I am finishing a movie of this game, i think it is a pretty cool game, and you can do a lot of crazy things, however, it is as long as an RPG, seriously, i've never seen a game with so many bosses and sub-bosses, i'm at stage 5 now and it is looking fine in my opinion.

Valkirye Profile (the best PS game i've ever played, there's a character name Lezard too)
Star Ocean: The 2nd Story
Tactics Ogre (not quite an RPG, but good anyway if you like strategy)
Tales of Phantasia

1. Tetris Attack (SNES)
2. Shining Force Series (Saturn, Genesis)
3. Bust a Groove (PS)
4. King of Figthers 95 (Neo Geo)
5. Marvel Vs Capcom II (Dreamcast)
6. Mark of the Wolves (Dreamcast)
7. Mario Kart: Double Dash! (Gamecube)
8. Super Punch Out (SNES)
9. Ninja Gaiden 1 (NES)
10. Smash Brothers Series (N64, Gamecube)
They are in order of knowledge, my strong genre are RPG/Strategy games, like Shining Force, because requires a lot of thinking.

Indeed, when you finish a level too fast you get a massive amount of score that slows down the movie a LOT. I'm just recording my playing without caring too much about the score. Here are my times:
Green Hill:
Act 1 - 0:27
Act 2 - 0:24 (didn't go for the boots, have to remake this stage)
Act 3 - 0.39
Marble zone:
Act 1 - 0:58

You are not the only one, i once tried to do a run of this game w/VirtuaNES and had the same problem, at the same stage the screen went black except the character, at first i thought it was only for that stage, but no, it continued and i couldn't finish it, i tried other versions and the same happened.

I improved this time by 9 seconds in my last movies, so the current time is 11:34.
Yeah, they deleted my account, and my site with it, maybe because i didn't updated in a long time.
I haven't seen your movie but i will give some tips that you can use:
- Don't attack while standing, always while jumping.
- Sometimes, an enemy hit can save you time (ex.: if you need to jump an hole, your regular jump would go higher than needed, but an enemy hit will make jump the necessary), even if you have to backoff to get hit, but make sure it saves you time.
- Try to have the circular slash always.
- Go for the flame skill at the Snow Stage, it may seem that you are losing time, but you will regain that time at the boss.
- Use the Quickslash Exploit (Down+B, as Josh said) on all the bosses you can. (only if you don't have the circular slash).
- Try to jump less as possible, running is faster.
- When you are climbing a wall, instead of climbing in Zig-Zag, climb only from 1 side, it is faster, however, it will only work if you are fast enough.
I don't remember any other tips i can give, perhaps you would want to watch my latest movie of this game, i sent it Palatinum's site, but i don't know when it will be published.
And if you are wondering...Yeah, i'm back in action, i'm making movies again :), this time, they'll be at Palatimun's site.

I have been working on some personal projects i have to finish as soon as possible and i can't spend any more time on speedruns/timeattack videos.
The time is still undefined, and i don't know if i'll be doing videos again. I just wanted to let you know.

I can't convert my movies to .avi because the lack of space my site has. Didn't know that trick you mention, wouldn't use either, if you pause the game (no matter if 1 second) would take away all the fun.
