What can I say...? I pretty much agree with Angerfist here. :) Yes vote, and this should get the obsoleted movie's star.

Could someone please tell me exactly where to find the fairy just before the last boss? I've been looking for it, but I can't find it... EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. :) EDIT 2: Okay, I'm having serious problems getting this fairy... and I mean serious. Normally I only have to try 5-10 times, entering the area at different frames, to make a fairy appear. This time I've entered the area about 300 different frames, if not more, and I still haven't gotten the fairy. It seems impossible, and if I still get no luck, I'm thinking about skipping this fairy and beat the boss without it... If this keeps up, it would waste around 2 seconds just to manipulate luck to get this fairy... :( Please, please, please, CtrlAltDestroy, if you have time, give it a try and see if you can get the fairy to spawn. I'll try some more too and see what I can accomplish. Oh, and if you don't remember, the fairy is just to the left of the window. Here's the WIP. EDIT 3: Okay, I'm done testing this for the moment... Still no luck at all. I'll wait and see if you can manipulate luck better than me at this place. I'll go play Final Fantasy 12 instead. :)

I know exactly what you mean. This happened to me all the time when I made the "Guerrilla War" movie. Well, not "all the time", but at least 200 times throughout the making of the movie. It seems like this is a problem that occurs on laggy parts - you mentioned it happened during lag, and for me... well, all of "Guerrilla War" is one big laggy mess. ;) I couldn't find an easy way to solve this, so here's what I did (this is just an example to Illustrate): 1. While recording the game freezes at frame 5000. The frame counter is still counting up, but the game is frozen and just one note is playing. 2. I stop the movie-recording, and replay it in "Read-only" mode. 3(optional). I load a savestate that's pretty close to the frame the game froze, say frame 4500 or so. If you don't have any you can just fast-forward. This step is just so you won't have to replay the entire movie. :) 4. When reaching frame 4990 or so, a few frames before the game crashed, i savestate to state 5. 5. Now, I stop the movie and replay it without "Read-only" and load state 5. So now I'm back into recording business (recording at frame 4990), without a crashed game. Usually the game doesn't crash this time when it reaches frame 5000. If it does, just redo all this again. I know what you think - this is tedious business. And I can only agree. It would be nice to know an easy solution to this problem.

I'm a little torn on this... This movie had some cool and well performed manoeuvres, and some surprising routes (Star world 3, Bowser Castle). But it was also quite repetitive, and a little too slow for my taste. I also agree on that it was a little too much jumping... Anyway, I'm giving this a "Meh". It was an OK movie, but nothing astounding.

Haha, nice find. :) This game seems to have a few moer bugs than I knew of. :P It's quite likely that I finish this movie tomorrow, or at least within a few days. Although I haven't said so straight out, I will put you as co-author of this run, CtrlAltDestroy. You've truly earned it, with all your findings and contributions to this run. After all, almost all of level 3 was played by you. :) I will write the necessary stuff (the things listed in the submission instructions) in the author's comments when submitting, but if you want to write your own section of the comments, you could post it here or send it to me in a PM.

Looks good. I worked some on this today, and I finished level 3. Here's the WIP. Some things to point out: *I tried to enter the door faster by killing the bird, but without luck. *It took me a whole 9 frames to manipulate luck to get the fairy to appear. This pained me, but there's nothing I can do about it... *I tried hard to reduce lag on this area. I think I managed pretty well, I tried several different approaches when encountering enemies. *The boss fight went well. There isn't much lag here, and I got him to be a lot to the left when hitting him. I gotta do the laundry now, but I'll see if I can do some work on level 4 later today. If I understood you right, the remaining levels are all up to me now. I'll post my progress here however, so you can enjoy the show, and point out things if you find any. :) Point of interest: We're now around 30 seconds ahead of the published movie. Again, this is compared with the .avi, but it's still a pretty big deal I think. So, we saved about 2 seconds on this level, even without Minnie's weapon. :) EDIT: I just finished level 4. I had some good luck on the boss manipulation - I only had to wait for 1 frame for him to throw the daggers the way I wanted him to. I lost about 20 frames or so on the boss, so it's still no huge amounts of time lost. All in all, level 4 went well. :) Here's the WIP.

I don't have much experience with TASing this, but I did some testing regarding speed with Toad, by looking at memory address 0028, and here's what I found out: *Normal running speed, without carrying anything is 2.25 pixels per frame. (henceforth called p/f) (movement pattern: 3-2-2-2 then repeats) *Running speed while carrying a ShyGuy is 35/13p/f = 2.6923...p/f. (movement pattern: 2-3-3-3-2-3-3-2-3-3-2-3-3 then repeats) *Running speed while carrying a POW is 43/16p/f= 2.6875p/f. (movement pattern: 2-3-3-2-3-3-2-3-3-2-3-3-2-3-3-3 then repeats) Conclusion: If I read the right memory address, It seems that running with a ShyGuy is actually a little faster, but not much at all as you can see. Could someone confirm this?

so this was done with no frame advance?
That's right. This movie was made before the "frame advance" feature was implemented in FCEU.

Regarding the name Baxter, the character "Bob Kelso" (the boss of the hospital) in the comedy-serie "Scrubs" has a dog named Baxter. :)

Let's see what Google can tell me... *There is a Randil James on IMDB, seems to be a director or something. *There's also some Randil Sal in Star Wars. He's a part of the Solo family! I think I saw some user named Randil in a forum about gardening, or something like that... I didn't find the link though. :P

*Bump* Have you had any more luck yet, CtrlAltDestroy? If you really can't shave off any more frames, you could post what you have and I'll continue from there. Saving 21 frames on that area is pretty good anyway, in my opinion. I'll be away for the weekend, but I have a school break for two weeks now, so I think I can do some work on this on the upcoming days now. Woohoo, my 800th post! :)

Wow, this was really impressive. Very smooth and fast run, and highly entertaining. This shows what TASes are all about, so I think this would be worthy of a star. :) One of the best TASes I've seen, I think. Big yes vote from me.

Umm, I have absolutely no idea how to play this game... I really can't figure it out. Can someone please tell me the controls and the goal of the game?

Wow, that is strange. If I understand correctly, whenever you get hit in the Winter area, you gain this invincibility animation for a few frames. During these frames enemies will die if they walk in to you. So instead of gaining the "you can walk through enemies for a few frames after getting hit" animation, you get the fairy effect for a few frames. In any case, a nice little glitch. Is this the case wherever you get hit in the Winter area? I'll be pretty busy today, so I don't think I can do any work on this until at least tomorrow. Were you able to improve the winter area (especially the bear fights) anything?

Aaaah, you fired at the bear before jumping over the hole! You sneaky bastard. ;) Manipulating the fairy's spawning location is usually pretty easy. I'll see what I can do about the winter level... The key would be to make the bears throw as few stones as possible, since it's that that cause all the lag... I think I'll do as I did now, do my best, post my progress, and see if you can improve it. :P EDIT: Okay, I've done the snow area now: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4623/spliced-ctrl-mickey.fcm I think it went well. Let me know if you manage to improve anything. :)

Any luck improving it further? By the way, it looks like the movie you linked to is wrong. You linked to my .fcm that beats whole level 3, going through the spring area.

Nice, thanks. I did the bear-fight, and I think it went pretty well. I'll post it so you can take a look at it, perhaps you can manipulate it further: Here's the WIP I use'd the pause-trick here, to manipulate let the bears movement. You'll also see that I end the fight while on the ground, making me fire at the door a little sooner, which is nice. :)

Thanks for the tips. Umm, I just found something pretty big... This is really awkward, but... Why are we playing the spring area? In our movie, we enter a door around frame 12800, leading to the spring area... But there is a door a but further up that goes directly to the autumn area, skipping the spring area (you'll see this in Fried's movie)... So we played an entire area too much. :D Well, at least this will cut off a lot of time. ;) Although it's necessary to play the spring level to get a fairy for the bears, it doesn't by far make up for the time spent running through the spring area. I'll have a new WIP up soon enough.

By the way, I found another fairy that can be used to instant-kill the level 3 boss. It's hidden in a flower.
Where is this flower? I've only found one fairy, but it's too close to the beginning of the area, so it flew away before I could reach the boss. Could you perhaps post an .fcm showing where to get this fairy you're speaking of? EDIT: Nevermind, I found it. Now I just need to manipulate luck to actually get it too. :P Oh, I managed to get the fairy in the snow area in a different place, allowing me to instant kill both groups of bears. You'll see what I mean when watching the WIP. EDIT: Replaced with a .fcm that beats whole level 3. Here's the WIP. And as usual, if you spot anything, let me know. :) But I'm quite satisfied with the result.

Level two is done now. There shouldn't be anything to comment on on this stage, but I'll post it anyway: Here's the WIP.

Okay, thanks. I've got the first level done now. There's not much to mention since the part after the boss is very straightforward. I gained a few frames here and there due to better movement, but I also lost a few frames due to bad luck. Please take a look at this movie and tell me what you think. If you give me green light, I'll carry on with level two. One thing that should be mentioned, you'll probably see that I stop for 4 frames around frame 6200 before entering the next screen, to manipulate luck. This bugged me, but couldn't be helped, those enemies were just too much in my way and needed to get moved. :) Here's the WIP. Enjoy!

I think I need your help on the boss, CtrlAltDestroy. :P I've been trying to pull off the leave-early trick, without any luck. I've come pretty close, but I can't make Minnie stop and jump straight up as you make her. How do you do that anyway? In any case, could you please try to pull that trick off again? Here's the WIP. Good luck! :)

Okay, I've done the cat-room and the room after that now. I lost 8 frames on the cat-boss (I managed to squeeze out one more frame), and I saved 1 frame on the room after that. So now I'm just 7 frames behind. I'm going to bed now, but I'll post what I've done: Here's the WIP. I tried getting a fairy or a crystal, but these took way too long to manipulate. But after all, loosing only 8 frames on the catboss is a good deal. I'll see if I can do some more work tomorrow. Good night.

Sorry Randil, I didn't notice the update. I've been in Spring Break (brain OFF) mode all week and haven't been paying attention to a lot of things online.
No problem. I hope you had a nice break. :)

I think I found a faster method for the boss. The Leave Early trick is really complicated to pull off here, but it's still possible.
Nice find. That trick saved 9 frames. :)
CtrlAltDestroy wrote:
Also, there has GOT to be a way to avoid hitting that cat on the way back.
I did some testing today, and this is what I found out: Getting hit by the cat while backtracking wastes 31 frames. Killing the cat the first time you meet him wastes (EDIT: now optimized) only 9 frames. So killing him saves 22 frames. I'll have to redo this level again, this time killing the cat the first time I visit that room. I wonder how many times I'm gonna have to redo this? :P If you have any more ideas, or some general tips when I'm redoing the level this time, please post them as soon as you can. I'll do more testing about optimizing ladder-climbing and such stuff now, to see what I can find out. EDIT: CtrlAltDestroy, have you found the memory address for boss HP? I've been looking for it, without luck...
