In all honesty, I think the best way to reconcile is just to make a sub/splinter site with greater emphasis on entertainment, while tasvideos keeps itself devoted to "gotta go fast". Would that cause huge problems for people? Hell, you could just have a YouTube channel that hosts entertainment runs. The community could run it and preserve runs that are decided entertaining but not worthy of a new category or obsoleting an existing run. Basically, I just see a viewpoint that majorly differs from the site's intended goal and could be satisfied with minimal hassle. Let the official runs be as fast as possible, and you can publish entertaining runs for fun, informally.
I like this idea!

the ending of Perilous Pit where you decide not to die
The "die and complete level" trick can only be used on levels that don't have oracle, and PP has one. In general, using glitched level exits on levels with oracle in will make the game uncompleteable. Also, dying and falling on the oracle won't work. There is also another known glitched level exit: Enter invalid door (if door is on air, it is most likely invalid) and keen teleports to (0,0) and the level will end.
I didn't mean it like that, just the way the flames don't seem to kill you despite clearly going through you.

There are lots of little things about this that I love. Shooting things because you can, riding the Bouncers, the ending of Perilous Pit where you decide not to die, that one tiny zip, racing upwards through vertical shafts, the many narrowly avoided deaths on Isle of Fire, the expert pogo manipulation. It's a short and sweet run. Could you do Keen Dreams?

It was mentioned in the IRC that Tyrian didn't emulate under any rerecording emulator. BUT, OpenTyrian (http://code.google.com/p/opentyrian/) seems to work fine under hourglass!

This is an ancient problem. I used to have it with tyrian, way back when I was a kid on dos games - I couldn't shoot and move in a certain diagonal direction (think it was up and left like you) at the same time.

Isn't there a hack for SMW that makes it less laggy somewhere?

If what you have in mind isn't appropriate for tasvideos, you're welcome to make them for youtube and post them/about them nonetheless.

No, best ending is where the post-game cinematics differ depending on what you did prior to ending input, and you picked the one deemed the 'best' (usually by being the most difficult to get, the most rewarding to see, outright bring called it, etc). A good example of bad ending/best ending is sonic 3 & knuckles. If you make it to the last stage with all the chaos emeralds, you go onto Doomsday zone and the ending is different. If you don't, you get a shorter ending and get taunted.

It's a shame that you can skip the bosses with your L+R trick, but at the same time hilarious. :D

The pc game Psycho Waluigi would be good for scorerunning, since almost everything drops a coin when destroyed, and it is not always a trivial task to collect the coin (e.g. in autoscrolling sections, sections over pits, also taking into account that you're given points for time left so there's a tradeoff to be considered) The N64/PC game Wetrix has two timed modes that would be good for scorerunning, since while the optimal strategy is pretty obvious (make as many lakes and duckies as possible, get rainbow multipliers, stop ice, etc) the devil is in the details. There's already a TAS for this game - can it be improved?

I have a 'proof', but I'm not sure how robust it is. Imagine tiling this board with only vertical dominos, leaving holes in opposite corners. By the manhattan metric, the distance from hole A to hole B is even - for them to be adjacent, and thus place a domino there - it needs to be odd and 1. We can imagine shifting or rotating a rectangle into the hole. But this changes the distance by 2! No operation we can perform will change it by 1. Therefore it seems impossible to fully tile. But I might be missing a different starting point.

What's the finest level of quantization the NES can produce music at? Can it only change the tone once per frame or more often than that, and if so how often?

An analogy I came up with once: Speedrunning is like playing an instrument - you have to do it all in one go, and it takes years to master. TASing is like making music in a program - you get as much time as you want to revise the product, and when it's played back you see none of the blemishes. Theoretically you could make perfect music on your first go, but in both cases you need large amounts of knowledge coming into it to create something pleasing as the end product.

Is this going to be so substantially different as to need a new category? glitched 96-exit?

I'm kind of hoping we don't get a thousand mega man songs just because they're instantly recognizable, myself. I want things I wouldn't have thought of looking up without this contest.

I haven't played Terraria, but what would be the goal of a Minecraft TAS? I don't know if the game has an end.
Pick an arbitrary difficult goal like constructing X useful redstone device or an awesome house and construct it as fast as possible: -Starting from nothing. -Starting on a map with the resources but nothing constructed. Or you could complete the Aether mod as fast as possible. Or you could complete a 'survival' map's challenges as fast as possible.
