You can't really get a Frog Suit until the end of World 2, and the Tanooki and Hammer suits come later than that. What would you do in the meantime?

Yeah, I need to get a better handle on the grenades, then it would work right?

I'll practice with the 2 player run thing and see if I get good enough with it to try. In the meantime, I'll continue with this 1 player version and see how that goes. Who knows, I might even obsolete my own run if I get good enough at 2 players.

It's a lot more than 4 frames. It's at least 12, I think, but you can keep doing other stuff during that time so it's not like you just have to wait 12 frames every time you fire. Press , (the comma key) and play my test movie using frame advance to see what buttons I push to pull it off. I think it has to do with holding B after the 1st shot to cancel later shots while still holding A long enough to cancel the grenade.
Ok, I'll give that a try.

Also, what do you think about using 2 players? Is there any reason not to do it besides it being harder to record? One player could destroy all the buildings while the other player kills the necessary number of bad guys, or they could take turns (or maybe both concentrate fire on heavier targets if the game counts it as doing damage faster).
A 2-player run, now that would be spectacular. For me, it would be improbable. With enough practice I could probably do it the way you first suggested-- one guy destroys the buildings and the other takes out the guys. My problem would be controlling both people. I've never been too good with controling two people at once. What's the trick? Is there a certain way to control both people acurately at the same time?

I downloaded it and it works nicely. It's going to take some getting used to, but I like using Frame Advance instead of playing at a slower speed. Still having trouble with the grenade thing, I've held the button and skipped 1 frame and he still threw it, then did the same with 2, 3, and 4, and he still threw the damn thing. I watched 2-3 shots fire and got the same result. Maybe my rom is screwy. I'll download a different one and try that.

Wow, that's really nice. The game looks too good for the NES.

You only get sent out through the waterfall if you get carried out with the current in the Metal Cap star room.

Ahhhh, so that's how it works. Come to think of it, I did notice that he would throw a grenade depending on how I pressed the button, but I didn't think to look into it further. That should clear things up. By the way, what speed did you do your test run at nitsuja?

Thanks for the compliment. There are 5 worlds in the game, each with 4 levels each. So that makes a total of 20 levels in the game.

Well, it's been a while but I took nitsuja's advice and redid the first world of the run. He was quite right; with the cursor trick he showed me I was able to clean up the run quite a bit. You can see it here: http://impact.megarpg.net/cabaltest.fcm You may notice grenades fly everywhere. This is a problem I'm looking into but am having no avail with. For some reason when I press the fire button (A button) he throws a grenade, then fires his gun. According to the game controls and www.gamefaqs.com, you throw a grenade by pressing Up+A at the same time. However, he throws a grenade when I just press A. I think this has something to do with the speed of the game, since I'm playing at 25% normal speed. I left it alone for now, but I'll be sure to fix it before the new run is done.

If he does kill all the Hammer Bros. then it would be better if he left them as Hammer Bros. instead of "transforming" them into the White Coin Ship, because it would take longer to get through the ship than the Hammer Bros. levels.

Maybe we could make a section for bad hacks, a place where people can make fake runs and laugh at poorly made hacks. That way they won't clog up the forums and get mistaken for real runs.
Or not...

The only way you get the cloud other than the princess giving it to you in her letter is from Hammer Bros. So if he skipped all Hammer Bros. levels he would only get 2 clouds. Or was it 3... I can't remember how many the princess gives you.

Hmm, you know I never realized "Toilet Mario" could be offensive to anyone. Sorry to all that were offended. Maybe we could make a section for bad hacks, a place where people can make fake runs and laugh at poorly made hacks. That way they won't clog up the forums and get mistaken for real runs.

The point of this thread was to show a bad hack and to get a good laugh at the same time. I don't think it worked though.

This is an example of a bad hack. I did this because with more and more people suggesting to see runs of hacks made, I figured we ought to see a hack that proves that not all hacks are good. This is a hack of SMB1 that is the funniest I've ever seen. The game remains the same, save the princess from Bowser (or Koopa) and live happily ever after. The only thing changed is the sprites, which is why I only did the first level. I'm not going to reveal anything about the sprites because I don't want to spoil anything. For some reason this hack would only work with Nesticle and Famtasia, so I chose the latter. You can get the run http://impact.megarpg.net/TM.fmvhere and the hack <url to ROM removed by Bisqwit> here. I think you will agree with me that while his hack is hilarious, it is a prime example of a bad hack.

Are you going to use the Super P-Wing at some levels? You'll pick up quite a few of them (3 or 4) if you are going to do all the Hammer Bros. levels and it would be a shame to see them go to waste. It just depends on what levels you choose to use them on. Which levels would you use them anyway? To me, side-scrolling levels seem like an ideal choice since it eliminates waiting to make a jump or something, since you just fly at the top of the screen the whole time. You could add some entertainment by bouncing on enemies as you fly. That's what I think anyway.

Amazing... simply amazing. Excellent job as usual CtrlAltDestroy. I loved the 4 plane "kamikaze" and how you killed one plane with the butt of your plane at one time. It was going off the bottom of the screen and you just bumped it and it died. Great job. I hope you do finish this eventually, it would be awesome to watch the whole thing.

I vote for SMB3 as well, and the Super Metroid 100%. I could do both myself but I just can't do them to our standards. In fact I HAVE done them both myself but just never recorded it, mainly because it was on the original console, and was just for fun.
