SF2 Hyper Fighting (Turbo, for the console warriors) 3. Super SF2 Turbo I'm not a huge fan of the supers in ST - the good ones drastically restrict your gameplan and allow for lucky wins. Old Sagat is real lame too, but the rest is all good. HF has lots of interesting stuff lost in future versions, such as Zangief's K lariat (invincible to sweeps), Balrog's invincible turn-around punch, and Chun's almost shoto-level fireball. I often find the HF characters more fun than the ST ones. Oh, and as an aside, I think Tekken and 3rd Strike are the most overrated tourney games. I'll explain why if anyone cares. And on topic, I always thought Evo was nuts NOT to include Smash before, but realized that the Major League Gaming schedule made it virtually impossible. That's the whole reason they have it now - MLG just dropped Smash this year. Also note, Evo staff members have outright said in the past that they always make it a point to include the hottest new 3D fighters. That's why you had DOA last year, and two PS3 games this year when few players own one. All in all, though, this is their strongest game lineup yet. Last year was marred by DOA, Mario Kart DS, Tekken 5.0, and SF2 Anniversary Edition - respectively replacing them are VF5, Smash, Dark Resurrection (best or 2nd best in the series), and ST. That's what we call "trading up." =)

Do you not want anything competitive? Most of the good beat-em-ups are on MAME - Dungeons & Dragons, Alien vs. Predator, Sengoku 3 (SO underrated). The main exception is the Streets of Rage series. The Peace Keepers is also kinda interesting due to the character variety and huge number of different routes. Also on MAME, you have the Metal Slug series, a worthy successor to Contra. I can list more if you'd like! =)

Awesome news Dasrik! My original submission may or may not be in Gruefood. I cancelled it, FWIW. It's not bad at all, but it didn't use frame advance so the bosses and flying are rather suboptimal. Some tips: 1. Alternately mashing A and B makes you stay in the air longer and thus deliver more hits with the baseball bat. However, this makes you move more slowly; flying is kinda tricky because of this, as you need to tap A just the right number of times. And in general, you want to press buttons as little as possible while moving forward. 2. Reflected projectiles deal more damage per hit than the bat, so try to combine the two when possible. 3. Walking into an enemy, turning backward at the last frame, and getting hit gives you a minor speed boost. From what I can remember, you should use this whenever possible EXCEPT IN LEVEL 3. Reason being, in level 4 there are maybe 2 or 3 spots where you will lose several seconds if you can't take a hit. After that, you will have enough life for every possible damage boost. 4. Bert is not worth using in the earlier levels, as his LAZURS are slower and no more powerful than the bat. The lone exception is level 4, where he can take a shortcut to the end boss. Even in level 5 with the javelin guy, you are better off sticking with Mark and manipulating the javelins. 5. In the last two levels, on the other hand, Bert is an absolute must. Not just because level 7 is all vertical scrolling, but also because he gets the almighty DOUBLE LAZURS. These deal many times more damage than the bat and make the rest of the game a joke. 6. In level 7, you only need to beat two bosses for the key. I just did the first two, but the giant spider may be better than the Reaper since you need to fly to reach the Reaper's weak spot. Definitely worth looking into. And that's about all I can think of! Good luck...you'll need it! ;) Best wishes for your health, Josh.

Just novelty, really; it was the first sidescrolling beat-em-up to gather much notice. Plus, there's a bunch of games in the series along with the cartoon and movie. Most of this wasn't very good, of course, but it made the franchise a part of our dumb nostalgia.

I made a preliminary TAS of this game myself, a long time ago. Definitely try to avoid fighting! And you never need a good mask. As such, in the bonus stages, keep taking pictures as fast as you can, and also try to get hit as often as possible. These things make the timer count down faster. Good luck, Josh.

Hello all, I know that shmups don't usually make good videos, but this may be an exception. To explain, this 1992 game was created specifically for a major Japanese high-score competition; as such, very few people have ever heard of it. But here's why I think it would make a great TAS: 1. It is an extremely fast-paced game. The background scrolling, the bullets, everything is high-speed. 2. Constant action. As this game was meant to challenge even the best players, the screen is usually full of enemies and bullets. 3. Somehow, they managed to pull all this off with NO LAG WHATSOEVER. This further enhances points 1 and 2. 4. Awesome, awesome music. One of my favorite NES soundtracks, really. 5. The game is not particularly long, again because it was made for competitive play. There are only 4 levels, and the last one is just a bunch of boss fights. So if anyone out there is looking for a project to take on, this one may be worth your while! Thanks, Josh.

Hello Hisatoki, I was looking through your Youtube videos and stumbled upon this. Excellent job! =) However, there are some small improvements I can spot. Here they are: 1. If there is a platform/corridor right above you, jump as you reach the end of it and you will receive a minor speed boost. This can be used in levels 2 and 3, and I think you missed it in 3. 2. At the very end of level 3, you fell down the ledge instead of jumping. Jumping should be possible IIRC. 3. The biggest one: The flame your car shoots while shifting gears can damage enemies! This saves a chunk of time against the level 10 boss, as you can hit him even while he's at the bottom of the screen. If you can create an updated version with these corrections, it would make a great replacement for my crappy run of this game on here! Thanks, Josh.

I really want to see this, as I loved the previous versions, but I'm having issues with the AVI. It won't work in my standard Media Player Classic, and when I try mplayer there's no sound and it starts a long ways into the run. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Josh.

Automatic yes, excellent work. And I would love to see you try CV3, as that was one of my favorite NES games way back when. You could obsolete a couple Famtasia movies in the process, even.
