If you're having trouble viewing the avis you probably need to update your codecs. I just use the K-Lite codec pack. You can find it for free here.

Kanji isn't terribly difficult. It just has a high learning curve. At least for reading. Writing is a different story.

If it is Im kinda ashamed. I tried this jump more then twice and when I didn't succeded after like 50 tries I redid a part to get the wing boots instead.
Take this as a "iirc", it's been a while. Though the poison that SlyBeast mentioned I'm certain about. You might have to use the squid though.

Why would that be faster?
You stay out of the enemies' way. Then again those guy are worth about 250 apiece so it might be a money thing.

Sorry man but that's a stupid question ;) Atleast in the context.
I know, I remembered it going somewhere, but I didn't remember where. Figured it'd give a chuckle maybe. ^^;;

English alphabet is ...NOPQRSTU... if you remove the Q and the R you get ...NOPSTU... Then take just part of it and you get PS. It's a silly joke. *nod* I'll just do it over then.

I was replaying a movie, then I used the savestate trick to continue playing it and made some progress. Then I didn't hit "movie end" but I still have the save state, I stopped playing again to watch what I've done so far. It stopped at the place where I used "movie stop" last (ie yesterday's work). I tried to refresh the newer state and it didn't work. Is there anyway to make that save state work again? (Yes) Is there an easy way to do it? (Probably not) Is there anyone out there willing to post the difficult way to do it?

Is there a way to reassociate a save state file with a movie? Or is it lost forever?

Question: Which bosses can be defeated by simply dodging and waiting? The first can, I'm not sure about the rest.

Yup, open it up in a hex editor and make use of your delete key. (Heck, notepad or notepad++ prolly'll work if you know what you're looking for)

19:36 Actually that one is a possible one, but considering killing the squid gives him health (food), which he needs later on, taking more damage would put him in a worse situation, also note that you pause for a while when you get hit, and that those squids hurt quite a lot.
No, not getting hit by him, hitting him, if you watch it he runs ahead of the squid, pauses, waits for the squid to go past then jumps up and finishes him off, would it be faster to jump up and hit him, then continue up and kill him on the top platform. Unless I'm recalling something incorrectly and the squid turns around everytime when he gets hit instead of just when you hit him in the front, (which if you hit him at the very last second might net you some time as well, just no meat)
23:25 No, the clapper had stopped, jumping there would have given him an headache, also the clappers damage over the entire screen, so if he had run past him, he would take damage and be stunned for a small while.
I was pretty sure he has a good second or so before the screen flash.
27:15 Why don't you try where it goes :P As far as I remember it leads back to beyond the door he just came in, which of course is not desireable.
Then would it be faster to use that at 28:52 as he's coming back?

For that matter, that place where you grabbed the Wing Boots to fly that short part, that's doable without the boots as well. 2nd dungeon, would it save time if you went for the elixer and the wing boots first? Use what's left of the 1st Wing Boots to skip the first part of the climb. After the mist city at 16:00, would it be faster to stay on top of the blocks there? At 16:36 is there a particular reason you used Deluge? At 17:08 would it be faster to skip those two enemies? At 19:36, would it be faster to hit the squid twice instead of waiting on it? At 22:21 would it be faster to stay on top? At 22:41 would it be faster to be hit by the squid? At 23:25 would it be faster to jump over the clapper? At 27:14 where does that hole go anyway? At 31:05 would it be faster to just hit that guy twice, or does it not push him back enough? At 34:28 Why does he have two hand daggers?

It seems that the Land's End shortcut is a dead end. I've tried forcing myself into the treasure chest using the enemy. I've tried forcing myself on top of the enemy using the wall, and the spring platform. (Heck, I even defeated the Shysters to see if anything happened. It didn't, they just respawn when you reenter...) I'mma try to get my hands on a Japanese version to see if it makes a difference. Even if I were able to scale the cliff (which I still think is doable), and I can get around the barrels (not sure if they even block you), I wouldn't think that they'd allow you to exit through the other path in that room. (Seeing as they cut off the the one southeast of the spring).

I have to say, I was very impressed with it. All in all real speedruns are *much* more difficult to pull off than emulated ones. And to pull of one of this quality on such a long game must have been frustrating. That said Zelda 64 isn't that difficult of a game. I've done a 3 heart, no death, one chance run before just for shits and giggles and I've seen someone do a no-damage run. (Both nowhere near as fast as that though) So I agree there's not much more that can be done beyond that on an N64. And because I don't know of a movie recording, time warping N64 emulator (let alone one that emulates the analog stick well), I don't see an emulated run getting done anytime soon.

I on the other hand have made no progress at all. Real life plus this computer doesn't like things that sync. I'll try later on a faster computer with more ram.

I haven't done much recording in a while, but I noticed that it desyncs if I'm playing back my recording at a speed faster than normal (like to skip the dialogue scenes or "cutscenes"). I'm not sure if this is a way to consistently stop it from desyncing, but please let me know your findings on this before I start recording all the way through!
I thought that too. But I've ran it at 8, 17, 20, and 35. They all desync at a different spot.
Avin wrote:
By the way, given the recording limits, are you going to be doing it in two segments, or do you think you would be able to do it in a single movie? I don't think it's possible unless you get the Kero Sewers shortcut to work.
If I can a single movie. As this is my first attempted speedrun though, probably not going to make it.

Well, I eventually wound up going this route: Three jumps on the first four terrapins. Two jumps on Kinklink. (I was in error, your FP recharges automagically before you face Bowser) Two jumps on the goombas blocking Toad. Two jumps on the goombas on the rotating flower. One jump on the flying turtle holding Toad That's a total of ten before the Hammer Bros. For a total of 14 before Croco. Which is 5 extra points of damage per jump iirc. I'm not Ghoti2. The sig is from Mitch Hedburg, quite possibly the best non-mainstream comic. I'm going to make it a point to get Culex. I'm going to make it a point to take as little damage as possible. (Always block, force misses as often as I care to, it's probably very possible to take no damage at all through timed hits.) I'm not going to use the star-death trick. I'm going to try to find a way to skip to Land's End if possible. And I'm going to have to find a way to keep it from desyncing every 5 minutes. >_< EDIT: It seems to be based on how fast I'm running the framerate... odd. I might have to try another emulator to get this one finished.

Jump is more frames than Punch. A timed Punch is equal to a regular Punch speedwise. The Kinklink has 60 hit points iirc. You can get 52 out of your first jump, meaning 54 if you've used it twice in the castle. (You can only use it 3 times b/c of FP unless anyone knows of a way to recharge FP in the castle) You get low 40s out of a jump on the hammer bros. They have from 47-50 hit points apiece. (I'm guessing 50) Each time you use the jump you gain .75 points on power. So you'd have to use it 12 or so times before you can kill a Hammer Bros in one hit. That seems a bit high for a small gain, but I didn't know if it'd significantly quicken the pace of Croco and Mack. It might make up for the wasted turns for FP refills. The quickest place to level up your jump is in Bowser's Castle (because no ending song and dance, but also no exp.). But I don't remember a random FP Max thing so that might not work. And it also might save some time in Mid-Late Game if I run into a situation where I only have 4 FPs left, don't have the Lazy Shell yet, and don't want to waste Mario's Turn. 10 hit points can make a lot of difference sometimes.
