Bowser in the Dark World made me dizzy. Nicely done.

I think 'amatuer' is too harsh a word. True it's no 'SMW: The Legend Continues', but very few hacks reach that level of depth, especially when you consider that the author of the hack is the same person who created the SMW level editor, so not everyone has the advantage of knowing the game's code inside and out. There are plenty worse hacks out there that try to pass themselves off as 'total overhauls' that don't even come close to Mario Adventure. Personally, about the only thing I dislike is the random weather effects, which is what erally screws with the colors in the levels, as you pointed out. As for the level design, well, I rather like it myself, there's some creative levels in there, and the really good stuff is in the final few worlds, but we're all entitled to our opinion.

I'm a bit torn on this one, but I think I'll vote yes, since it's still a pretty good TAS despite a few small flaws. Though, I have to echo the sentiment on the taking damage to save time. It's not so bad in Egypt, but later on with the blades, refilling the hearts takes quite some time. Have you thought about getting a life-refilling power-up along the way? I spotted two on your route, and while one would have taken more time than would have been worth it, but there was another that should have only taken a moment to grab, and certainly would have negated much of the needless heart-refilling, since through a power-up the life meter refills instantly. It could stand to have a few wrinkles ironed out, but for such a quick job it's some nice work.

Not too bad. I've said it before, since you're not submitting this version don't kill yourself over the minor errors. Once the movie is done then you, or someone else, can take it and try and make a more perfected version. Till then, keep it up.

True, it could become a reality, or close enough anyway. But the fact is it's not yet near completion, so posting about it on a forum for potential NES TASes is a tad premature. ;)

It looks good. You said yourself earlier that you didn't intend on submitting this particular version, so don't sweat the small errors. I can't see any problems with your actual routes, so that's all good. Man World 3 has the easiest key to find in the whole game, though. One question, near the end of World 3 you takes another short-cut by going through the corner of a wall, in the process you're hit by a Koopa Troopa. Could you have killed the Troopa with a Magic Blast, or would that have been impossible?

Neither can I, or anyone else it seems. Which makes me even more skeptical. Hoaxes like this have popped up before, so I wouldn't be too surprised.

On a related note, I've been playing through Mischeif Makers normally on Mupen64rerecording, and found that it randomly crashes. There seems to be no pattern to it, as I can restart the emulator and retry the same level and not run into the problem. It may just be my settings, though.

Sadly, read the comments. It's not a NES hack, it's a PC game that resembles FF2j and FFX. I doubt it could be TASed, even if it is a neat idea.

I made a quick test run of this game, as it's probably one of my favorite N64 games. It's by no means perfect, but it's a good first shot. It goes up to getting the Chain Pipe at Mt. Fuji and returning to Oedo in about 8000 frames. Test Run. I have an analog gamepad, so it made recording the movie relatively easy to do, but it's hard to get pixel perfect with it. You'll probably spot a few places where I have to adjust the angle of my running a bit to compensate for my direction. Though I am pretty happy with how the inside Mt Fuji turned out, that room took quite a bit to get right. I may continue this test run up until the end of the first dungeon, and perhaps including the first Impact sequence, just to see how well the emulator handles the game up to that point. A note, I use Rice's Video Plugin v5.6.0, to my experience that plugin handles the game better than the others. Though no emulator nor plugin can emulate the game perfectly, unfortunately, it's not as well emulated as Mario 64, or even Banjo Kazooie.

Maybe you missed that part of IMPORTANT.txt? Anyway, I'm glad you got it working, and hopefully that is also what Thereisnospoon needs to do to get it working.
I did read the txt, I swear, I just somehow missed that part. I'm totally not making excuses. ;)

Ok, I have it working now. I actually never tried the original version of Mupen64 before this, I mostly used Project64 and 1964. At any rate, when I installed the original version of Mupen64 in the same directory as your edited version, suddenly your version worked for me. So, I dunno, I guess there was a critical file or something in the original that was left out of what you provided. I still couldn't get Jabo's plugin to work, I kept getting the same errors, but other video plugins would work for me. I'm still trying to work out the best one, but I tried Maza's and Spezzafer's test M64 movies, and they worked swell, despite different plugins. Keep up the good work with it.

Nope, I tried all the graphics plugins on Zophar's Domain, none of em were any different. My PC is more than capable of running other N64 emulators (Cel 2.5 Ghz, 768 MB Ram, ATI Radeon 9250). Half the time the emulator crashes even before the rom is fully loaded, the other half of the time it appears the rom is loaded, but it crashes before the Super Mario 64 logo can appear. The only plugin which gives me anything different is Jabo's plugin which comes with the emulator, it says 'Direct3D failed to initialize HAL device, initialize the dll before you try to config it'.

You'll have to work-in getting the Bracelet at some point as well. I'm not sure how often that drops throughout the second play, do you only have one chance to get it? Or can you pick it up before the final battle?

Hm, I can't get the emulator to work at all. I've been trying it with the USA version of Mario 64, but no luck. Jabo's plugin won't even be recognized by the emulator unless I turn my monitor depth down to 16-bit, and then when I try to run the rom I get a Direct3D HAL error. (I got the rom directory set in the GUI)

Since there is a level select code incorporated into the game, I'm sure an exception can be made for it. If only because you'd otherwise have to play through the levels twice. Would you use the sub-heading 'Uses Warps' or 'Uses Level Select' though?

Or, another possibility for a 0 star run would be to find some way to go through the Dire Dire Docks wall without actually entering the level, perhaps hitting the area where the level-entry-wall meets the corridor. It might not be possible, but it's probably more likely than giong through the key-door without the key...

Why not reset after killing the koopa kid? Surely the following scenes waste time.
That may or may not work. It depends on when the game 'tags' the world as being completed. When Mario grabs the wand? When the King starts talking? When the Princess's letter appears? Some testing should tell us. Remember: The Key didn't register in the inventory until it stopped flashing on the screen, like any other item aquired in a level. Depending on when the game tags the world as complete it may not save much time, considering that you'll have to go through the title screen, and while that isn't a lot of time lost, it might negate any that was saved.

I would also love to see the three seperate runs. I'm sure it would be justified, and besides, who doesn't love Super Mario 64?

I can't believe N64 TASing is being considered, this is wild. As for games that haven't been mentioned yet... Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and Goemon's Great Adventure. These two games rock.

Looks nice, I like your creative shortcuts throughout the second world. At first I wondered why you took that hit fighting that one Boom-Boom, but I see with the positioning of the platform it allowed you to hit it immediately. Nice.

If it means getting the best items for a faster game, then a few seconds wait is no big deal. Good luck with it.
