I most humbly agree with Zurreco concerning the proportion of jimsfriend's posts formatted like this.

The rerecord count seems to indicate that he spent more than a day (or even a week) total on this project.

I was under the impression that people usually don't take fast-forward into account or dock points if fast-forward is necessary for enjoyment when rating a run. Perhaps a poll could determine whether this is the case for most people or not. Anyways, I still think that applying a "no out-of-bounds" restriction to the X-Ray Scope is the best way to go, rather than banning it altogether. That way, the only thing we'd miss is the Gravity Statue, which happens to the most boring part of the game (period).

This is why the glitched run has the lowest rating of all published runs; because excessive glitching is not nearly as watchable as each room being expertly played.
The glitched run has such a low rating because of the 5-minutes of X-Ray climbing through the statue room. A 100% run using X-Ray glitching would not have anything approaching that level of monotony, especially if we went with Tub's Non-Arbitrary Restrictions (TM). The glitched beams are an entirely different matter. The murder beam was ugly, repulsive, unentertaining, and known to easily crash the game. Despite poor viewer response to it, it was used anyway because it was the fastest way to kill Mother Brain at the time. Fortunately, we've found faster and more entertaining methods since then. The space/time been has never been used because it's highly unstable, known to behave differently in different emulators, and breaks any semblance of game logic. Also, using it would probably provoke worse viewer response than the murder beam did. The chainsaw beam, on the other hand, hasn't been used yet because nobody has bothered. IIRC, it comes with none of the major drawbacks of the other two beams (unstability, lag, sprite glitching, etc.), but also comes with the potential for a very entertaining Ridley fight. The only thing that remains to be seen is whether it's any faster or not.

Lyle in Cube Sector is an awesome freeware, retro-style, action-adventure platformer (read: Metroidvania). You can get it here. This topic is for the purposes of planning a speedrun (TAS or not) of the game. There are three different versions on the site: 1.04, 1.05a, and 1.05. The main differences are as follows:
1.04 -> 1.05a
- Infinicubes are kickable. :-)
- Lyle is harmlessly bumped by slow-moving green cubes. :-)
- Game ported to MMF2.
- One of the songs was replaced due to compatibility issues :-(
- Music starts about half a second into the song. :-(

1.05a -> 1.05
- Resolution doubled to increase fullscreen mode's compatibility with some monitors. Otherwise, it's graphically identical.
- No other changes.
I vote on using 1.05a. Despite having a couple musical issues, the gameplay changes may make for a more interesting TAS. I don't suggest using 1.05, because it would bring nothing new to the table other than encoder headaches. Any objections? Now onto the route. The game allows you to save and quit at any time and you always restart at the same place (Lyle's house), so the route can easily be broken down into segments.
LYLE IN CUBE SECTOR
ANY% - W/SAVEWARPS

Segments 1 & 2
- Get Cube Lift (12,9)
- Get Cube Jump (25,11)

Segment 3
- Get Cube Kick (2,11)
- Fight Klobbur (8,2)
- Get Phantom Magic Cube (7,2)

Segment 4
- Get CP Orb at (15,7)
- Fight Buzzby (22,4)
- Get Giant Cube Lift (21,4)
- Get HP orb at (20,6)
- Get CP orb at (19,5)
- Get CP orb at (20,11)

Segment 5
- Get CP orb at (10,4)
- Get both CP orbs at (13,1)
- Fry egg (16,2)
- Get CP orb at (16,4)

Segment 6
- Cash in all 7 CP orbs at CP room (16,11)
- Use teleporter (15,11)
- Arrive back in teleporter room (8,8)
- Get HP orb at (9,11)
- Teleport to final area (5,12)

Estimated TAS time: ~15 mins

Notes:
- All coordinates are relative to the top-leftmost accessable square on the map.
- For reference, Lyle's house is at (11,8).
- All HP orbs are optional. They are merely included here for the convenience of an unassisted runner.
- At least 7 CP orbs are required to complete the game.

To Be Tested:
- Skipping the CP Orb at the end of Segment 4 (20,11) in favor of getting the Dog's CP Orb at (4,5) during Segment 5.
- Skipping the CP Orb at the beginning of Segment 4 (15,7), combining Segments 3 & 4, and collecting BOTH the Dog's CP Orb (4,5) and the CP Orb at the end of Segment 4 (20,11)
- Not using the teleporter room during Segment 6.
Map of the Route Note: Segments 1 & 2 not pictured due to their obviousness. (Map blatantly stolen from this guide) Aside from a couple untested things that I noted, I'm pretty sure this route is solid. Oh, and here's pictorial evidence that this game dislikes sequence breakers. >:(

It's simple. We make a short game taking place in the early 1900s about the president being kidnapped by ninjas. We of course have two endings. One where you rush in and defeat the last boss, and he kills the president. Another, where you take your time, get the president out, then finish off the last boss. We have the game support TASing and TAS it, and the category stays.
Sounds like the perfect candidate for the first TAS on that fancy-schmancy TAS VM thingy. The only problem with this plan is said game's nonexistence. Somebody could fix this. I bet it'd take five minutes, tops. Oh, and as long as we're joking, how about adding the category "Colors a Dinosaur"?

This discussion looks like it's becoming split-worthy.

If you're going to argue that a human being is different from property, whatever, let it be a cute fluffy kitten. Until the police arrives (if it does), there's still quite enough time to beat it senseless, or even worse. Your decision?
I'd interfere. Being more sentient than your average garden plant, your hypothetical abused child/fluffy kitten cannot be considered property in the traditional sense of the word. I agree with removing "Aims for fastest time." However, "Ignores delays caused by bonus effects" should stay, if only to indicate the movie in question does not exclusively aim for fastest time (ie fewest input frames). IIRC, some of the Sonic games (the 8-bit ones?) are particularly egregious examples of this.

Impressive. Most impressive. (For those unable/unwilling to download the video, it contains short TASes of Bunny Must Die, Cave Story (Egg Corridor), and Eversion (Level 1).)

A year or two ago I pretty much figured out the route for a Lyle in Cube Sector speedrun (any% w/savewarps). I never got around to making the run, but my estimate for an unassisted run was about 20 minutes. With tool-assistance I'm sure that sub-15 minutes is possible, meaning it's well within the site's attention span. :D Anyways, we should keep in mind that there is far more to PC gaming than freeware platformers. :P

This sounds rather promising, though I'm a tad worried about synchability between different computer set-ups. Have you done any tests to see if/how much that's an issue?

A playaround could be interesting. Also, dibs on Lyle in Cube Sector (another MMF game). I vow to make it have more categories than Super Metroid!

SRAM corruption isn't really a major glitch. You can't blame the programmers for not making the game fault tolerant enough to withstand power outages. In fact in this case, you're forcing the power outage.
I know the actual corruption isn't a glitch, but game's acceptance the faulty SRAM is. Most games since the frickin' password era have used checksums to determine if saved data is legit, so having the checksum bypassable (Chrono Trigger) or not there at all (Pokemon (?)) can be considered a programming oversight.

Why that order?
It's the closest I've ever come to doing an RBO on a console. >_> And I was just trying to think of the most arbitrary goals possible.
Warp wrote:
I vote for officially allowing three different categories on each game, where suitable: 1) Anything goes (including SRAM corruption). 2) Fastest without abusing SRAM corruption. 3) Fastest 100% completion.
We've been doing this for quite a while, except with "major glitching" instead of "SRAM corruption" (which counts as a major glitch). Also, we should keep in mind that many games have goals that don't fall into these categories, but make sense in the context of the game. Take for instance, games with multiple characters, such as Castlevania 3, SMB2j, and Rockman & Forte. But, yeah, we could stick those in the "Concept Demos" section, if we ever get around to properly using it.

My favorite boss fights were Crystal Snail, Wheel Gator, and Sigma 1. Simply awesome. And it looks like you used Maverick weapons much more often than your previous runs. Very nice.

I give this run a resounding "Meh." It just didn't feel like there was much unique and interesting content compared to the currently published runs, and most of the new content (read: Ridley and MB) was flat-out boring. That, and it's slower than the other 14% run, which was also more entertaining (regardless of how much you guys like to vilify Saturn).
