I use Avast. Any "nags" can be turned off. Low memory and cpu footprint too.

I've had this problem twice in the past two days, though I've gone through so many plugins I've forgotten which one it was. Which video plugin is causing this for you (or is it all of them)?

Hi there. Due to the current screenshot having jagged edges (though less than some of the other screenshots did) I've made a replacement screenshot of the same frame. Old Image: New Image: The new image's filesize is smaller than the current, and is slightly clearer too (bottom left where the boxes meet, watch face, Bond's hand etc.)

Since the current screenshot appears to be from adelikat's old submission and somewhat ridden with JPEG artifacts, I decided to update it with an alternative, cleaner image. Old Image: New Image: Unfortunately, I could not get the image to be a similar filesize, but the difference is not too bad considering the improvement.

Made a new screenshot of the same frame to replace the current jagged one. Old Image: New Image: Filesize is also somewhat significantly smaller (amazing, eh?)

Since the current image for the published run is blurry and low quality, I've made an updated image of the same frame. Old image: New image: The newer image is slightly larger (the more vibrant colours and crisper edges did this), but I feel the increase in quality is worth it.

For some reason, the screenshot for this run is not only jagged and horrible, its also not actually in this version of the run. Finding it hard to find a good screenshot, I decided just to take a screenshot of a frame around about where the one used for the published run *should* be but isn't. Image is compressed and ready to replace the current one, also.

Lol I think AKA saying that my TASing isn't as polished as he and SL implies that I need polishing, which is helpful in this situation. He deserves that recognition and some more rightfully anyway so lets not worry about it haha
While I respect it may have had some helpful aspects to it, these seemed more indirect and could have been supplanted directly with something along the lines of "I would suggest that you go back and polish some parts such as <this> and <that>". Ego sucks, mmkay?

I'd also say that AKA's statement is correct despite being arrogant, both he and SL could have produced a faster .m64 if mimicking that movie, because they are both seasoned OoT TASers.
Irrelevant. He added redundant information to his post. If he had written "I'm surprised how optimized this is despite this being your first TAS" then it would have worked fine. Similarly, if he had written "I'm surprised how optimized this is." It would have been okay too. Its the fact that he specifically decided to mention his superiority that bothers me.

Mupen runs great but everytime I record an avi and replay it, it just records the sound and no video. Is there a way to fix this?
I have Vista and I had this same problem.. right-click on your Mupen64.exe and click properties. Go to the compatibility tab and check the box "Disable desktop composition". Each time you open and close Mupen64 it should blacken your desktop for a second and that's how you know it's checked.
Just for further information, this exact solution USED to be in a stickied post in General. Upthorn provided a valid reason for it to remain, looks like he wasn't heard. For some reason I didn't link it here after I made it (perhaps I helped Agent007 on IRC instead): Post is available here.

Record using x264 on the default properties in 320 x ?? resolution and it should work perfectly fine with sound and everything. For a more compressed file size you'd have to ask someone else :(
If you're just going to encode generally and not for published runs on the site, using VirtualDub and x264vfw will work nicely. Bear in mind x264vfw is unsupported officially, and can be buggy (if you use B-frames, be sure to turn "VD Hack" in its options when encoding inside VirtualDub, and to turn it OFF when encoding the run from the source emulator.)

Also make sure you are using VLC media player or Quicktime. Windows Media Player for me tends to just play the sound.
This is likely because you don't have the required codec. x264vfw has a decoder built in also, or you can use FFDShow.

Requesting a new tag, [ego][/ego] to be made for certain members of this forum. Everyone is capable of TASing. He knows where the optimization mistakes are. He just chose not to correct them. Oh, and it's "SL and I". Never put yourself first. Okay, I'm done.

Syncs with Direct64 plugin for those with glN64 problems. Be sure to enable mempack in the TAS plugin (though how it got enabled by the Boobiez I don't know). Personally, I'm not 100% on the goals for this run other than the somewhat arbitrary goal of "no major skips", so I'll just comment on the technical aspects for now. Looking pretty tight and refined so far. I was initially expecting clearly visible problems after you mentioned it was your first TAS and there were a few, but on playback I was pleasantly suprised :) TASed like a pro so far. Keep up the good work! I get the impression future OoT runs are going to require muted sound.... *sigh*

I hate the trials, but not doing them would be too arbitrary for my liking (though you said you weren't too bothered if it was submitted to the site or not) Then again, I always have the tab button to skip over that bit, which is a far better scenario than disappointing those that want to watch the trials but you haven't done them.

Actually if you choose the "Pause at frame" option, start fast-forwarding with TAB, and while you're holding TAB click outside the Mupen window, it'll keep fast-forwarding and you're free to do whatever you want.
what do you prefer? waiting half an hour to get to that point while mupen eats cpu, or skipping right to that point/getting there much faster without eating cpu? damn it, you guys sure like arguing. you know that a feature like that would be useful.
Actually, I'm trying to give you an alternative purely because of the fact that noone's working on Mupen64 and noone has shown interest in doing so. It's kinda silly to request features for a project with no maintainer. I know very well that some of the features mentioned would be useful (most notably, I would be whining for savestate stability and proper resetting myself).

Savestates? I'm not sure why you're wanting to fast forward.

I'm particularly good at any FPSes that have an added element of tactics or strategy. I'm also pretty good at Assassin's Creed. I would give some sort of top 10, but I can't really think of any particular games specifically.

I, for one, welcome our new self-improving TASers. The fact that this is an improvement to a run he's already submitted is enough for me to show optimism on the matter (more than most newcomers who submit here...) rather than negativity and hostility towards him. Perhaps you guys should be more welcoming and supportive of such people. Zowayix: If you intend on optimizing further, I highly recommend reading the Super Mario Bros Tricks page. If you're aiming for speed (the only thing that'll likely have a hope in hell of getting published... *sigh*) then the tricks there will be invaluble. On the other hand, if you go for an Air-like demonstration, then only optimize those bits that should be fast (like overworld and getting to interesting places), and be sure to demonstrate as much as possible of different levels / previously unused enemies. While I somehow doubt the run would be published either way (judging rules sure are strict these days), I'm sure it will entertain a fair few people on the "lets see you play something" thread, so be sure to post there at least if you haven't done already.

I was supposed to reply to this when the problem first arose. Obviously my attention was on a more pressing issue. Oh well. It is important to note that the above desync is likely not a problem with the input plugin. The problem is instead likely to be the video plugin (I know, that may be hard for you to believe but it is the truth). Please ensure you are using the same video plugin as that which the TAS was made with. This problem only occurs with newer/more complex games.

No. Heres why:
  • Why are you in such a rush to submit this. You say you messed up on the overworld. Thats fair enough, but why did you not fix this? You clearly have the concept of re-records grasped, so it puzzles me why you would not make sure its perfect before you continued..
  • I do not think such a showcase is TAS-worthy. No fault of your own, just that it doesn't really add much to the SMB3 experience (Mario Adventure is a good example of a hack that adds alot). As such this doesn't seem like an interesting enough hack in my opinion.
  • It's more of a demonstration than a speed run. While this works for Air, it doesn't really seem to work for this run. As mentioned above, this would be better suited for the "let's see you play something" topic, so be sure to post it there at the very least.
Hope the negative feedback hasn't put you off TASing in the future.

Jump to frame is sort of the same as this: as for turbo, try the TAB key. If that does nothing, turn off "Sync game to Audio" in your Audio plugin settings.
