I tried half of that when I was making v4. I haven't had success making two wall jumps in row from the same wall, however I haven't concentrated much on attempting it. I don't know about this game, but I know it's possible in SMB because Mana did it to get up to the ceiling at the beginning of 1-2. Edit: You should try to manipulate luck so you don't have to wait for the plant in 8-4. I remember there was a run on speedruns.org where the plant didn't get in the way.

Maybe you could try going up ontop of the ceiling before that and jumping towards the wall and doing a wall jump, followed by another wall jump from higher up.

Instead of going up to the ceiling, maybe you could try going through the wall at the end of 1-2. Edit: You didn't kill lakitu at the beginning of 4-1. Edit 2: Near the beginning of 4-2, I think it's possible to stomped both buzzy beetles.

I just checked it in Lunar Magic, the pipe goes up to the very top of the screen Why does that matter? Can't Mario go above the top of the screen in this level? I just tried using a high jump PAR code and I was able to get over the pipe, so I think you could save a little time by flying over it.

Is it possible to fly over the big pipe?

At the end of Soda Lake, why do you float to the exit rather than falling sooner so you can run on the ground?

Is anyone interested in a "time-attack" of this pretty straightforward nes game called Bigfoot? The best way to get your question answered is to submit it and see how people vote. http://tasvideos.org/SubmitMovie.html

Cool, now make an AVI of it. :) I can't, the game won't run smoothly if I try to record it, but I can explain my strategy. I was just about to go to bed, so if anyone's interested I'll explain it tomorrow.

48.07, used death as a shortcut, 0 re-records. Edit: 46.16 Edit 2: 45.93 Edit 3: 44.89 Edit 4: 42.78 Edit 5: 42.63 Edit 6: 42.17 Edit 7: 40.93 Edit 8: 40.05 Edit 9: 38.05! Pwnage. I think that's just about my limit unless I can come up with a better strategy.

9. Michael Fried with 9 (1 active today) Yay for Mickey Mousecapade! I guess it pays to make movies for games that no one cares about :)

First, I would recommend to the mods to not edit this post - he makes some valid points. I don't care whether his points were valid or not. He's already been reminded enough times, so he should know what the rules are and doesn't deserve to have his posts dealt with leniently by the mods. In case he wants to post again with the same points but in a more civilized manner, I have his message saved, so if he wants I can PM it to him so he can make the proper modifications and re-post it. Edit: Morimoto's video was certainly the starting point of everything Actually it wasn't. It definitely made save state runs much more popular, but there have been save state runs made way earlier. Yy's warpless SMB run, for example, was made more than 3 years earlier.

How about -- we start allowing movies to end as early as possible So if I make an SMB speed run, how am I supposed to know if it's faster or slower than Phil's? It'll be hard to tell whether we stopped at exactly the same time. I would also have to jump higher if I wanted to be able to stop the movie sooner, and that goes against my style of jumping as low as possible. I also might get lucky with the positioning of the axes that he throws and be able to jump even higher. Does that mean that I beat the game faster?

Jumps don't slow you down. It doesn't matter how many jumps it takes you to climb the steps because your velocity to the right will be the same.

That guy should explain his reasons. Michael, hope it's not you . I didn't vote.

Phil, why didn't you do the backwards jump at the beginning of 8-2? Edit: You took awhile to press A when you came out of the pipe as you entered the water area in 8-4. Edit 2: You could have touched the axe sooner. You shouldn't be beating the game slower just so you can stop pressing buttons sooner.

Stopping the movie earlier doesn't make the movie any more entertaining. All it does it make it harder to compare different runs.

I just tried playing SMB in FCE Ultra and I noticed that it wouldn't let me press left and right at the same time. Is there really no way to do this in FCE Ultra or is there some option that I have to change?

Well, my opinion is that a movie should end when it's impossible to make it fail to reach the ending. Suppose you're racing your car, and you're close to the finish line and going so fast that no matter how hard to step on the brakes you can't slow down fast enough to stop before the line. Suppose that you're time from starting the race to crossing the line was 1 minute, but after just 55 seconds you were close enough that you can't avoid finishing the race. What was your time for the race?

I think the SMB movie should end when Mario touches the axe. Bisqwit gave an excellent analogy to show why the movies shouldn't be stopped sooner. If you fall unconscious in a race 5 seconds before the goal (and it is noticed by the judges and the audience) but your car still crosses the goal line, does it count as a valid result? Suppose someone crosses the line 2 seconds before you, but he didn't fall unconscious. Who one the race, the person who crossed the line first or the person who fell unconcious and stopped giving the car input (by stepping on the gas and turning the wheel) first?

As others have mentioned already, you could have jumped to the pipe in 8-4 backwards. I never bothered testing it myself since it looks so much faster so I assumed it must be faster, so unless you tested it and it ends up that I was wrong all this time I don't think it should be accepted the way it is now. You should also make the coin room in 1-1 look better. Why couldn't you just press left as you were falling to enter the pipe more smoothly? Btw, I have a suggestion for your final version. Besides when you need to go higher to get coins or kill enemies, always make your jumps as low as possible. Edit: I have a question about how you start the levels. Do you turn around by pressing left for 1 frame, or do you press left and right simultaneously during that 1 frame (or does it not make a difference)?

I hope you realize that Mana's movie, if it will be handled, is the 5:01.27 long version mentioned earlier in this thread. You're competing against that, not the one with a long intro screen wait. I know that, when I said 1 second faster I was including the delays that you already took out, so I'm expecting it to be somewhere in the low 5:00s, maybe even 4:59 if I'm lucky. Anyway, I just finished 4-1, so I just need to do one more level and then I'll know for sure how long it'll be.

If the battle is on and there was a lot of sloppiness, shall we take some bets on how fast this NEW run will be? Yesterday I did the first two levels in my video, and I'll start working on it again soon. Luckily I didn't get any homework today so I'll probably get a lot done. I'll be able to tell you exactly how fast it will be when I'm done with 4-2 because I don't know of any ways to improve 8-1 to 8-4, so I can just check how much ahead of my old movie I am after 4-2 and subtract that from 5:03.73. As for predictions, I'll guess my run will be about a second faster than Mana's.

If "it can be improved" would be reason enough not to publish, then there probably wouldn't be any published movies at all really. ;) And missing coins doesn't matter - he aims for the fastest time. Everything else is just an added bonus. It wasn't just that it can be improved, it was that he did some parts slower than I did. Also, there were coins he could have gotten that wouldn't have cost him any time. Btw, I finished the first two levels of my run. After 1-1, I'm ahead by 84 frames, mostly because he took awhile to press start, but I think he also lost a few frames in the coin room. After 1-2, I'm ahead by 85 frames, but I'm not sure if I did the last part perfectly so I'll see if I can come up with a way to improve it. Edit: I redid the warp zone part and now I'm 90 frames ahead after 1-2.

Why should your video stay and his video not get published just because he missed a few coins and didn't do things absolutely perfect. Yes, I know the goal is absolute perfection. I am well aware of that. My point is that he comes a whole lot closer to perfection than your video does, Michael. Because some parts of his video were significantly worse than my video, and I noticed the mistakes the first time I watched it while watching it at full speed. It could probably be over a second faster by just fixing the inaccuracies. If he's gonna add in a new glitch to make it faster, he should at least keep the rest of it as good. Edit: Fried said if he can find time then he will probably make a new perfect version. Unless either him or Phil can guarantee a new version within a few days then I think Bisqwit should go ahead and publish this one, if he gets the okay that is. It shouldn't be too much work for Bisqwit seeing how the file will be pretty small. I'll try to get it done within a few days, but I can't make any promises because it all depends on how much time I decide to spend playing Mario Kart 64 and also how much homework I get. Btw, before I make too much of my run, does anyone know if Phil found any new strategies or is he just gonna make Mana's run more accurate?

I voted no because there were a few places where he lost a few frames so it's not perfect, and he also missed some coins and made some jumps higher than they had to be. If I find the time I'll probably make a new version myself and make it completely perfect.
