Given the same overworld, except that level locations can switch with other level locations, and non-dungeon underworld places (like shops, swords, and secrets to everybody) could switch with any other. But keeping the rest of the game the same (cost of items, strength of sword, etc.), how could you place the locations so as to maximize the time of a perfect run? That is, given a perfect player, what configuration is most damning for him?

Like all great technology, this was inspired to advance pornography. Wouldn't this work. At time t, take a screenshot of the frame, and give it a number based on some formula, perhaps based on color count and such. Then, at t+1 do the same thing, and compare the difference between the two frames. If they are close, group them together in the current animation. If they are far apart, a new gif sequence will be created. I imagine, then, if we were to apply this program to Mario 1, we would -- if my memory serves correctly -- get Gif 1: Title sequence. Gif 2: Black screen that shows number of lives. Gif 3: Level one part 1. Gif 4: A few frames of black Gif 5: Collecting coins under the tube Gif 6: Left of level 1. Gif 7: A few frames of black. Gif 8: The walking to the pipe. Gif 9: A few frames of black. Gif 10: Start of level 2. Or something like that. Look back off man. Anyway. The program could also be tuned to ignore trivialities, like the black wait screens between relevant sections. Or, just record every other, fifth, or 10th, or whateverith frame, if gif size is a concern of yours which it shouldn't be you cheap bastard. This could make it easier to a) illustrate tricks of specific parts of a tas without having to create the gif by hand, b) create a ton of gifs to spread on these forums and the intarwab, 3) provide another medium for viewers to watch TASs when d/ling via utorrent and d/ling an emu is not an option and they couldn't find it on Youtube or Google Video or whatever they're the same now or something. huh So. Get on that.

I saw this at eatthestate.org/06-14/LipetskStrikeat.htm which is a website campaign against politics since politics is evil and immoral. But also sites like news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3624887.stm thepigtownhorn.blogspot.com/2007/03/sweatshops-and-space-travel.html The website featured an IP tracker that tracks what IP you're on. Does anyone know a good one Alden?

Hey Bisqwit where do you see programming languages going in the upcoming decades. Do you think they should become better or worse? Why don't you design your own programming language, that's like, better than the current ones. And, you know, not worse then them? Answer my questions!

I just got a new DVD burner and Vista. What software do you use/recommend to convert video files of many types and codecs to DVD format, and burns it? Is there a general utility like this for free?

I think the "post videos of you playing stuff," and "just be funny," threads are good starts. Any goons on these boards familiar with the concepts of the Lets Play forum? Can't make a WIP because my comp is fucked.

Not a joke. Just that I, rebellious by nature, wish to contribute liberal ideas to this community. I've been around here since the beginning. I detected particular peaks and slow periods. Perhaps I am wrong. I remember before there were SNES re-recording emulators. And how much activity there was once one was made. But the systems for which re-recording ought be made (generally) are. Newer systems generally have very difficult to TAS games, or TASs that would really require a time commitment from the viewer. I advocate a sort of "challenges" or "highlight real" subforum to this community.

Playing Zelda 1 tonight, I realized that what initially attracted me to this site wasn't the concept of speed, but the entertaining nature of it. I have a "safe route" for playing Zelda 1, that has made the game too easy. So I decided to just play the game tonight, to have fun. And I came up with something that might hopefully spark activity of the game on TAS Videos. Rules: No game overs. Must keep wooden sword. No overworld hearts or potions. Must visit every room on every dungeon map. Must kill every bad guy whenever they are present in a dungeon room. The levels must be completed in order. The process of TASing Zelda 1 is Herculean because of the number of different level routes, warping options, upgrade choices, money, and shop visiting. Playing this way seems more natural, or more like someone who wasn't an expert of the game might play. (They don't know where overworld hearts or sword upgrades are, etc.) By taking away all the permutations of the game with these constraints, we have a game which is really more in the spirit of Zelda than our current TAS of it. And as the rules are specified, and the game is simpler, this should promote more competition in tas development.

Locking threads is fun. Really guys. Just put a poll. Let democracy decide. Who likes my threads, and votes it be reopened even if its moved to a different forum. This is a forum mutiny.

Unrelated to 3D Zelda but I didn't think it warranted a new thread... Shouldn't there be an algorithm for generating random Zelda 1 levels and an algorithm for solving random Zelda 1 levels? So as, one's screensaver could be a computer forming and beating Zelda levels.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGosenaH_8I I think it's a great idea. I'm thinking, there should be a way to write a program to do the total conversion for you, from the Zelda NES ROM, to a 3D version of Zelda based on some FPS engine. Even if you just replace keese with some bad guy from Half Life or Unreal Tournament or Serious Sam, or something. Thoughts?

Hey, that's my routine. I prefer taking showers in complete darkness but whatever floats your boat I guess.
I recently took a bath in complete darkness to try and trip like they say you do in sensory deprivation tanks. It didn't really work but I'm not opposed to trying again.
