What's your graphics card? Have you updated your drivers? old graphics cards will not be able to cope with some of the advanced technologies many plugins use.

Or something else like a router or ISP is corrupting something. If you have DMZ enabled on your router, try disabling it.

Is there some place documenting exactly how to not make these sorts of complicating errors when making an N64 TAS? I skimmed through the FAQ and found nothing of particular interest on the subject. Perhaps I'm not looking in the correct spot? Basically what I'm saying is if I were doing an N64 TAS, which I may well be doing in the future, what things should I look out for to make your life easier. Feel free to link me to this information if it is hiding from me somewhere.
Use a plugin that renders the game properly. If the game looks wrong, try another plugin. The framebuffer might also need enabling. This is significant in OoT but not all games use it.

There are several viruses that do this. Sometimes they append themselves to exes so they copy themselves to other exes before running the program, sometimes they just do the former part and skip the latter. Sometimes they are supposed to do both but for one reason or another fail. I only mention this because I have had such a virus in the past.

From my experience with Supercard DS ONE: 1) Mine and my friends work fine. Haven't had any problems with reliability. 2) Yes, it does this. 3) No, it doesn't do this. Supercard Lite is required. I explained the reason for this on IRC so I won't say it again here.. 4) I have a MD emulator. It works almost full speed :) 5) Supercard has one save-state slot. No slowdown though. Cheats and walkthrough access are also available. 6) I haven't tried movies, but pictures and music are viewable/playable using its OS, Moonshell.

OK, I've decided to release an old WIP . It has since been redone from scratch twice and been improved by about 7 seconds, and that's not even taken into account the time saved by the reduced pause screen delay. SL has decided to focus his efforts on Majora's Mask instead, while I've teamed up with Bloob on the new any%. We've put a lot of effort into the run so far, approxiamatly 78k+ re-records with less than 10 mins of movie length. Unfortunately, a soft reset isn't yet available for Mupen64Plus. With little to no indication from the development team as to when it will be implemented. So that will play a heavy factor as to when the run will be finished. EDIT: Now with new shinier link
I implore you, please make your runs with framebuffer enabled in your video plugin. You're using the wrong settings and it's meaning that a few things are being emulated incorrectly. Why play the game using incorrect emulation settings when it should be set to something else? There should be a site rule against this.

Did this happen recently? May I ask what kind of job you're going for? Does administrating TASVideos really take up that much of your spare time? Pry-tastic.

Your best bet might be something like Bisqwit's tile tracker. The screen on an NES is either 256x512 or 512x256 -- and most of the time, the amount of screen drawn is just enough. i.e., there's no easy way to do it, and things like sprites would likely phase in and out of existance at the edges of the "normal" border.
Indeed. Ps. It is supposed to be 16/9, not 16/10. :)
Actually, alot of monitors now use 16/10 as an aspect ratio. 1680x1050 is a common example of a 16/10 widescreen resolution used (both mine and my housemate's monitor uses it)

that mkv
Since Matroska is an open format, so anyone can get a player (like VLC) that plays mkvs, can't that be the video format used? The avi container is outdated and only used because it's the lowest common denominator that works nearly everywhere, and also it's a Microsoft format.
I think you missed the point of my post. I wasn't condemning mkv by any means. I just mentioned it was an mkv. A few points:
 1. VLC isn't exactly the greatest program in the world (at least in my opinion) and not everyone wants to use it.
 2. Just because AVI is outdated doesn't mean it's a bad idea to use it. My understanding is that this site has always aimed for the best compatibility when it comes to making media files, and compression quality:size comes second. While mkv is great and all, you can't play it on alot of hardware media players yet, and even some software players commonly used need a splitter/demuxer before they can play it properly.
 3. So you're saying that if it wasn't a Microsoft format, it would be okay to use it? That's the stupidest thing I've heard in a while.
I'm aware of AVI's other downsides, and you'll notice that when any of them are significant to affect the filesize of the finished encode significantly, I'll use mkv instead. Sorry for going somewhat off-topic.

I suppose LoZ:OoT is the king of this type of game. (How many months has the newest submission been sitting on the submission queue now, and how many posts have been made to its submission thread?) Super Metroid also seems to frequently draw heated controversy onto itself.
OoT has been accepted. The problem is that it was made with a plugin/plugin settings that cause the framebuffer to be unemulated. When framebuffer emulation is used (which makes the game look its best) the movie desyncs whenever the framebuffer is written to (or read, or both). As such, none of the current publishers want to encode it because it'll look like crap, and we feel the run deserves more than that despite it's not-so-great settings. bkDJ was working on an avi that splices all the good parts in from different plugins in order to acheive maximum quality, along with a chapter system that allows you to skip all of the cutscenes. Such a task is huge though and only a priliminary encode was made. After seeing it I feel publishing anything less than the quality that was in that mkv would be silly.

The only significant new thing is that movie screenshots can be annotated with a description, explaining what happens in the screenshot. This will be used as a caption to wherever the screenshot is used to decorate text. EDIT: Actually, this part I already decided to publish, so editors can start adding descriptions to screenshots… They are shown only at NewMovies.html for now.
How can we add descriptions to existing screenshots? Do we have to replace the old files with new files to add descriptions?
I'd hold off before you start trying to replace every screenshot on the site and wait for the functionality to change just the caption to be added.

Actually, I distinctly remember the upgrade from 98 to XP was more of an issue, since everything was moved to the NT stream of Windows. I recall many issues with drivers and programs acting very strangely. A similar thing happened, but with different reasons; alot of people were moving to 64-bit which Vista required signed drivers at the kernel level. There is also the problem of UAC causing apps to freak out when they didn't have the high permissions they had expected. Also, 32-bit drivers can't be used on 64-bit Vista as far as I know..

Christ, you're all so unbelievably biased. It's a pre-alpha. Give them a damn break before your start your "same as Vista" and "slower than Vista" witch-hunts.

I delete the folders: PROGRAM FILES, WINDOWS and everything inside DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS backing up the users' DESKTOP and MY DOCUMENTS. I also delete everything scattered in the C: drive. You need to delete the SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION folder, but it has some NTFS PERMISSIONS set, so you'll need to take ownership (in FOLDER OPTIONS, disable SIMPLE FILE SHARING, then go to the properties of the folder, security tab, advanced, ownership.
So basically, backup My Documents and use format c: ? Going on a deleting spree isn't exactly the most efficient way. Besides, that won't be necessary if it's a chipset problem. Of course, the manufacturer of the laptop SHOULD provide drivers on their website... whether they have kept them up to date or not is another matter.

Logic flaw there. Yes or no is an opinion. You say no opinions. Therefore if someone says yes or no, they are violating the rules. Yet, if they say something else, they haven't said yes or no, so they're still not following the rules. As such, your rules are null and void. Sorry, better luck next time.
