I think I found a bug in version 0-7: If you go to "Splice Movie" and press "Load" and choose an .fcm-file, it seems that it doesn't load the file I choose; in othe words, the "Source Movie" field is still empty, even after I chose the source movie... You should check this out.

Perhaps the "walk through stairs" glitch, shown in the glitched "Zelda - A link to the Past" video? That could look pretty funny. If made a little longer, the GIF could also show how he reaches a surprised Ganon that way, and just passing him, to receive the Triforce. Just an idea.

You guys are really amazing... This run really deserves a star. :) Oh, I'm voting Yes, of course.

I found what I think is a rather critical bug. If you don't have a movie-file open and "View copy buffer" and press the "Clear" button, I got an "Unhandled exception" error of some sort. You should check it out. I also found a very small bug. It's really small, so don't worry too much about it. If you have a .fmv file open, and press "Save as", it doesn't recognize it as the format .fmv by default. To compare, if you press "save as" while having a .fcm open, it recognizes it as the format .fcm. I'll take a closer look after school, but right now, I really have to go. :)

Could someone please tell me the name of the first game in that video?

There is no question that it is optimized but it doesn't seem that optimizing this game is very impressive. I find it a bit too simplistic and a not very entertaining. The teleporting this was cool, but that was about it. I vote a weak no. I don't think that there is much you can do to make it more "entertaining". Pacifist seems like a bad idea.
Yeah, I understand your point. I guess this game isn't extremely fun to watch being played. As a judge, do you think you could reach a verdict on this run? You have a lot of experience with TAS:es and I trust your decision. I would understand if this gets rejected, looking back at the feedback that it got. I would just get happy if this movie is given a decision, whatever it should be. :)

This new version looks very good. And by the way, I was TAS:ing some yesterday, and I found something that I had forgotten a few levels ago. So instead of redoing all levels after that one, I used your program to copy the input from my first movie, and it worked out great! :) I agree with xoinx that undo button would be great. Make sure that ctrl+z also works too, please. :) Now to some comments after taking a look at your version 0-7. 1. A "Recent" tag, under "File", similiar to the "Recent" tag under "File" in FCEU. 2. Perhaps an eaier way to record input. It would be nice to be able to just mark the frames you want, and then press, say, the button "b" on your keyboard to apply the input "b" to those frames. It's perhaps a little troublesome to first mark the frames, then write the input in the controller field, and then click update. 3. A "Game pad buttons" field. This is pretty hard to explain, but I mean that you could have a field of boxes (I mean, a box like the "update" and "go" box that are already in the program) representing all the NES-pad buttons. So if you want to apply, say, "Start" to a few frames, just mark the frames you want to apply "Start" to, and left click on the "Start"-box with your mouse. 4. The "Are you sure you want to paste..." box that pops up when you try to copy frames is in a way good, I can see why you implemented it, but if you were to add a "undo" button this feature could be be removed. If you're copy-pasting a lot, this pop-up can get annoying, and if you have an undo-function, you can just press ctrl+z if you make a mistake. I see you fixed most of my demands (hehe ;) ), but my tips 1,2 6 and 7 from my previous post still stand. You're probably already working with these, but I wanted to remind you in case you forgot. Anyway, good luck with the programming! :)

After fooling around some with this program, I have found some things that at least I think would be really nice features. But first, let me say that this program seems really useful, and these things I've commented on are mainly small things. Mostly, this program works just fine. Some of these things may have already been mentioned, but I'll explain how I think they could be implemented: 1. The possibility to have two movie-files open at the same time. This isn't anything urgent, but it would be a nice feature. I'm thinking that this could be done pretty much the same way as Mozilla Firefox has "tags" or whatever they're called. 2. The possibility to edit the "Author"-text. Since this won't change the movie itself in any way, I think it could be a fun thing to have. It could also be useful, for example, if you forgot to write anything there when you started recording the movie, and want to have your name there when you submit it this site. 3. The possibility to mark several frames at a time. I'm thinking that this could be done by just dragging a box over the frames you want to mark, or by holding down the "ctrl" key and mark the frames you want. The input you then choose, will be applied to all the frames you have marked. As it is right now, it's quite troublesome to make a "hold down B for 50 frames" input in the program, since you would have to apply the B-input to each and every frame. 4. When you choose "Open", it can open all the files you have. Wouldn't it be nicer if it only opens movie-files? This way, if you have both, say .fcm-files and .zip-files in one folder (like I do), it's a lot easier to see what files you can actually open with the program. 5. The option to see the filename of the file you're currently working on. This could be shown above the "ROM Title" box or something. 6. When you press "Save as", it could be nice if it had the default filename by default. In other words, when you for example press "save as" after editing .jpg you have on your computer in Paint, it has the defualt filename by default. I don't know how to put this in other words.... Sorry for being confusing,. :P 7. A small Help-section would be nice to have. It doesn't have to be big, but just a brief guide on how to use this program. And now, to some questions: 1. How do you use the "Insert Multiple frames" and "Remove multiple frames" functions? 2. How do you use the "Compare movie input range" function?

I can't run the program, when I try to run the .exe I get an error that's something like "Can't initiate program correctly (0xc0000135). Click OK to exit the program" (I translated this from Swedish, so it might not be 100% accurate). Do you know why this is? EDIT: Nevermind, I should have checked the previous posts... Sorry.

The pauses look awkward but obviously make sense.
Yep, they do. :P The reason I stop and wait for a few frames, is because I can't jump over the rockets wihhout getting hit if I don't wait first. I've done some serious testing to see if this can be avoided, but it can't. The alternative would be to duck under the missiles, which is a lot slower. But rest assured, I wait only as long as absolutely necessary before I jump over the missiles. :) In some way, I kinda like these waiting periods, it makes the run somewhat more interesting and not just "run and slash" all the time. But on the other hand, waiting periods are not extremely fun in a TAS. I hope they weren't too annoying, because I assure you that there will be a lot more of those.

Since this movie is a lot slower than Walker's run, (as stated above in this thread) shouldn't it be rejected? I see no reason to keep this movie in the workbench.

I have started this run over. Reason: I've been doing some testing and looking at the game's memory when I stumbled upon the memory address taht determines the health of the boss at the end of the stage. By looking at this value, and doing some testing with the "Fire Wheel" attack, I managed to beat stage 1 a whole 142 frames faster! It turns out that if you attack at the exact right frame, you will deal 5 times as much damage with the Fire Wheel than with a normal attack. By looking at the game's RAM, I was able to abuse this quite heavily. Here's the new WIP. ( PS: I like the high re-record count. :P ) Enjoy! :)

It looks good so far. I once made a WIP of this game as well, but I quit because I got stuck at luck manipulation on a boss, where I constantly lost like 6 seconds or so... :( Here is my WIP I'm not going to continue it or anything, so I leave this game up to you! :) I have compared our WIPs on the first level, and you are 2 frames faster than me. I haven't checked for the other levels, but you are free to do so if you wish. I hope you get at least something out of watching my WIP. Good luck!

The official time is simply the time of your .fcm (I hope you used FCE Ultra to record the movie.) To see your time of your .fcm, open up your ROM, go to "File", and click "Replay Movie..." Now choose your moviefile. You should see the movie's length in that box now (this is also the official time), as well as some other information. To submit the movie, you first have to login here using your normal username and password, and then go here to submit your movie. Before you submit it, make sure you've followed all the instructions on the "Submit Movie"-page carefully, especially the rules. Let me know if you have any problems. Good luck! :) Just curious, how much faster than Walker's run did it get? Oh, and if you are very unsure about how to do it, send me the .fcm and the comments on the run, and I could submit it for you if you want.

Thanks everyone who voted on this movie. As I've read from all your comments, the general opinion seems to be "very well played, but pretty dull game". I can see what you mean, so I was wondering, is this game doomed to be a boring run, or do you think it would be much more entertaining to go for a pacifist run? Other than that, I don't see how to change this run in any way, unless someone finds another useful glitch. Though I'm still glad that some people enjoyed this movie, that's what makes me motivated to make new TAS:es, so thanks! :)

Thanks for watching, mister Angerfist! :) As you probably saw in the movie, this game is pretty hard to make frame perfect. There are lots of enemies blocking your path, that you can't simply kill without slowing down. So you have to determine whether it's faster or not to kill them or to wait. I've calculated that getting hit wastes exactly 26 frames compared to walking, and sometimes it's worth getting hit, and sometimes it's faster to wait for the right time to make use of your ninja training. I have a .txt-file that I've made, showing exactly how much time you loose on slashing/taking damage, and such stuff. What I like about this game is that the levels are very different from each other. Level 3 is also a little fire-based, with flamethrowing machines blocking your path. Another good thing about this game is that it's really not straightforward or dull, it's a lot of slashing, climbing, avoiding shots in a tool-assisted kind of way, and some fast boss battles. And the music is nice too. :) Anyway, I really like speedrunning this game, and I hope you like watching it. I'll try my best to keep this at the same quality as the other Ninja Gaiden runs, though it's very hard, calculating when and where to take damage, and when/where to use your special fire-wheel attack. I should stop writing now, and go to bed. Good night.

Is there no interest in this game? Anyway, I just finished level 2 today, so I thought I'd bump this thread. I'm starting to like TAS:ing this game more and more, it's actually really hard. I think the WIP looks pretty good so far, but let me know if you spot something. Download the current WIP here. I hope at least someone finds this interesting, because it sure is fun TAS:ing it, and I personally think that the game itself is really good and is well suited for speedrunning. I'll see when I can have the next WIP up, probably sometime next week or so. PS: In my first post, for some reason, I said that the game's name was "Ninja Gaiden Zero". This is just plain wrong, the game's name is of course "Ninja Gaiden Shadow". Sorry for the confusion, I was pretty tired when I made that first post. :P

Old topic, new bump. Ninja Gaiden Shadowis basically like the Ninja Gaiden games for NES, with a few new things, but also some things that are not here. You have a Hook shot that you can shoot upwards, and you also have a special "Fire wheel" attack that can be used. Basically, this is just another Ninja Gaiden game, short, fun, and makes a pretty good TAS, at least in my opinion. I've made a run through the first (of five) level, take a look and tell me what you think: Download the moviefile here. The movie was done with the (U) ROM. You will notice that I stop for a few frames before jumping over the missile-robot's missiles. This is because it's not possible to keep forward momentum and jump over them, you have to stop for a few frames before you jump. Other than that, I don't think there are many more things to add. Let me know what you think about the run so far, and I'll try to have a new WIP up pretty soon.

It depends on what gamepad you're using. I'm using a Logitech gamepad, and I have this program that allows me to assign gamepad-buttons to keyboard buttons. So I've bound frame advance to the "A" button on my keyboard, and in turn, bound the "L1" button on my gamepad to "A". A funny effect on this in that when I press L1 on my gamepad while writing something, like this post, I write the letter A. :) If you don't have such a program that I have, I don't really know what you should do... You could try erokky's program, or get your hands on one of the better Logitech gamepads, they usually come with the program that I have, I think. Good luck.

A very nice movie. Most of it was the same as the last one, but skipping all the boss rematches, that was a great find. I'm voting yes, no doubt about it. Oh, and this should probably be set to "published" soon, too. :)
