Alright, I think I'm going to write a patched Mupen64 for Windows that fixes the pause bug, but someone will have to compile it. Does this work for you guys? (This will not be Mupen64Plus)
Is there a link to this mythical mupen64 build?

Then make an arbitrary definition/category that the majority agrees on, with clear reasoning. 'Simple'.

I'm not sure why this is important apart from comparing to non-assisted runs (which is pretty hard to do anyway)...

but was also the minimum in this game for so long that most people are more familiar with 16 star completion than 1 or 0 star completion
Familiarity is grounds for a standard? Don't you want to show more of the game off without making the run too long? I'm not seeing any real reasons other than "we've been doing it for a while now but only because of ignorance, so we might as well continue".

How exactly is it possible for the motor to reverse direction like that without breaking things through stress and friction?

Until when? That was my point. All it really shows now is the fastest way to get 16 stars. While it does so most excellently, why not watch a 70-star or 120-star run? Sure they are long, but in that case why limit it to 16 stars anymore? why not 20/30/40? those are pretty short.

Just watched the encode (thanks bkDJ). I especially liked the way you got the nessy creature star. Pretty nice run in general. I really don't like the idea of putting it as a link on the 0-star movie page permenently by the way.

NO. My reasoning is almost identical to moozooh's. The logic is simple; let one suboptimal run through, more will follow. "Oh, this isn't THAT optimal, so I might as well make another run thats not as optimal for this game/<other>" I understand and accept the need for a new run. I only hope the creators of the new run (Swordless? AKA? Someone else?) can accept this and do us all a favour by keeping it as a primary project and trying not to sway too much by looking at other projects :)

I don't see any problem with modifing RAM addresses in a game as 10's of us have been able to play back the .vbm and verified its legit
Theres no doubt it's legit, only it directly resets the hardware to cause the softwate to be interrupted during it's save routine. I'm getting the impression thats the controversial part of this run.

Can you explain to these outsiders how this movie isn't cheating? :) Warning! The previous sentence could be seen as an act of trolling!
AKA wrote:
It doesn't make it worse than movies on the site which abuse more visual glitches e.g. *wall zipping and clipping glitches
Depends on your definition of 'worse'. The primary difference is those runs don't use unintended activity of anything but the controller, whereas this run uses a hard reset as well.

I would also say it was an arbitary decision to keep the Green run as well, and will once again build up problems in the future. Creating either impossible or very difficult situations and will likely just enforce the hypocrisy on this site.
I actually agree on this... to a certain extent. This apparently can be done on every 1st gen Pokemon game, so why not either move stuff to the concept runs section or clear up the categories a bit?
AKA wrote:
* Don't try to mention that wall zipping isn't technicaly a glitch
Wall zipping isn't technically a glitch. It's a feature to avoid getting jammed in walls. The important thing is that it can be abused.

Apologies. Next time I should comment AFTER I see the problem and not assume :) Thats a bug I haven't seen before on my end. Looks like it might be related to the position of Mupen, but I can't say for sure. Maybe graphics drivers need updating or something? As for using glN64, this works well because Aero is rendered using Direct3D, so if you use an OpenGL plugin the two shouldn't conflict. Then again, using a Direct3D plugin shouldn't conflict either but it seems to anyway. Personally for anyone stumbling in on this topic I'd recommend trying an OpenGL plugin and see if it solves your problems before posting here.

I know this isn't really that relevant, but if, in theory, there were a way to get into Level Select without altering the ROM in any way (ie, no GameShark or anything like that; maybe just certain button presses or something....in theory), and use it to go directly to BitS, would that count as a valid way of beating the game on this site?
That sounds an awful lot like a level select code method, which of course isn't allowed. Even some sort of way into the level select through non-conventional means seems a bit dicey. I think executing parts of level select code would be fine though.

Interesting stuff. Very nice to know that the concept is there at the very least. Any ideas for the method of execution? :)

Why would the programmers do that? Any decent programmer would assign the two keys with seperate variables.
Any decent programmer would write only what needs to be written if there is only one way things should happen. Case: Mario walks into the upstairs key door. Single variable.
switch ( gotKeys ) {

case 0 :
          doorText("You need a key to open this door...");
          break;
case 1 :
          doorText("This key doesn't fit. Perhaps it's for the basement door?");
          break;
case 2 :
          openKeyDoor();
          break;
}
Now with two variables, unless theres something in C I'm unaware of, you would need to check both variables in an assortment of if statements. This seems a bit inefficient considering theres only two keys and only 3 states a single variable would have (along with the fact you can only get the keys in a certain order). That said, it's entirely possible that it is coded with two variables just incase the level designers decided that they wanted a choice in which door you could go through first.

Hmm... Try opening and resaving the AVI in VirtualDub (using direct stream copy on both audio and video) and see if that fixes it.

Yeah, during the writing of that post I forgot about the mupen+Aero bug. I think this is a problem with mupen, not Vista, but I guess I don't know enough about the problem to know for sure.

was a fastest completion is the key thing to note here. While I would disagree with 16-star category on the site, I'm almost curious how optimized things can be. How more optimized could the 16-star have been if the basement BLJ wasn't found? Where would the acheived perfection through 16 stars be? While it seems I may never get these answers since all work on 16-star has been abandoned, it's still something thats interesting to consider.

emphasis added. I've always been under the impression that it's up to Judges to work out whether the run follows the rules of the site, and the public to tell the judges if the run was enjoyable or not. While a fair few people have said they enjoyed the run, they either water it down to a meh or go as far as no as if they're saying "its a good run but keep it off my internetz!". Seriously, you either enjoyed it or you didn't..

I proofread everything I write on this forum before I post it. I correct spellings, reword sentences and occasionally delete parts altogether that I find redundant. This takes around 10-60 seconds, which is generally around 10% of the time it takes to post. I am a native English speaker. I value the ability for people to understand me (because gibberish on forums never did anyone any good). What's so hard about the above? I like short sentences.

As you wish. Guys: Donkey Kong - I felt my list needed a lovable big dumb brute. Phoenix Wright - A somewhat rediculous concept of a lawyer that never loses. I don't know what else to say. Gordon Freeman - A scientist saving the world. With a crowbar. What's not to like? Captain Falcon - Show us your moves! I just find him somewhat silly and enjoyable to play as. Girls: Midna - A dark character but can be kind or caring. The video gaming world needs more of these kinds of characters. Midori - From GH3 and has no personality whatsoever, her out-of-place-ness makes me laugh. Samus - There are very few characters that are female, attractive and kick ass. Samus is notable that, while being attractive was not officially added until later, shes the pioneer of this concept. Debatable: Tails - The faithful companion that you either love, or love to hate. Always there when you need fodder to launch at a boss, yet always comes back for more. In some forms he is borderline invincible (spikes? death to Sonic. Tails + spikes? BRING IT ON).

In SSBM, I played as one of two people; Captain Falcon, or Ganondorf. I refuse to believe that the characters I'm a master at are complete fodder in Brawl.
