I voted no on the Metal Slug X TAS, because I cannot accept continues being used in an arcade game, especially not a shmup or run'n'gun, because the entire arcade community agrees that if you didn't one credit clear, you didn't beat the game (alright, two players, so two credits, but you know what I mean). Finite reseources versus infinite resources, yeah. By and large, I agree with moozooh. But it's also a case-by-case thing. Now, take the Ufouria TAS. The reason I pick that is a) because I console speedrun it myself and b) because it was the only one that came to mind. It uses deathwarping. You have no lives - dying and then hitting Continue means you're put at the location where you begin the game, but you have all the items you had when you died. Lives were turned into an infinite resource, used a lot, and you could easily make a case for that being Game Over. That was a TAS I had been anxiously awaiting, and when it was submitted, I was the first person to happily vote yes. Hypocritical? Maybe. But to me, continues in arcade games and console games are slightly different. Arcade games, especially run'n'guns and shmups, are by design short(-ish) games, made to hate and kill you, so that you spend a lot of quarters to get to the end, and this is also why most games (again, I'm largely from a shmup and run'n'gun mindset here) respawns you at the same point when you continue. And in an arcade, you actively compete with other players by way of the high score table, and as was previously mentioned, a lot of arcade games add a 1 at the end of your score when you use a continue (and oftentimes clears the rest of the score), as a mark of shame, and points out the score as not having been attained "fairly", in lack of a better word. Console games don't work like that. There's no money. Most games put you back at the start of the current stage, or even the current "world" when you continue, and some do it when you die. They're made with a different mindset entirely. Game Overs usually cost a lot of time, you go to a game over screen, you have to start over from some point... And I think that it's here, somewhere, that I can accept continuing in console games in a different way. In arcade games, using continues serve as nothing but to make lives an infinite resource, to gain a little time on the very screen it's used. And to get powerups from nowhere. In console games, using a Game Over to save time is only done when there's a VERY GOOD REASON to do so, such as aforementioned death warping or glitching.

An arcade game has simply not been beaten in any kind of acceptable way if continues were used. To me, this run ended at the trains. If this had been deathless, even with using the pistol on the trains, I would have voted yes. Even if you had died a few times to bypass some of the trains, but not used any continue, I would most likely also have voted yes. Death abuse is OK, because your lives are a finite resource. Continues make lives an infinite resource, making them meaningless and makes the run less exciting. But it's a case-by-case thing, too. I'll take any further arguing to the other topic.

The deaths I could possibly accept, even if I do think a Metal Slug TAS should be entirely deathless. But using continues in an arcade game is, to me, completely unacceptable and I can't consider it properly beating the game.

Good run otherwise, but using continues just ruins it entirely for me. Voting no.

I enjoyed watching this, because while I don't much like the game, seeing it being played like this is pretty fun. However, I completely agree with that 16 stars is an obsolete category and thus completely arbitrary. Voting no, and waiting for a 120-star-TAS.

That really seems like a video where you want the enemy chaser to be visible at all times to make it an interesting watch.

I'm going to largely stay out of this debate, and due to being a very passive member of this community, I can't say I've ever had anything against Nach. But banning me because I uploaded and linked to a prepatched ROM of a Rockman 5 hack after having linked to the patch a minute earlier, and banning AngerFist because he asked for it? Come on, now. If I had uploaded it and linked AngerFist to it in private, would he still have gotten banned for asking me about it? Would I have gotten banned if I had said in the channel that I had linked it to him in a private query? What I'm really seeing here is a problem with the IRC channel rules. While I fully understand the "don't link to ROMs, don't ask for ROMs" policy on the forum, there is no reason for this to extend to IRC. No other community I've ever been to that has both a forum and an IRC channel has these kinds of rules apply to both places. For instance, in a community I'm in that's dedicated to a non-freeware gaming series, on the forum, there's information on how you can buy these games, download links are prohibited, and at most there's hints on that you can find them for free if you look around on the internet (or as we call it, "love the internet"). In the IRC channel, whenever a new game in the series is released, there's a link to a torrent or direct download in the channel topic. IRC and forums are two entirely different animals - the key point being that an IRC channel isn't public the way a forum is, even if it's "anyone can join".

Finally, a Deus Ex Machina submission. Definitely one of the very best RM2 hacks, alongside No Constancy and Gray Zone. Looked very solid, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Clear yes vote. Now do Gray Zone! :P

You seem to misunderstand what this site is about. It's not about showing off your gameplay skills, it's about using slowdown, rerecords and other tools provided by the emulators to produce videos showing what essentially is superhuman levels of playing.

I had this game when I was a kid and it frustrated me to no end! The music is pretty rocking. Probably gets repetitive in normal play, though. Clear yes vote.

I like this, so I'm gonna give it a yes. Having played a ton of Mega Man romhacks myself, I can safely say that Exhaust is one of the better. It has some great music (especially aforementioned chiptune rendition of Moskau), different weapon behaviour, boss behavious and boss weaknesses (too many hacks skip over these three), and overall solid stage design - with the esception of Flash Man. See the first beam in the fourth beam room? Not getting hit my that requires a nearly pixel-perfect jump off the platform. If you just walk and drop down, the beam hits you. The beginning of Wily 1 with the not seeing the spikes off to the right and having to Item-2 over there is pretty bad too. The Wily 4 boss deserves special mention, as it's one of the few times I've seen anything done with that boss beyond "destroy walls, destroy cannons" - but the other two I can think of merely axes the "destroy walls" part of it. Those two being Megaman Ultra and Deus Ex Machina. Speaking of which, Deus Ex Machina is a hack that deserves a TAS, as it's probably the best Rockman 2 ROM hack out there. It's made by the same guy who made No Constancy, and is as complete an overhaul as that one. Extra special credit to it for being the only Rockman 2 hack I have ever played that makes the Items not items, but special abilities for Mega Man - temporary invincibility, small jumps that can be made in air for hovering and a high jump, respectively.

Stupid thing desynced in the first 8-Tank level for me. It started going downhill from there. Up until that it was neat, though. And to present a differing opinion, the annotations were awesome. More runs should use those. All runs that have the slightest excuse to do so should use those. Especially if you can just turn them off/on with a button press if you don't want them/want them.

I don't really understand why Maria is considered a suboptimal character when she's definitely better than Richter, and the time lost only comes from rescuing her and the following cutscene. But yeah. Downloading, going to watch later!

That goes both ways, unassisted Japanese plays have been suspected for TAS's. I'm looking at you, Super Metroid. (also, will check this run out after getting a little more sleep.)
