I tried to use the links in the FAQs to download this emulator, but they have never worked for me where all others have. Are these links down at the moment? Or can anyone provide a good working link so that i can download the rerecording FCEU.

Sigh...N64 TASing is infuriating. It either freezes, Desyncs or just plain doesnt work. In fact that raises something i need to ask. I read that when Guanobowl was making his OoT TAS he had massive Desync problems, but did he always use the same rom or did he change each time? Now this isn't explained very well in the FAQ, but is desyncing a chance process. For example, if i make a movie on my computer and it desyncs would someone else be able to make a similar movie with the same ROM and emulator but have it go smoothly.

Also, i have to find out if windspeed can be subject to luck manipulation. I thought it would have been, however... Usually wind goes up to 9mph, but on the Marion Club course i got eagles on the first two holes (par 4) and on the third (par 3) a shy-guy appeared and the wind shot up to 18mph, which i hadn't seen before. I think wind speed might depend on the quality of the player, which could prove annoying if the player is perfect :p

As far as frame advance goes. Sometimes if you hold the key and then press the frame advance button it won't work (a little like 'pause'), however, if you time it so that you are at the frame immediately before, stop on that frame, hold the desired button while you resume into full play it should work fine.

Yeah, i ran the first few holes. I managed to get them in without putting. However, to be completely optimized each would have to be a pin shot (ie. drops perfectly from the sky into the hole) and although i haven't tested enough i don't think the games engine is astute enough to do this on every hole. It is worth investigation though, and to those familiar with the game it would be extremely impressive.

I guess that using the mouse is the only way to properly emulate a DS. From what i've heard DS ROMs are difficult to come by because nintendo has made every effort to copyright them from every viable way. And like you said, from the looks of things Wii emulation would cost more than the console itself, and if anything like the N64 TASs, ROMs would be even more unreliable and so of little use to us. I have seen PS2 emulators floating around on various sites, however, i assume that they are very experimental and have never tried them out myself. Also, as far as PSone emulation goes i personally wouldn't stick a treasured CD into my drive and mess about with the game in the way we do for making TASs, which is particularly nasty because i think ISOs are a bad way to emulate they only usually come segmented. Not as convenient as the full game we get with Roms.

Yeah i've realised that. Even those ROMs listed by GoodN64 are rather shaky. I guess it's just a question of finding a good website.

I think i will. I reckon, since my recent attempt, i know the game better. I should be able to churn out an invincibility glitch speedrun rather quickly.

Yeah. If it's a level or stage based game always have a save at the start of each level and use a different one to re-record as you play through it. Then watch it back to check if it's perfect, if not then try again. There's honestly nothing worse than having a glaring error half way through a movie...trust me.

I'm about to have a crack at this game. This was great in my younger days. Anyone else play it? Any suggestions for routes?

In my opinion the GBA section is looking bare. Would it be worth TASing the NES classics range, although most of these titles are already up on the NES page it might beef up the GBA page. There may also be little differences...

Just a thought... Personally i think activating the invincibility glitch would make the game less entertaining, however, it would be much faster. Out of curiosity, should i record a run using it, would that interest anyone?

I think the first person race was the weakest part. At the moment im redoing and have just bettered the 1st level, and am trying to improve on the second as i've been told that it's not optimal.

I chose the Genesis version because that's the console i played it on as a little boy. Also, i think the Gens_movie_9g is a very reliable emulator. Especially when recording (it has a little red dot in the bottom right!!). As far as the 2nd level goes it did look good to me. The logic was good, i only ever back tracked once, however i think it got a bit odd at the end watching back. Also, ybbnun, that link doesn't work....

Yeah that is quite clearly better. But even you saw that the traction on that track is really bad (its somewhat like the hover boots from OoT) and saw i was easily fooled into thinking that that was the best that could be done. I'm definitely going to have another crack at that game at some point, not for a week or so, because the last week of getting that TAS finished up was quite intensive. If i see woody one more time......

Sigh...not too good then. However, it says in a comment there that it wasn't entertaining because there is no skill in slowing a game based entirely on reflexes. I always thought of TASing as playing a game perfectly, then playing it back in real time while appreciating the skills on show. Warioware is one of the most reflex inducing games on the GBA...

I think (i hope) emulation will not go down the same route as music, and even if it is it shouldn't happen for a long time. It'd be a real shame if emulation was to go down due to piracy. We can hardly be blamed, can we? As far as i know using emulators and ROMs is completely legal as long as you already own the original console and game. That works perfectly for us, i mean, you can hardly properly TAS a game if you don't own. We TAS games we've owned for years, and only use emulation because its the only way to do what we do.

I'm doing an N64 TAS at the moment. However it gets to a certain frame and freezes, every time. Chances are that this is just a bad ROM, however, are then any suggestions as to if it could be anything else? I don't really fancy redoing everything...

OK. I'm going to pull this game from submissions and ill polish it up real nice. I also think that my notes were a bit vague and misleading. Star Collection was never an ambition of mine in this TAS. Im looking at various things at the moment, but since this is THE game of my childhood i hope to get up a perfect TAS shortly.

A while ago i tried to TAS this game.....but stopped. However i'm thinking of doing it again. I know that every mini game lasts the same length of time, however, would absolute perfection in these games along with a speedy completion entertain everyone?

I've begun work on a TAS for Mario Golf for the GBC, i've got ideas in my head as to how i want to do it but im up for suggestions. Effectively i want it to be done perfectly. The best and fastes score on each hole. However, to me this would be entertaining to watch but i don't know if it would be the same all round....

As far as the early levels go (which is all that you saw!) they were optimized and in my opinion the first level is 100% optimal. In my shame i have to admit that the fourth tyre on Buzz could have been a little faster looking back but the first three were perfect. I suppose i could have played rex in the centre of the screen in the interest of entertainment if preempting enemies isnt everyones thing haha. When Woody uses his pullstring there is massive (in TAS terms of course) stallage and so i tried to limit it, thus meant using the balls instead of hooks.

I agree, by the looks of things it is the very user friendly aspects of the VBA that will introduce those that are not as familiar with the retro games into TASing. The GBA games are the most modern and so the games contain the depth, cleverness and prettiness of the modern gaming era, but they are presented in the same way as the SNES making them easier to TAS.

I've read in the past that PSone games (and so i suppose any CD based TAS) can't be TASed properly because of disc reading differing between consoles. So that excludes basically the last three major consoles. Also, how will computers in the future, despite all their gigahertz, be able to emualate a touchscreen DS or the bizarre Nintendo Wii. All of which will have games we would love to TAS.
