I already knew that you can TAS with a keyboard and mouse, with the TAS Input Plugin. But I guess, what I was wondering is, if it's "easier" to TAS with an actual Nintendo 64 controller. But when watching those videos, it doesn't really seem so. It's probably more the game I'm TAS:ing that makes it so complex.

Yes, that's the one I've always been using. I thought that plugin were the only one with an analog stick crosshair thingy?

So, I'm currently TAS:ing my very first Nintendo 64 (or well, at least I'm trying). The first thing I noticed is that it's way more complex to TAS a Nintendo 64 game than anything before the PlayStation/N64 era. I won't mention which game I'm trying to TAS, but I will tell you that it's really hard (guess "way more time consuming" is what I should say) to TAS. What I'm wondering is if any of you who have made a complete N64 TAS ever made one with keyboard+mouse only? Am I maybe completely "off" by using only a keyboard and mouse? When I say time consuming I'm mostly thinking about the analog stick crosshair that you have to adjust, just about every frame, when you're TAS:ing (for example, Goldeneye). I learned how to TAS Genesis/SNES/NES games pretty quick, but when it comes to PlayStation and N64 games, I can't say the same, so maybe I just need some beginners help here...

So, I'm currently TAS:ing yet another game of my childhood, Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition. I'm past level 1 and have made some progress through level 2, but I can see that there's a lot of improvement to be made on the first level, but before I'm jumping onto that, I'm just going to see if it's entertaining at all... Let me hear what you think, please. GMV File: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1994644736/Jurassic%20Park%20-%20Rampage%20Edition%20%28USA%2C%20Europe%29.gmv Encode on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qEr79kDrok I'm basically just jumping through this level, but I guess there will be a little more action in the rest of the levels. The enemies in the first level is basically just standing still all the time

Don't want to be picky, but I think that it'd be a good idea to put in "hardest difficulty" in the right table from where the links are. I didn't mention it anywhere before, but yeah, there it is.

Yes, a screenshot of when I jump through the tank would be a great idea! Aha, I see, sgrunt. While we're at it, might I ask how you encoded that run in HD, Flygon? I always get some annoying blue line on the left of the video. And the video you encoded looks so much clearer than my encoding attempts. The usable encoders are pretty limited too, because most can't record 16-bit colors.

Why do we need another encode of it? You posted links to a pair of encodes in the 7th post in this topic. Maybe you forgot it? Nevertheless, I'm very excited that this was accepted!

I managed to get stuck in the ladder that comes after that one, I was like, it's SPIDERMAN, lol. This happened by getting boosted of by the enemy while climbing down, right when I got hit I pressed left and up a random amount of times.

Thanks for all your kind comments and votes! Aqfaq: If they, by "energy" mean the health, then I guess so, but it is hard to have a reasonably low life while still trying to beat every level as fast as possible. If you were to scroll away all the enemies in level 1 for example, you'd have to pray that once you've scrolled one away, it'd respawn on the left side and shoot you in the back instantly - it can happen if you're lucky. And trying to turn your back to get one of the enemies boost you forward in level 1 is no use, because you die instantly (no matter how much health you've got - if I remember correctly) In level 2 the only thing that can actually do damage to you, if you scroll enemies away, would have to been the chopper and the Terminator - if it shoots you, that is. I cannot stress enough how boring the police station can be, the only thing that can hit you in this level when scrolling away enemies is also the Terminator (he only hit me with one shot though...). Luckily I was actually unable to scroll the enemies away on the third floor (and still maintain a good time) - that's why I boosted the player on the second floor through the cop. If I didn't boost through the cop, two enemies would've spawned on the third floor while I reached the stairs on the second floor - scrolling enemies away while on stairs can be a real pain, and not to mention that you lose quite some time on doing it. Nevertheless, by boosting through the cop I even got better time when just scrolling the cop away, so no time lost :) The last level can be good in so many ways, I was actually pretty lucky to beat it with a tiny tiny bit of the last health bar by still having been hit by the Terminator twice. I too, hope that this gets published someday!

Bump. I managed to get through the tank with 2 full health bars and even a tiny bit of the third health bar, on Very Hard difficulty! So um... I'm past the enemies that houses around below where the tank is. I'm a little over 2 seconds faster than the run where I was playing on Easy difficulty. What I want to know though, is; Since it takes a little more frames to jump through the enemies, I decided to scroll the enemies away. Would I rather go for the fastest time or a run where I make it past all the enemies by blowing one away with a bomb, jumping through 2 enemies and scroll the rest away? Because I have a backup of both these runs, and it would be disappointing to see this run not being accepted. It takes about 20 more frames to kill/jump through a few enemies, but it may look a tiny bit more interesting. Edit: It probably sounded a little like it was a full run, but it is a run through, about the first half of the first level.

Yeah, the police station always looks boring.. I don't know what I could do to improve it, if you have any suggestions, please tell me how to improve it! Very hard difficulty is basically: No gun in the beginning of level 1. Enemies takes more damage before they die. You die easier. And I don't really know yet, but I think more enemies spawn either when it's on easier difficulty or when it's harder.

Thing is that you lose so darn much health when you jump through the tank on normal/hard/very hard so I don't know if it's really possible.

Here's another one, 1 second faster. I think it's as fast as it can get now. I don't see any point where I could've improved the run. http://file.shareyourfiles.net/B9_ML4/ Ready for submission?

Oh, sorry x2! I thought one wasn't created since someone told me to make a new one in the my discussion topic. You better remove that link from the quote as well in that case, Guybrush :P

Well you have to jump when the tank is turning around. You will also take a lot of damage so plan for that so you can get health powerups.

Are you still planning on making another run btw? :-P
I already did, but its 5:47 as opposed to your 5:32
In my latest record (only from reset to first part in level 2) I managed to jump through it! I created a WIP topic here btw: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=219462

I've been working on this run for about 5 hours now and I think I've completed the first level in a pretty fast time now, this run is only from reset to the phone booth in level 2, the first part. Tell me if you see anything I could've improved, please! I could really use some help/advise about what to do next... The thing is that since the screen doesn't scroll to the right after I've entered the booth I can't remove the enemies in the begining of part 2, since the screen needs to scroll in order for me to get rid of enemies. If I don't get rid of them there's like 3 cops and 2 hobos (or whatever they are) that I have to kill, it's a huge time killer. Note that it is possible to remove them if you move backwards at a very precise point before you've even entered the phone booth. Edit: I got arround the problem, and it's a little faster now! I'd still like to know what your thoughts are though. Edit by moderator: Your illegal link was removed. Please do not post links to illegal material in the future.

Thank you so much for making this post, you've inspired me to do yet another run! I tried to skip the tank a few times but never got around it. Is all I have to do just jump straight through it or do I have to jump a second time? I also have a few other questions... a little offtopic I guess, but when I have once clicked on the "Frame advance" key, how do I let the game run like normal, without having to hold that Frame advance key? Sorry for my newbie question Are you still planning on making another run btw? :-P

Isn't rerecording allowed? I thought it was... Is there a function in the emulator that's hosted on this site called "Frame precision"? because the emulator I used, the one from speedruns.net didn't have that. I think you should verify if that emulator is OK. http://www.speedruns.net/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,68/func,fileinfo/id,22/
