Congrats on getting this published! A note on the game's publication text: the names "Mystical Gems of Lascorbanos", "Coins of Tenure", and "Crown of the Ages" are strictly from the NES version. The DOS version calls them "rare gems, a sack of rare coins and a jeweled crown".

Can we add a link from this run's page to the recently-published DOS version? The DOS one is the original, after all.

I'm glad to finally see a run of this. This is a landmark game on the PC and one of its first scrolling 16-color platform games, several years before famous games like Commander keen did it. It's a big technical achievement, that unfortunately is mostly known for its shitty NES port. Also, great run and great explanation.

For the record, this is an established category on SRC.
So it is. And so are "100% without secret exits" and "two players but not one player with two controllers". However, I'm curious why these are established categories (as opposed to, say, "any% without world 3", or "using at most one cannon", or say "100% but skip boss levels where possible"). There might be good reasons for that but it's not particularly clear. (edit) Oh wait, looks like "One cannon" is a valid SRC goal. As is "gain 99 lives" and "any% including 9-1" and "any% without 8-7". I'm confused who decides on these; can any SRC user just add a goal they like?
how would you all feel about accepting it for now with the caveat that it would be obsoleted by a full cannonless run once one is made?
FWIW I didn't vote "no". But I would find it conceptually weird to have a "some cannons but not other cannons" run.

We have a lot more runs of SMB romhacks than I thought... but most of them don't get multiple branches either. More to the point, I didn't really find this entertaining. While I'm aware that this is a highly unique SMB hack, the run mostly makes it look like a standard hack with altered graphics and music. And there's just too many of those.

There's a speedrun on this year's SGDQ that shows a number of glitches e.g. relating to enemy spawns and infinite combos. If these glitches were fixed in the september patch, that would be a good reason not to use that. The run uses the character Blaze, but forum debate suggests Cherry is slightly faster. Shiva is even faster than that, but that character requires several playthroughs to unlock, so probably not an option. This is interesting because TASes of earlier games in the series use the slow heavy-hitter character (Max and Zan, this game's equivalent is Floyd). Anyway I'd love to see this as well.

Awesome work, well done! I suppose you could ask a judge if somebody else could make the submission for you; it would be straightforward to put the text in a PM and have somebody else copy/paste it into the submission framework. I'm happy to do that for you if you want, but best check a mod first.

Yogho! Yogho!, a dutch game that i never heard of, and it is beautiful!
Yogho Yogho was a yoghurt-based fruit-flavored drink known for its bizarre non-sequitor commercials with earworm-level catchy tunes. "An acorn drops from the tree! It looks like your uncle! Drink yogho!" https://web.archive.org/web/20100304205953/http://www.yoghoyogho.nl/ And yes, the game is very good; would love to see a TAS.

I used to play a different platform version of this game, and must say the Gameboy port looks pretty bad. It does have the same catchy music, that's a plus. I appreciate all the glitches used, they look really fun. But overall I find this less entertaining than the existing Genesis run, which is in the vault. So voting no on entertainment; this is also vault material to me.

It is; I just can't stand games that use a YAH! voice effect all the time.

Thanks for posting! I actually know this game pretty well (albeit from decades ago) so it's interesting to see it being picked apart like that!

Yay! That's the version I was hoping for when this site got its first HERO run. Plus I always like being able to compare various ports of a game. Yes vote!

Go for it! This game is a milestone in PC video game development, and its DOS version deserves more attention. (its porting-disaster NES version does not; unfortunately that's all people talk about)

No comment on the grassini/spikestuff conflict (konflikt?) but this just is too repetitive to be entertaining. No vote.

In my opinion, (1) I don't think this is a good reason to use a mod. What actually happens is that on the very last level of the game, at the very end, you get placed in a damaging trap; and the episode ends on a sequel hook once you're almost dead. I suggest you stop input before that happens, and treat it as an unavoidable part of the end of the game. (2) I see no problem with using invulnerability powerups in a no-damage run. You're not taking damage, that's what the powerup is for. (3) I'd vote for it, yes.
