I was shocked when I saw that only 2 N64 movies were published this year, with one them being questionable (meaning it's clearly obvious what to vote for). At least next year, it will be a bumber year for N64 submissions. We should at the minimal see MM, OoT*2, SM64*2 and Mystical Ninja.
do you mean a better year or a bummer year? im kind of confused.
Bumper. As in, a bumper crop.

I would really like to hear how some of these glitches are performed. Some of them are quite baffling.

This is amazing. I have to say that so far this is the most entertaining movie of 2010, and even this decade. Yes vote.

You're voting no because your crappy usage of noscript produced a large dialog box for an encode that has nothing to do with the run itself? If you're being serious, I don't think you should be allowed voting privilages. Or breathing privilages. Or just privilages in general.

Good TAS but sorry I can see a few frames of improvement here and there, so voting meh.

This is just my opinion, but I think someone a long time ago said that TASVideos is about publishing TAS entertainment, or something to that effect. Is this movie not entertaining to watch? A movie is better than no movie. The only circumstances where I think it is reasonable to reject a movie for it lacks the use of a known trick but is still quite entertaining, is if A) it harms the entertainment greatly (such as failing to run, -cough-), or B) a replacement movie is not too big effort to create (i.e. it could be expected to be finished in another week).
I agree completely with this. As such I also agree with Baxter. I'd also like to add my personal feelings on the matter of rejecting an improvement to a published movie. TASvideos strives on improvement and obsoletion in order to better itself. The fact that we have entertaining, faster runs being rejected because improvements may or may not be possible is a sad state of affairs, particularly if it results in leaving a much slower run up. That said, I do disagree with publishing submissions that are clearly unoptimized all over..

I've added a sub-guideline to "If you're unsure, ask". This is because I feel that too many of the threads started have a vague title; one that either gives no information on the question at hand or provides too little to make a future search on the matter provide a noticable result. As always, any requests for guidelines and/or amendments can be discussed here.

I would have thought that the file's timestamp for 'date created' or 'last modified' would have done that job. I do agree that input files should follow the same schema as the media files though.

How about just going for a set crf? Does a certain crf have the same quality for every encode?

I think Aktan is setting the perfect standard for encodes, reasonably small (Usually inside a 6:1 ratio) while maintaining 'perfect' quality... not that his compatibility is ideal sometimes.
So you're saying that the perfect standard is to have a less-than-ideal compatibility?

Speaking of YouTube, now that most (all?) videos can be watched online, is this as much of an issue as it used to be?
Yes. However, I believe that now that we have all our runs available for online-viewing, the sole usage of the downloadable media file should be for a high quality encode (though not necessarily lossless).

As I was one of those who suggested MP4 instead of MKV, let me provide the rationale. MP4 advantages (vs. MKV): - much better hardware compatibility, even if not complying to standard profiles. MP4 disadvantages (vs. MKV): - no Vorbis support (negligible, as HE-AAC does the job at least as well); - marginally higher overhead (absolutely negligible); - no soft subtitle streams (can be worked around by providing an MKV instead of or as an addition).
Actually Vorbis is supported in MP4 according to a container comparison on wikipedia. But yeah. My feelings on the matter are:
  • Use mp4, unless mkv is needed for more advanced functionality.
  • Use options in x264 that have been tried and tested.
  • Aim for maximum compatibility.

How come every time I try to watch this on Snes9x the emu crashes? I was able to watch it thanks to the encode
Same for me... playing this smv completely messes up my snes9x :S
Turn of "Sync Samples With Sound CPU", that might fix it. My emulator crashes if I have it on as well, I think it happens if you have a CPU with more than one core.
That worked for me. It doesn't have to deal with CPU Cores, unless the Intel ATOM has more then one core, which I doubt. I loved the boo fight the most. Nice alternate gaming reference at the end! Only thing I didn't like was the water level twitching, but at least it was only 2 levels...and not every single level. Voting YES. BTW, whoever publishes this should make a note about this in the publication, or somebody should edit the SMV to disable that option, as long as it doesn't desync the run.
I don't think this is the right solution. IMO the better way is just set the affinity to one CPU.
The issue doesn't just involve multi-core users. Look above. Someone with an Intel Atom processor has the same problem, and that's single core.

I bring this up not because it's a fantastic, ground-breaking idea, but because I noticed that Bluetoaster is out of date. I'm not blaming the maintainer of that page for not keeping it up to date, since that is mostly a machine's job, and IIRC, that site was created before all the emulators went into code repositories, so its purpose is also more or less obviated now.
I stopped updating bluetoaster for a number of reasons:
  1. I had(have) other projects to be worked on
  2. Originally there was only random mirrors on places like mediafire; ad-ridden sites that can't be relied on. Once all the emulators got google code pages, the need for a central emulator repository was needed less.
  3. I've run out of space on my external server where the site is hosted, and I don't really have the funds to upgrade my package :(
That said, I'm happy to add emulators that are sent to me in private message (though sometimes I forget, in which case pester me :D ). It's still an ideal place to have archived versions of emulators which can be good for reference, research and playing back old movies.

This is why I love TASes. And nitsuja. TASes and nitsuja. :) Just out of interest, have you found anything interesting with the boss(es)? Or have you been focusing on Act 1 and 2? Edit: I suppose I should ask: with this glitch is it possible to underflow sonic's position and wrap around the level (a la sonic 3 & knuckles)?

Finally, the site was plagued with 100 fold increase in intentionally crappy submissions after his banning; it was obvious the site was getting trolled, and hard. The trolling came to a nearly complete stop.
Not quite 'finally'. After the above happened, a sudden surge of account names containing hatred and profanity towards adelikat appeared. After a week or so of acounts being created and deleted, I managed to add a suitably large amount of account name filters to prevent this. I assume since the name 'adelikat' could no longer accurately be produced, he simply gave up :)

To be honest, those names are terrible. They may be assembly standard, but just suck for anything meant to be read by a human rather than a machine.
I completely agree. Basic English that many will understand is far better than boolean logic terms. Not everyone who uses emulators are computer scientists/coders/mathematicians. I have no objection with the boolean logic term in brackets alongside the english meaning, however. Dammit, my typo of the word 'brackets' is now in 2 quotes :(

Hmm, what's wrong with stitching them together at the container level? For some longer runs, I usually do split the movie in half to max out both cores and then combine them. If chosen at the right points like a scene change, the output is usually very close to not splitting at all.
Some people like to demux or transcode these things for use on another device. I am also unsure how some of the streaming sites react to multiple chunks (though I haven't tried). I also had problems where with a large number of chunks, the audio desynced, though I'm not sure why. Regardless, I've put the project on hold and will resume it at a later date (I have a programming to-do list at the moment) One thing that made me lose interest is the lack of a working h264 encoder for the PS3. At the risk of derailing this thread further, if anyone knows of one, let me know :)

I believe a better word would be 'negate'. 'button-press-eraser', 'erase by press' or 'subtract(er)' are also suggestions.

But I am sure Grunt, Aktan, Raiscan and I (Along with other active encoders) only have one computer for encoding with, otherwise I would have run this game through a more advanced script.
I have 4 Computers at my disposal, and I've been trying to work on a distributed system in which chunks of the capture are sent to each of them to encode. I had only mild success, the biggest hindrance being I couldn't work out a good way to stitch them together without doing it at the container level (i.e, having 20 or so different chunks of the movie playing one after another).

Not when the new encode is currently encoding.
If you're doing an encode that's 'publication underway' then there's no rush; it's not on the main site/front page yet so it'll be fine. On the other hand, if there is a published movie that has a problematic/incorrect encode then it is a big problem; This is something that a large number of people are going to download and might not even notice the problem. If you don't want to waste your time by cancelling another encode, you can go into task manager and set its (x264's) priority to 'idle'. Then when you start a new instance of x264 the other one will just sit there. I'll provide a picture later when I'm on a Windows PC.

Dear Bisqwit, Do you believe that TASVideos (or NESVideos) has had a particular peak (i.e, where the site was/is at it's prime and everything in the community is well)? If so, when do you believe that was?
