Thusday is done! This was another "Window Crashing Day". As you will see, I got a lot of paper refills on this day. I counted how many paper refills I got every day, and this is the result: Monday: 4 refills. Tuesday: 6 refills. Wednesday: 7 refills. Thursday: 13 refills. I hope this will keep rising even more. :D Because I got so many refills, I wasn't always able to use up all my papers before getting a new refill. Because I got so many refills on this day, I threw more papers on moving objects like the reaper, and the small car that drives around. If you have any comments or questions, then shoot. Otherwise, enjoy!

I was just wondering if it's possible to implemenet a table, that shows the all the rated movies for each console, from highet rated to lowest. I'm thinking that this could both show ratings for "Entertainment value" and "Technical quality". As it is right now, if I'm interested in knowing what movie has the highest rated entertainment value, for example, I have to check every movie. Of course, this list would need to update itself automatically. I hope you understand what I mean, if not, I'll try to clarify some more... What are your opinions on this?

Hmm, I don't know... It's possible, but it would waste time to slow down before crashing, which would oppose the "fastest time" goal, so I don't think it's really an option... and getting better paper drops doesn't save time either. Good idea though. :) I'm glad you like it so far!

Left/right, different targets, doesnt help for manipulation?
Nope... The only thing that affects paper refills, as far as I know, is the frames you start the game (the frame you press start on the startmenu). I've tested all kinds of things to manipulate luck, different inputs, hitting different targets, all kinds of things, but no luck...

Wednesday is done now! This was a "Window crashing day", which means that I focus on crashing windows more than other objects. Overall, I think it turned out fine. Oh, one thing that I should comment. On frame 13561 I throw a paper that hits an invisible wall of some kind. I only throw this to show this little weird bug. Besides that, There shouldn't be anything weird on this day. I had good luck on paper refills, so I could use up a lot of papers. Enjoy! qFox: I don't believe I answered your question about why I don't use up all my papers sometimes... The reason I don't always use them all up, are because there isn't anything to throw them at, basically. Sometimes two paper refills just come too close to each other, so I don't hve time to use up all the papers. As stated previously in this thread, it's not possible to manipulate where there refills appear without wasting time.

Up+down makes me go forward without my wheels turning. This is just a visual glitch, and it doesn't affect my speed in any way. I do have this put on autohold too, so it makes recording a lot easier. :) I think I'll play the training course once, on Sunday. It will probably be fun to show off on that course at least once. About destroying a more variety of things, I personally think I did a pretty good job destroying things on Monday and Tuesday. On "Assaulting day" I'll make sure I hit all those skateboarders and reapers, don't you worry! :D

Well, the traininggounds really is just a detour. Aiming for the fastest time should be just that, aiming for the fastest time.

Btw, at the end of each day it seems as if you died. Are you really just dying to avoid the extra course? (I seem to remember days are ended with a crosscountrycourse) If you really die to avoid these I vote to include these courses.
Hmm, I seem to get mixed messages here... Do you want me to play the training grounds or not? You are right that I die to avoid playing the training ground after each day. As you realize, this saves loads of time, many seconds per day. So if I should aim for "fastest time" I should really skip these. The reason why I'm thinking about playing it on sunday is to, like adelikat stated in his post, at least show of once how to play the training ground flawlessly. And besides, the game is basically beaten by the time I do play the training ground, I just who this off to show the audience one last thing before I end input. Should people really dislike this choise, I could just redo the very end of the movie and die like the other days instead. And thanks for the encouragement guys, I'll see if I can do Wednesday tomorrow or so. :)

Thanks for you comments, VANDAL. I can see your point, and let me comment on what I think about this subject. :P I think that timewise, this run is very, very close to frameperfect, and will stay that way. There is a possibility that I've encountered small amounts of lag, but that probably sums up to only about 10 frames at most. Unless someone finds a big glitch or some other weird timesaver, this is as fast as this game can be completed. Speaking of fastest completion, do you think it's a good idea to play the training course at the end of Sunday? It would add time to the run, but in some way, I think it could be entertaining to at least play through the training course once. What are your opinions on this? Should the mejority disagree with the goals for this run, I think that they would want a maximum score instead. But as I discussed with adelikat earlier, that perhaps a maximum score run wouldn't be very interesting. It would just mean throwing 3 papers at a time to every mailbox. In any case, if most people want a maximum score run, I'll just make one of those instead. TASing this game doesn't take too long time, really, so it would be allright. :) And if they demand a TAS of another Paperboy game, I'll look into making one. Though I think that most people will prefer this one, due to it being "the original", kind of like why the SMB-games for NES are preferred over the ones from Super Mario All-stars. If anyone reads this, and has something against my idea with playing every stage differently, please let me know! I would feel silly if I submit this and it gets immediately rejected for havign bad goals. In any case, if anyone who disagrees with the goals I have reads this, please, do say so! I would feel silly to submit a run that gets rejected for having bad goals. Especially when I've posted WIPs in the thread so that people can see and say what they think. I think that by having the goals I have, I make this run more interesting. And besides, I do aim for "fastest completion time" anyway, so my main goal is still in the spirit of speedrunning. :D

Wow, that was very impressive! It seemed to me like digits don't go over 100 million, so perhaps it was good that you died, otherwise the game might have crashed or something.

Tuesday is done now. Another "Wrecking day". I had some "bad luck" at one place on this day, I got two refills too close to each other, so I couldn't use up all my papers for that refill. Besides that, there isn't much to comment on. Just enjoy the show. :) All comments and questions are very welcome, and if there aren't any, I'll just continue on with "Window crashing day".

Haha, cool, my gamepad is almost identical to yours. :) My roommate has that exact gamepad I think. Mine is a little special though, it has analog sticks and a program that assigns keys to the gamepad's buttons. :P But that gamepad is pretty close to the PS gamepad, so I think you'll like it.

Monday is done now. There isn't much to comment. When there weren't any red houses to throw papers at between the refills, I threw more than one paper to each subscriber, instead of not throwing any at all. Other than that, I tried to keep this entertaining, and destroyed as many things as I could without breaking the perfect delivery goal. Since I have 7 days to play, but only have 5 playing strategies, I think I'll do the week like this: Monday: Wrecking day Tuesday: Wrecking day Wednesday: Window crashing day Thursday: Window crashing day Friday: Daredevil day Saturday: Assaulting day Sunday: Lawful day. I chose this because the strategies will get "nicer", and less mean... So that it looks like paperboy really knows his job by the end of the run. :) All comments are of course welcome. If you have a new playing strategy I could use, please tell me. It would be nice to have 2 more strategies, that way I can have one per day. Unless someone protests, I'll play Tuesday as a Wrecking day too. Next WIP should be up in a few days.

Good job. :) Entertaining run, and good improvement over the current one. Easy Yes vote. Do you think you'll be attempting to obsolete Genisto's run, someday in future?

There are two things that I still have to have in the run everyday, no matter what theme the day is, and that is that I have to get a perfect delivery every day (in order to get the best ending), and that I have to have top speed throughout the whole day (to achieve fastest time). So slowing down or breaking a subscriber's window, no matter how tempting, is not possible. :P I'll go for "Wrecking day", mainly because I started doing that today, and I don't want to redo the first part again, but also because I want to viewer to get caught in the movie as soon as possible. If the first level they see seems "boring" (aka Lawful day), without too much happening, they might stop watching after Monday, thinking that the movie looks boring. I like you arrangement idea for the days, but you could also look at it the other way, that the paperboy gains experience the more he delivers, and in the end is very calm and proffessional. :) In any case, I'm working on Monday right now. For some reason I had some misfortune with the paper refills somehow, which is weird because they appeared on different places in the first WIP. :S It would be nice to understand that random factos. This doesn't affect the speed or anything, it's just that I have to spare my papers for deliveies, so I can't destroy as many things... I'll see if I can have the new Monday up sometime today or tomorrow.

I haven't seen you in a long time, Tailz. It's good to see that you're back. :) And I agree on what VANDAL answered to your question. And that's what I wanted to bring up with this post.... I've been thinking about various ways to play a level in this game. And I'm thinking more and more about VANDAL's idea, that perhaps I should use different strategies different days. I think that if I use one strategy throughout the whole run, the audience is likely to be bored, at least somewhere around day 5-6, but if I use different strategies every day, I think they'll enjoy watching this a bit more. I've come up with a few ideas on different playing strategies. Here are my thoughts: Wrecking day: In honor of "Wreck more stuff"-adelikat. :P On this day, I'll focus on destroying as much stuff as I can (for the non-subscribers of course). Ill throw only one paper to each subscriber. Daredevil day: On this day, I'll focus on cheating death. I'll just ride as close as I can to different stuff, both objects and persons. I'll use my papers in the same way as in the "Wrecking day", but mainly I'll focus on being really close to things. Assaulting day:On this day, I'll throw one paper to each subscriber, the rest of the papers I'll use on throwing at people. I won't get any points for this, but maybe it can be entertaing non the less. What do you think? Window crashing day:What it sounds like. One paper per subscriber, the rest of the papers used for crashing windows. Lawful day: On this day I'll throw as many papers as I can to my subscribers, and don't destroy anything at all. I was thinking about riding as much as I can on the street, just to be more lawful. I think that a day like this would surprise the viewer, since he probably expects me to destroy things. I'm not so sure about if this could be any entertaining though... This means that, for example. Monday could be "Wrecking day", Tuesday could be assigned to "Window crashing day", and so on. Perhaps I could use the same strategy for two days. Is this a good or bad idea? Or do you think I should stick with the goals that me and adelikat were talking about? Let me know what you think about this idea. And of course, if you have any ideas of your own, throw them out here. :)

Perhaps the "multiple paper throwing trick" could be shown once or twice throughout the run, just to show the viewer that it's possible? If you're wondering, it's also possible to throw 3 papers into one window, getting 300 points for each one. I'll redo the run then, with these new goals in mind. I might have a new WIP up tomorrow. :) I'll take a good luck on the current WIP to see what can be done more impressive. But generally, I'll see if I can wreck a lot more stuff! :D

Hmm, I would have like to see more crazy demolishing of stuff. What I worry is that as you get more resubscribers, you will only have enough papers for the mailboxes and not be able to do the fun stuff :(
I'm not sure, but I think I get more paper refills the mroe subscribers I have. I'm not positive about this, but it seemed like I got more paper refills on Wednesday than on Monday.
adelikat wrote:
BTW, is there a time difference between betting a resubscriber and losing subscribers?
I'm guessing you mean "getting". And I don't think so, I could do some testing to look into the case. If so, it would be a shorter loading time between levels.
adelkat wrote:
Either way, maybe you could do a minimal paper delivery run that maximizes score. So you just keep the one subscriber and go psycho on the rest. So your goals could be: 1) Minimal successful deliveries (1 per day) 2) Fastest time 3) Max score
Hmm, I'm not sure I totally agree on you on that, if I understand you right... My opinion is that I should aim for "best ending", which is achieved by getting "perfect delivery" every day. Plus, I think that many people want to see a full week of perfect deliverie's, since it's really hard to do on console. I think it's more impressive if I get perfect delivery every day. However, I am willing to compromise a little. :) As it is right now, I waste about 3 papers/subscriber. Instead, I could just throw 1 paper to every house, still getting a perfect delivery every day, and also have more papers to throw on windows and stuff. How does that sound? This leaves me with the goals: 1. Throw only one paper to every subscrber. 2. Fastest time. 3. Maximum score. Oh, and thanks for watching. :)

Thanks for the input guys. :) After thinking through different strategies, I think I'll go with a "still aim for maximum score, but play each day differently". For example, since all objects except mailboxes give 300 points, one day I could aim just to destroy windows, another day I could just aim for trashcans and graves (or whatever they are). I'd rather avoid changing the "maximum score" goal in the middle of the movie now, because I think that the movie looks pretty good as it is. And besides how much you score, there are ther things you can change, sucha as, like you said, VANDAL, how close you are yo crash. I'm thinking that one day I could focus on driving mainly on the street (I mean where the cars drive) and the other day I could aim for driving left of the road, among the houses. Maybe it'll be interesting to drive totally lawful one day, just riding the bike on the road, delivering papers... I'll see if I can do Thursday today... We'll see how it turns out.

Old topic, new bump! :) I've been playing this game quite a lot lately, and I'm thinking about taking up the TAS on it. I've done up to Wednesday so far, that's three levels, and I'm wondering if anyone finds this interesting? Here's the WIP. My main goal is perfect delivery as fast as possible, and my secondary goal is maximum score. Because of the "Maximum score" goal, I throw most of three papers into every mailbox when I can (I get 700 points per paper for this). This is as many as you can throw without loosing speed. As a result, I don't destroy many things in this run, but rather deliver many papers. So, my questions are, do you think that the "Maximum score" goal is good? Or would you rather see me break more stuff. On Tuesday and Wednesday I break a lot of stuff anyway, because of the Paper refills. Paper refills can not be manipulated without wasting time, this is why I don't bother to manipulate where they appear. After all, their placement does not affect the time of this run. I hope some of you finds the WIP fun to watch. :)

Allright, the "ViewCopyBuffer" function seems to work flawlessly. :) An idea that just hit me is that it would be a good idea to have a few new error messages in the "Splice Movie" section. For example. if you neither have a source movie or a target movie selected and press "Splice", it says "Movie types don't match". Instead, it would be nice if it said "You must select at source movie and a target movie", or something like that. The same goes for if you have a source movie selected but no target movie, it could just say "You must select a target movie". I think you get my point.

I hate to do this, but I found two bugs. :P 1. If you don't have a moviefile open, and go to "View Copy Buffer", and close the window using the "x" in the top right corner, you get an "Unhandles exception" error. 2. The "Splice movie" function can't load .fmv movies, though it seems to handle the other formats well.

Is level 3 outfit on one level = level 3 outfit in the next? It takes you quite sa while to get the airplane in some levels, it would help if you could get it in advance.
Yes, if the level after the boss is the same kind of level as the boss itself is. For example, if the boss is a normal land boss, and the level after that is a normal land level, you will keep your upgrade. So the only way for me to start a flying level with the airplane, is if the level before that is a flying level, and there aren't any two flying levels after each other.
Truncated wrote:
I don't know how many more extra hits you have to administer to the boss in the less powerful suit, but one idea is to run out of hearts just as the level ends, so you transform back automagically.
The only way to kill bosses faster than I do in the movie is to kill them entirely with the tank, this will kill the bosses in one less hit, which would save about 100 frames per boss. It takes 10 timeunits per heart to run out. If you have the third upgrade (the tank) you will get transformed to the magician. So it requires a level that takes more than 100 timeunits for this to work (50 to run out of hearts with the tank, and 50 to run our of hearts with the magician.). Perhaps this was a little confusing, but as I said, the only way to kill a boss faster would be to kill them entirely with the tank, but this leaves me with several hearts left. And the possibility to run out of hearts right before the boss is killed is not possible, since it takes to long for the hearts to run out (and the fact that when I run out of hearts with the tank, I still get turned back to the magician, leaving me with 10 hearts).
