When people come to tasvideos.org, surely they notice the randomly chosen starred movie before anything else. I didn't notice the preamble until this topic pointed it out to me.

I could try helping over the next university break, though I get the impression I won't be able to do it alone.

Illari's encodes seem to have audio desync, at least when watching in flowplayer/chrome/windows XP.

I'm currently using Folding@Home, is it worth switching to something else?

Ah, I didn't think of the 'change directions in mid air' thing. That would do it.

If you haven't yet, you could use the techniques outlined in http://tasvideos.org/MemorySearch.html to find the x/y co-ordinate addresses and write a simple LUA script to display them on screen. In Monkey Temple Ruins, there seem to be two ways of going down a ledge - jumping before it such that you just skirt the corner (or further out if it suits you) and glitchily walking off the edge. When is one better than the other? For instance, at 3:35 you jumpkick to a ledge then glitchily walk off of it - would waiting just a bit and falling with more momentum get you down faster? Similarly for other places like 4:31 and 5:23. Pulling yourself up at 5:09 looks quite costly - it's not possible to delay the jump and skip it? Nothing else seems obviously improvable, so assuming you've attempted to optimize everything using every quirk of the engine you know I doubt someone with less experience of the game could improve it outside of random frames/discovering a trick through serendipity.

I don't think there are any known further improvements at this time.

I imagine you could set up a macro script (i.e. with AutoHotKeys which I know lets you choose which process a keyevent is directed to) that, whenever you pressed or held a key, would send it to both windows open. As long as you're always on frame advance that would ensure both remained synchronized.

Pretty good introduction to an obscure game and efficiency is impressive. I say yes.

That looks cool. It might be interesting to compare up to date and obsolete runs for a movie by comparing their averaged snapshots.

My nomination for inconsequential typo of the year: On this page: http://tasvideos.org/forum/profile.php?mode=editprofile "Do not use images hosted at Angelfire, Geocities or Imageshack, because those images may suddenly turn into huge "site bandwidth exhausted" error messages, which do not look good as avatars." However, Geocities has been taken down forever, and so it is impossible to host an image there. :)

Looking at the TAS, I do have to wonder. Can the current SMB movie still be improved in a way? Or is it one of those movies we can truly call perfect?
Let's call it perfect, so it'll be more astonishing when it gets beaten again. :D

I like it! Here's the full smb any%, kind of boring :(
This seems wrong, somehow - like you're losing colour information and not getting the full breadth of what's happened in the movie. I mean, look at the ones on the first page - they're absolutely flooded with colour and little variations, this one looks more like a gif. If it produces an average for every frame thus far and then just tweaks the average, rather than summing up the total amount of red/green/blue for each pixel (31-32 bits per channel per pixel won't overflow even for a movie that lasts 24 hours, btw) and THEN dividing by number of frames then this is going to introduce inaccuracy. If you already are doing that, then I guess SMB1 really is that boring, surprisingly enough. EDIT: Try remaking it in the v2 script.

Very rarely is there enough work for all five characters to do at once, so it doesn't feel very superplay-y. Gets a bit better at the end because more people = statues go down faster, so it depends on how demanding late game is. If you think 5-player co-ordination would be novel and useful more and more, then by all means continue. Also, in cases where some extra firepower will help but there's not enough room for everyone to fit, wouldn't it be faster to send all the people you can't fit back? (You do this some times, but not every time - for example, 0:22 didn't use everyone)

Hot damn. Just to satisfy personal curiosity, will manipulating an item from a bonus game -ever- be useful?

Right, because it's writing bytes to memory, and there's no way to write the 11111111 byte. On the other hand, you could use it early on if it only removes things you haven't yet gotten or are easy to reobtain.
