Beer is great. I spent seven years in college at some heavy-drinking midwestern schools, so I got to drink a lot of it. :) I can drink a lot very quickly and had a lot of fun doing keg stands, bongs, shotgunning, etc. I quickly graduated from freshman piss-water to higher quality beer though. Now that I live in Oregon I drink mostly locally brewed beers, and there are plenty of them on tap anywhere you go. A good beer is like candy to me, it goes down so easy. Wow, this is making me want to drink. Some of my favorite brews: Honey Brown, Dos Equis, Fat Tire. On a business trip in Taiwan, I found out that they only have one major domestic beer, called Taiwan Beer, and it's pretty good.

1) I tried this since I thought it might be easier for a 2-player run, I let my gf use a controller. But actually, I think it might be easier to just assign the keys better. 2) Yes, if I'm into TASing a game I get excited and talk about it a lot. In turn I listen to her fanfic ideas. 3) Yes, she's also a geeky engineer and I have gotten her into video games. I show her some of my WIPs and some other TASes which look cool.

Actually, I don't think this should obsolete wild warping run. Although you could argue that wild warp is a debugging code, I think that here it leads to lots of interesting tricks and sequence breaks which makes the game completely different. That's why I think both styles are worth having a run. Sorry for waiting to post on this.

Cool, I totally support this. I was hoping someone else would do a non-warping run because I have been a little too lazy to TAS lately. I watched your first test but I should watch this before voting. For everyone's consideration, the finer points of movement and such are very tedious to optimize because there is a lot of lag. The lag also makes it pretty much impossible to do much hex editing. Finally, leveling is even more tedious when making the video than it is when watching...

Ok, I am trying this since it seems more promising than compiling in Linux. I got up to the make step and then I get a bunch of errors referencing drivers/win/input.h and drivers/win/input.c. What did I do wrong? I work as an application-level engineer so I don't know how to compile entire programs myself. ;)

Watched this movie and was very impressed. You've clearly put some thought into everything and have some great new ideas. I love how you were still able to skip the evil island dungeon! Optimizing the spawning is very difficult. The explanation I gave before is really just a simplified version. There are some other factors which sometimes prevent monsters from respawning even when it seems that they should. If you really want to hone things up you need to calculate levelup building rates for different strategies. Figure out how long it takes to do the loop, how many enemies you kill and from that you can get an exp/sec rating. I ended up with a pretty big spreadsheet on all this info. I'm interested to know more about the death glitch. How does it work and where else could it be used?

Sweet, someone else is actually attempting this game! Your wizard battle is indeed very good. The rest is pretty decent, your movements are not always optimal, but I don't blame you. This game isn't too bad to TAS until you start worrying about all the details. When I started to do that it became more and more annoying. Don't worry about getting everything perfect. If you can finish with this level of quality it will be nice, especially since everyone seems to want a non-warping run. Good luck!

The earlier runs on this game were done before a few notable improvements to snes9x. After the new timing and fake mute options were added it seems just about every game is now desync-free. So please, turn those options on and go ahead after this game!

Well, if you think this TAS is boring, you should try playing it normally. It is a very difficult game and takes forever (I had a lot of spare time growing up). 49 minutes is faster than a human would be able to do some of the individual levels. I like how fast the maze levels go in this, they are normally very difficult-but this is probably because you have to draw your own map. It looks well optimized to me. Normally the side levels in this game consist of stopping and shooting everyone like a spy would normally do. But this run shows that Golgo 13 can slowly approaches each enemy and deliver a sound martial arts blow. The crosshair scenes might not all be optimal, but they are definitely close. You can't make all the enemies come at you at once. This might not be the best game to TAS but I think it is interesting enough. The scenes with women are an excellent guide to dealing with the opposite sex. Duke always knows exactly what to say: "..." I voted yes.

Hmm, interesting. I tried playing this game normally lately. It is ok if you use an infinite life code because you get just two lives and no continues. Anyway, your run is sweet, but can't you skip the boss description message if you hit start?

I like to use Mario when I am just playing through this game, but I don't think a TAS with him would be that cool. Most of the levels would look similar to playing as Toad or Luigi, just slower. A Doki Doki Panic run would be interesting, but mostly just for historical value. It would be much slower because you aren't allowed to run and it would also be somewhat tedious because all four characters have to beat the game. Interestingly, one character can start in the second chapter (world) and optionally go back to world 1, but I'm not sure if 23w5w7 is faster than 1w4w67.

Holy shit!! I didn't think so much awesome ninja goodness could fit in such a short time. So sweet and smooth, just like a ninja should be. About NG3, I would speculate that your ninja powers may exceed mine enough to shave a few frames on some levels and boss fights. But as you mentioned, it will take more (like a new glitch) to get more than a second or two overall. I didn't do much luck manipulation, though it doesn't seem to be possible in many cases. If you can get moving platforms to line up at the right time it would be a pretty big deal, but good luck.

http://fceultra.sourceforge.net/ Looks like there are a few people who have actually planned out a few things to do in FCEU development. I just read through this thread and it seems like we could benefit from a more organized development effort on our emulators. Is anyone interested in joining the sourceforge team? Several of the features they are discussing have been done long ago by blip and nitsuja so they could get a good leap just by taking our most recent version. It seems like we would be best off collaborating with these guys because many of our features are general enhancements. Since most people download from sourceforge we will have more people testing. I bet we can work it out so that the main version of FCEU will have all the basic TAS features and then perhaps we could separately maintain a TAS patch which will have more advanced stuff like Bisqbot, etc. One more thing, does anyone have the latest source for our 98.16, preferably something I can get to compile under Linux? (If we were using sourceforge this wouldn't be a problem...)

There was definitely a run of this some time ago which wasn't well liked. Check eaten by a grue. Edit: Here it is.

The added bug abuse is sounding very interesting. I am also looking forward to seeing the bosses more thoroughly pwned. Of course it's sad to lose so much progress on your current run but this will be way cooler when you finish. I am glad you are switching to red jewel/secret level only. I thought it looked pretty stupid to pick up and keep all the herbs when you never take a hit. But I don't know if picking up and then dropping all the herbs would be much better. So I assume you will still be going for a no-hit run?

Not exactly interesting TAS material. Then again, it could be really easy to do if you can copy every day. Maybe it's possible to manipulate the weather and make it rain every day so you wouldn't have to water. I bet if you planned it out you wouldn't need to use the hot springs to make a million in two years. But you might need it early on to fill the barn early. Anyway, let's take a guess here: First spring and summer the goal is to get enough for 12 cows. You'd have to clear some area, plant grass and crops. Let's assume we can ignore the fencing! If you don't use the hot spring, I'd say about 2 minutes a day and the little guy will be pooped. So 30 days * 2 minutes = 1 hour. For the rest of the game you have to take care of the cows. I'd say about 1 minute to brush, talk to and feed 12 cows * about 180 days = about three hours of dairy time. Well, at some point you'll make the million and you can stop. Farming the second year is big money since you have better tools and the horse. But best case is that it rains every day. So let's say only about 10 or 20 minutes. So the wild guess here is around four hours of repetitive tasks. Wow, sounds pretty neat!

Well, I'm not sure it will be more interesting. I kill almost every enemy ASAP vs having to do different moves to dodge them. Though it is a bit faster, it's sometimes subtle and hard to tell. For example, in the second-last area of level 1 I stop to take out the two little creepers. This saves about a second and a half even though it seems slow to stop, crouch and whip. However, killing all the rolling eyeballs on the long bridge section of level 2 saved about 18 seconds which is very noticable.

I have decided to work on this game. So far I have done the first level and beat MattyXB's submission by 144 frames. Lag reduction, mostly. I think I can do even better so I will try again and post the first level. My thoughts are that this will be a take-almost-no-damage and kill-almost-every-enemy run. Why? The game lags badly so killing enemies really speeds things up. Stopping and whipping often saves time! Now the fireball whip can kill small enemies from a distance and bigger enemies fast, reducing lag even more. So in many cases I think the lag reduction from this will outweigh getting hit--definitely through most of the first level. Each level needs to be analyzed separately. A big timesaver is definitely having at least one powerup on reaching the boss. On the first level it saves quite a bit of time to shoot down the flashing boss summon orb with the fireball, so I think finishing the level fully powered is a must. On the second level it might be fine to have just one orb since you can predict where the next thing will pop out from. Update: Ok, done with level 1: http://home.comcast.net/~f_amoroso/CastlevaniaAdventure-TheAxeManv0.4.vbm Overall about 3 seconds faster than Matty. I take one hit which is about all that's possible for the first level. Most of the time saved is lag reduction. The boss didn't want to behave so I had to wait a bit before picking up his orb. Not sure if there is a better way to manipulate things in this game.

I watched and found this quite entertaining. It's also very fast with quite a few neat tricks. 2 players would have been cool but very hard to make. There doesn't seem to be any reason to keep recording after beating the climbing brain. You have plenty of time to play around earlier in the game. Resubmit with the input ending as soon as possible and I'll vote yes. Nibelung, the rock may be boring, but it gives you the most shots on the brain and therefore the fastest kill. You could get close with some of the other attacks, but probably not quite as good.

Well, I watched this after never seeing this game before. The game looks pretty bad but the run is good as far as I can tell. Since I was in the mood for it, there was enough to keep me entertained enough for 11 minutes. I can imagine this run being fascinating if I was experienced at the game, but it doesn't look like that would include many people in the world.

Say, has anyone tried avoiding fights on the outer world with save-reset-load? Seems to me that it would be faster than running. Does the SMV format allow recording reset or power switch?
