I've just got into clocktown. Now how much i beat AKA by depends because imunsure of exactly where he stopped input. I exit the last screen of text before gaining control on frame 33249. AKA's movie finishes on frame 33299. AKA, you said your movie went up to the last text before gaining control. Did you stop input after pressing the final input on this final box, or was it on the box before finishing up on the final box. Anyway, at the moment i should be 50 frames ahead at least. I'm very pleased with this as it means a highly optimised start to the run. I will try and encode an AVI for tomorrow before progressing. Let's just hope the desyncs are merciful when they come...

Loved the WIP. Can't believe i haven't been following this. I agree with Comicalflop though. If those shots wern't taken into the ground then you would have 100% shot accuracy at the end.

http://www5.spread-it.com/dl.php?id=695d97dced4eef919bd5f470f081912c0145fff7 Here is a save state for the beginning of the last boss stage. I have updated the submission, completion time is the same but I let the movie run for an extra 5 seconds to ensure that everything was recorded. It seems to have worked as the movie from this save state has ran fine for me. I have sent the updated file to Bisqwit so it should be up here soon.

I don't know how relevant this is but when i first started making this movie the last 5 seconds usually desynced. I only noticed it because i would stop the movie for review when landing on the button at the end of the level, however, i then started to stop recording after exiting the results menu so it never appeared. Perhaps that's what this is.

Shit...yet again. Too late. Is it not possible for this to be reinstated to the workbench after making the update?

The game will definitely desync if there is a save file in file 1. That's probably what happend.

Shit. The last few frames of input have become lost somehow. I'll cancel this, fix it and resubmit tomorrow. Sorry.

Because Petrie is adamant he won't do it i've decided to start looking at this game. It really is too good to waste. 1) I love the game and know it well. 2) I've had good experience with the Mupen and it seems to be extremely robust towards desync (not even 1 during my Gex TAS). Just this morning I TASed from gaining control until the deku transformation scene. Looking back at it it is very well optimised, possibly even perfect. It has yet to desync. I'll post a WIP once getting to Clock Town if it is faster than AKA's (which i can't watch so i just have to stop input roughly where i imagine he did). I am willing to go through with this and with such a large team behind me I should be successful. However, if everyone still has their hearts set on Petrie i'll stop and we can all wait until he has a change of heart.

Ah, right..... Check out the youtube links on the thread. You can see most of the run that way, apart from the last 6 remotes and final boss, which I haven't bothered to put up. If anyone wants it i'll make it up.

That is part of the movie. It is what happens when each menu is skipped optimally. Just let it run. The ding is the sound the game makes when a menu is skipped. The same sound is heard upon exiting back into the media dimension as i skip a menu there too. Yeah, i'll fix up my submission text.

They are my initials. I chose not to use my full name because of the scale of this site and the amount of people that would see it if i were to make a bad submission/ass of myself. I was right in that decision to be honest as i did make bad submissions and an ass of myself in my earlier days (i've come a long way in 3 months). I will probably only use my full name in the submission of a very high profile run eg. if i follow through my MM plans.

There are instances which i choose to double jump where a single jump would suffice, however, in those cases i need to perform a double jump on said platform and so need to have reached a certain height for it to activate. One example would be the at the very start of the second remote on www.dotcom.com (the first tron-esque level). VANDAL -- Funnily enough the boss fights are the most highly optmised part of this game. Gilligex Isle -- Must hit blue fireballs at tribal men. Done as near to the cauldron as possible and not one is missed. Mooshoo Pork -- Damaged by flicking the switch. I double back on him (this would be very difficult to do realtime without taking damage) and the switch is hit on the very frame that it is reset. Gexzilla vs. Mecharez -- Damaged by kicking his ass. Has two attacks; jetpack and jump on building or hand-to-hand. Luck manipulated so that each attack is jetpack and land on building allowing for 4 hits rather than 1 on the other attack. Buildings are also destroyed upon very frame of landing. Rez -- 1st phase damaged by jetpacking into the electricity in centre. Will only do so after using missiles. More survival than anything and so easy to optimise. 2nd phase must wait for button to be hit. Survival until then. Movie ended after final luck manipulation input to to ensure fastest time. Hope that explains everything.

Spockybiemmichab -- It should work, although i can't vouch for the Mupen too much, it is a very tempermental emulator. Angerfist -- Fair enough. I considered what you have stated before making this run, however, i felt that each remote showed new parts of the level and different moves and shortcuts to minimise this problem. I've organised the remotes as best I can to avoid repitition. I just hope this isn't the general consensus. Whew, this is intense.

A few gems in there and nothing bad. Not the best run i've ever seen but good nonetheless. Yes vote.

Just finished the run with a time of 00:49:55. Very pleased with the result as it is over 10 minutes faster than my target and 25 minutes faster than what i thought in the beginning. I should submit some time today.

That's still 20 minutes you have to sit through before you can resume. Many people probably won't spent 20 minutes TASing per day.

I tried doing this unassisted over the last couple of months and it was an excellent game to run. Most of what i did was modelled to a series of youtube videos finishing the game in about 00:22:00, which i can no longer find.

I agree entirely. I've played this game normally about 4 or 5 times so i have a good idea of where everything is. Someone needs to just do it and your help would be much appreciated. Whether you want to do a combined run or just assist here and there either would be great. I don't think this even needs tested, like you said the route is there and there are plenty of very knowledgable people on the forums to keep us right.

I agree. I was considering looking at it purely for that reason after finishing my Gex run (I'm reasonably confident with the Mupen now). I do really love this game and someone needs to bite the bullet for a few months to just get it done. I'm not commiting myself to anything but it would be feasible for me as i have a lot of spare time between now and next September.

Although i agree with "The best TASes of all time won't get obsoleted, so I don't need to factor obsoleted runs in." it wouldn't be 'bad' to add them in. Just because a run is obsoleted doesn't make that run bad or the author bad for that matter. For example, Morimoto's Gradius movie in its day was brilliant, however, as TASing has progressed it is now seen as sloppy and unoptimized. A better example; Sprintgod's Sonic 3 & Knuckles run could never be called a 'bad' movie and until two weeks ago it was one of the best movies on the site. Even though it has been improved by ten minutes this will always be a good run.

Wow, we can't even get a single TAS of MM off the ground, let alone a bigame movie.

Upthorn -- Seems to be a fairly decent list, but only really serves as a top ten of the present and not of all time. In which case i would expect to see names such as Phil Cote and Walker Boh. In either case most names on your list would remain and the top three would be relatively unchanged.

If you and i are thinking of the same thing...allow me to explain. When i use a karate kick to get over a wall the jump must be timed so that the ledge is caught at the top of the jump so Gex is pulled up. This causes a pause while the game decides whether Gex is still in the air or not. The only other way aound this is to jump normally over the wall which is slower. Or you may be reffering to the instant double jump trick (which i discovered). I was going to wait until my submissions text to explain this but i may aswell do so now. Gex has two jumps; a single jump, and a double jump (where he bounces off his tail to jump higher than normal). The double jump is activated by jumping once and then holding A in midair so that Gex double jumps upon landing. Many ledges and shortcuts can only be reached by double jump. Now having to jump normally and then having to jump once more to double jump wastes a lot of time, thankfully i discovered that while karate kicking i can hug close to the wall and when i get too close the karate kick sequence is broken. Gex then pauses in midair before falling slowly to the ground, this tricks the game into thinking he has already jumped and i can then instantly activate a double jump saving a good few seconds. Hopefully that is what you were reffering to. If not just say so and i'll see what i can do. Thanks for the feedback :)
