I tried to play this movie with a bad ROM dump, and the backgrounds worked. So I guess all of us who had problems with not seeing backgrounds all have a bad ROM dump, even though the checksum matches. EDIT: After having watched this, I kinda liked it. The game itself looked about average, but all the glitching made it more entertaining. I think this run is publish-worthy. 6.6 in entertainment, 7.6 for quality from me.

I started watching this run this morning, and I have some questions, ones I couldn't find answers to in the submission text: 1. Why did you use version 0.98.12? Nostalgic reasons? :P It synchs with .28 and all, but .12 is still pretty obsolete in several fields. 2. All rooms have the exact same background for me, all red bricks. It looks like this in every room. The ROM checksum matches, and the movie synchs, it's just that the background looks like that the whole run. I tried playing this movie in different emulators, ranging from .12 to .28, but I get the same glitch. I even downloaded version 0.98.12 again, but I still get the same weird graphical bug. Any idea what might be wrong? I know the game isn't supposed to look like that. :) I'll hold my vote until I get an answer to number 2. Oh, and congratulations on your first TAS! :)

Very nice find indeed, this should save quite a lot of time. You are welcome to try and improve the run yourself, I have no plans on redoing it anytime soon. If you decide to give it a shot, I'll help out in any way I can. :) I dug up quite a few RAM addresses recently, and did some research on how randomness works in this game, so just throw me a PM if you want to look at what I got.

Nice, another Mega Man X TAS! Could you (or someone else for that matter) please provide an .avi or youtube video for us without the game ROM? I'll watch this as soon as one becomes available. :)

Hi, I've made a WIP of the first level. I'm 7 frames ahead of the published run after the first boss. I've also kept track of how many kills and collected orbs I have compared to the published run, and so far I've killed 9 more enemies and collected 12 more balls. Here's the .fcm (made with 0.98.28). I saved 1 frame on level 1-1 by getting maximal boosts from platforms, 4 frames by getting a better boost from the first platform on level 1-3, and 2 frames on 1-4 by jumping up the vertical section faster. Also, I've analyzed how the trick Diman found works. It's possible to make a very high jump in mid-air when the value of RAM address 00E5 is less than 7. This only happens at the beginning of a level. The link to Diman's latest WIP is dead, so I don't know if that WIP is any faster than me or Baxter. Onwards to level 2!

I'd be pretty interested in this, it's been a while since I last played through it though. How long do you think the run will be? (if that's not a secret)

The rules say that you should really use the U version unless there's a good reason not to. With that said, good luck, and welcome to the forums! :)

Will upload to youtube if someone makes an AVI encode. VirtualDub does not like MKV's for some reason.
Can you upload this to youtube even though it's over 10 minutes long? Or will you upload it in two parts or something?

Awesome! That brought back memories. What I would love is an encode with all the downtimes (load screens, dialogue, etc.) cut out, to maximize the action intensity (there were quite a lot of these in the run, of course not a fault of yours). Well, I really enjoyed watching this, so keep these MMX PSX TASes coming!

Yeah, this would be sweet. I've been thinking some about this too, in particular for a program that runs a sequence of keyboard inputs on a PC, as this would open up a door to everything from the latest PC games to Flash games. I'm not a programmer, but I don't think that it would be very hard to make a program that runs a given sequence of input at the press of a button (I'm thinking the way the macro input tool works for SNES9X). In the best case scenario, this program would be able to record mouse input too. :)

Why does NesVideoAgent report this movie to be 10:16.98? The submitted .fm2 is 37080 frames long, which is 37080/60 = 618 seconds, exactly 10min 18 seconds. Where did this 1.02 second difference come from?

Well, once you are done finding small improvements, I say submit. I'd rather have the 40 frames faster version represented on the site. And we have certainly published smaller improvements (*cough* circus charlie). And it is not like it is going to clog up the submission queue, we only have 4-5 submissions right now.
Yeah, you're probably right. I've spent some more time searching for more improvements, but couldn't find any. I'll go ahead and submit this as it is!

I works fine now. I compared your WIP to Shinryuu's new WIP, and if I timed correctly, you are 33 frames ahead when you reach the boss! (in your WIP, the last gate closes on frame 5490, and in Shinryuu's WIP on frame 5523.) Now THAT's impressive. Great job indeed.

Very good game choise, and surprisingly short for a PSX TAS. It kept me entertained the whole time. 7.8/7.6. Great job.

There is another Deja Vu thread here, (ironically, with the exact same name), so I'm not sure which one to post in. Anyway, I've been looking over the published run some, and managed to find some minor improvements. I improved the run by 40 frames (0,67 sec), which I don't think warrants for a submission, but if anyone's interested, you can check it out. The improvements are: (~f means "around frame", so ~f9500 means that the improvement took place around frame 9500 in the run) ~f9500: After exiting the building, go to outside the bar using top of picture instead of minimap - saves 4f ~f12000: SPEAK to the cab-driver by doing to top of screen first, saves 9f ~f23000: putting MEDICINE1 in capsule outside my office instead of inside doctor's room, saves 7f ~f25000: move more to the right on the minimap, in order to get to next minimap dot faster. Saves 5f ~f31000: SPEAK to the cab-driver by doing to top of screen first, saves 9f ~f36000: Move more to the right on minimap while moving towards police station, to reach police doors faster, saves 6 frames. Here's the run. Recorded with 0.98.28. The rerecord count isn't accurate due to a lot of movie editing. EDIT: Make that 44 frames faster. I now waste less time manipulating luck around frame 35100, saving another 4 frames. Movie. EDIT2: 45 frames now. I shaved off another frame from the luck manipulation. This movie is now exactly 10min 18sec, on the frame, which is pretty cool. Movie.

The link and everything works, but you must have uploaded the wrong file... The file size for your .fcm is 0 bytes, so there's no data at all on it. So make sure you've found the correct movie-file (play it in the emulator before uploading it to make sure that it works), and then upload it and provide a link again.

Nice! Making this TAS in just one night is very impressive, but I guess you know the game inside out. :) 7.6/8.4 from me.

Check your internet browser if you've stored the link to the movie. Otherwise you might want to try to upload the movie again. After you've uploaded the movie, the text "Your file can be accessed using (link to moviefile), but what comes after the /info// is free to be changed (but keep the same extension)." will appear at the bottom of the page. It should look something like this, to be clear. Now copy the link to the movie (the text in purple, in my picture) and post the link in your forum post. So in my case, I write: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1352612088/megaman6wip.fcm So, do the same with your movie, and everyone will be able to watch it!

I didn't know that there were competition levels in S3, so this is the first time I've seen them. Here are my thoughts on the TAS: Although the run itself was mostly dashing, it was short and the levels were varying enough to keep me entertained. I'm not a big Sonic-fan, but I think a competition levels TAS might be a good addition to this site. One thing that bothered me a little was that there were only stuff happening on half the screen, but of course that's just the way these levels work. Oh well. In terms of quality, not having played much Sonic but watched a whole lot of TASes, I thought this held good quality overall (I couldn't spot any mistakes in the run). It's probably not as optimized as the other Sonic runs on this site, but still pretty optimized. Hopefully those guys at Sonic center can share some of their strategies, if any of those faster times were with Sonic. Anyway, I vote 7.2 for entertainment (as I said, I'm not a big Sonic fan), and abstain for techinical.

Thanks, it looked good. I have to agree that this movie was hilarious! Overall not one of the best TASes, but in terms of entertainment this was one of the best I've seen. I found myself laughing through most of the movie. I can't believe the game accepted all those answers... The speed round went a little too fast for my taste, so yeah, either a Lua script or an encode that pauses at each question at the speed round would be nice. 9.2/abstained.

Yeah... I had a weird dream this night... adelikat was driving a car, and I was sitting next to the driver's seat. He then asked me to give him the Super Spy Hunter TAS. I pulled out a big metal plate, with a small TV screen on it, showing the SSH TAS. While showing it, I laughed "Why do you want to watch this, it's not very entertaining!". I noticed that he got a little offended, so I quickly said "Eeh, but it is really optimized." He looked at it for a while and said "Hmm, you have to make it smaller" Suddenly, the metal plate had turned into a small piece of paper, still with a small TV screen on it, showing the SSH TAS. I folded the paper once, and put it away and we kept on driving.

Once I get back home to the UK, I will post my movie to see if you can gain anything from it.
Just bumping this thread to see if you're back to UK yet, it would be nice to see if your run is faster than mine before I continue with world 4. EDIT: Well, I couldn't resist TASing the first 9 levels of world 4. :) Some notes: 4-1: New strategy at the beginning of the stage. Saves 30f. 4-2: New strategy after killing first fire. Saves 12f. 4-6: New strategy. Saves 79f. Level 4-10 will require a huge amount of planning, but I think it has a lot of room for improvement over Ragowit's run. I'll see what I can come up with for this level, but it might take some time to come up with a fast enough strategy. Here's the WIP.

P.S.Also can anyone tell me the correct pronunciation of TAS? I always pronounced it tazz.
I pronounce it something like "tazz" too. However, when talking about TAS videos with someone, I say "tool-assisted speedrun" instead of TAS, because I know that if I just say TAS they'll just ask what a TAS is. But I guess the correct way is to pronounce each letter separately.
