Ok, I finally got around to watching Erim's WIP and of course it was even more amazing than I had thought. I do have one idea to avoid extra steps before you fight the rhodox. You could get off of a chocobo earlier to add steps without having to add extra pacing steps. You'd have to plan pretty far ahead and it could get complicated. The veldt is different so I'm not sure if there's any way you could get to the rhodox leap fight. Otherwise this looks totally sweet and I can't wait to see this finished no matter who finishes first.

How about that? The discussion is good, it seems there are many others all over the world in the same boat. Also, with the size of the /. audience this will definitely reach quite a few people at Google. Now if we can get some mainstream US press then we are guaranteed they will fix things...

I've seen this too, playing on an actual NES. Perhaps we've still just scratched the surface of all the glitches available in this game.

http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/04/30/194205 The article is about an RBI Baseball video made to match an inning from a historical World Series game. Then he combined the voice broadcast with the video of the NES game. It mentions emulation and hints at re-recording which is how I would assume this is done. Part of the story is about how he got a job out of it. Does anyone here put their TAS runs on their resume?

Dude, with magician mode you start with all the cards. So you could warp to Drac right away and save tons of time! You would save even more time by not needing to use the DSS glitch. Drac would take more hits because you have less strength but I don't think it would add more time than what's saved by starting out with the cards.

I love watching games with pretty graphics, partly because I have my computer hooked up to my very nice plasma tv. Of course I love a lot of the popular ones mentioned but there are a couple lower-profile runs I particularly like: -Umihari Kawase, because the game is really cool and has a lot of entertainment possibilities. -Gunstar Heroes - I know nothing about this game but it is visually stunning with a great soundtrack and the run is just nonstop action of different varieties. I do enjoy watching some of my own runs, especially Ninja Gaiden 3 when I want to get pumped up.

Hmm, I never saw any of the actual algorithms, but my understanding is that the saw is supposed to instakill an enemy if: 1. You hit, based on an agility roll. 2. Your strength is less than their defense. Most people consider this a glitch since the designers probably intended the opposite.

Well, I think I'm going to give up, I just don't have the patience to manipulate this game's luck at all. I think it would really take a bot to do well, though it would be neat. Here's what I have so far: http://home.comcast.net/~f_amoroso/ffl-TheAxeManv0.1.vbm I got to the fourth main world, to the power plant scene. The watcher here is pretty resistant but can be stoned. Also, I have tested many frames on the reset and _never_ seen SAW work. One possibility is swapping out a character in a world four guild and picking up a more powerful female mutant with 52 agility. If necessary, a female human could be picked and pumped with potions to whatever agility is needed to hit. Luck manipulation is very difficult in this game. The only time you can change luck every frame is on reset, which makes it slow to test many frames by hand. It sometimes seems to be possible to change the enemy's action by changing yours but usually they'll do the same thing. In general I end up switching the order of the party or their equipment in anticipation of how things will turn out. So to get something low probability to happen is pretty tough for me.

Hmm, I was thinking the same thing as Mart. After a lot of initial interest it looks like this has been lost in the queue. You could at least mark the decision if you've decided to accept it. Well, it's bad karma to bump myself, so I'll balance it out by offering this outtake. Enjoy!

Wow, it doesn't seem like getting all treasures will set this run back far at all. Everything looks very smooth, but you know what I think about not taking hits. I do have a question about item management, why don't you drop all the herbs and load up the inventory with red jewels? In at least one of the towns you are bound to run close by Gem and you could give him the entire load to avoid releasing each one individually.

I had another idea as to what might make it appear that a bot is clicking links. Has anyone else tried the fasterfox extension to Firefox? I have been using it at home for a while now. Despite being popular it's now frowned upon by many so I might get rid of it. Anyway, one of its features is to preload links on a page which could appear as if a bot is loading the ad.

This is a neat game and very original for a shooter, but just not right for a TAS. I actually own the cartridge and have played through it on console, but I don't think I'd want to watch a TAS. The different dragon powers are pretty cool though.

This is frickin awesome! I would kill off my party members to save time though, as you might guess from my other runs. :) Kutan standing in for Celes is hilarious. When he temporarily turned into a human for the Opera it reminded me of that movie where Geena Davis does a makeover on three big hairy aliens and they turn out to be Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans. ("Earth Girls are Easy")

Well, I watched the WIP and I'm very impressed, especially by how easily you were able to clear out those fatties! Hope I get to see the rest of this sweet game.

Great job and congratulations on being the first to ever beat one of my runs. I suspected the airwalk glitch might be more useful but never did the work to figure it out, so this definitely deserves to be published. One thing that I wonder about improving is the key. Why not make the key while doing the airwalk in the cave and carry it the rest of the way? It seems you could save time by doing it there since you have to wait anyway.

Except in some games you must press start for two frames and other times you can start faster by pressing start two or more times in a particular pattern. A bot which could see through this would be even better. I think frame search has to do with memory addresses, so it's easier to implement but much harder to use than the proposed pixelbot. This is an instance where a human does a task much differently than a program. A human looks at the screen to see if pressing start at a particular frame worked. A bot would prefer to check memory addresses, but these need to be determined. I've wondered how tough it would be to write a program that could read the screen and use that to generate the input. Then instead of disassembling the program you could use your empirical knowledge about what inputs to use. This would be particularly useful for Final Fantasy since a bot could probably cut out quite a bit of luck manipulation time. In RPGs where I need to rerecord many times for luck manipulation I have my keyboard layout set up and my hands trained. I can use frame advance, rerecords and fast-forward to test each possibility in under a second, but there are hundreds of possibilities to test! A bot could do this much faster and wouldn't have to worry about his hands getting sore.

In a highly optimized run with lots of competition maybe it's a good idea to get every second, but when it's over an hour I don't think it's such a big deal. When the text scrolls by line instead of by character and the only advantage is how fast you can enter your name then putting in a good name should be done. It also depends on the game and what kind of style you are going for. I used one char for DW2 because it is displayed one char/frame many times, but I made an inside joke by giving him the same name as the DW1 run. In Final Fantasy, you must enter four characters per name. They are displayed throughout every battle, so it would be very annoying to stare at AAAA/BBBB/CCCC/DDDD for an hour. So again I made a joke out of it which FF fans should appreciate. My upcoming test run of Final Fantasy Legend will have the most interesting names yet, I'll keep it a surprise until I'm done.

The diagonals work on 1D menus too. It's faster because I can just alternate between the diagonals instead of adding in empty frames. But it seems to take extra frames to scroll the menu down, oh well. World 2 went very fast because there was only one required fight--Sei-Ryu. Since I don't have to spend money on anything else, I had no problem picking up a book of STONE. I have to say, even with very low stats the success rate is pretty good. This turns my party into killing machines which should have no problem taking out most enemies. This is nice because there are quite a few required fights in world 3. Beat Byakko at about 23 minutes. So far so good, but I'm sure there are several minutes of improvement here. It will be interesting to see how tough it is to finish this.

Is there a difference between Aeolus shield and expel? Did you try expel on all the bosses?

I think it might be good to add a discussion on luck manipulation. It would be interesting to many that Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy can also be the subject of a TAS.

Don't you also need to come in at night to get the metorite armband, which is also way out of the way? In fact, you need to solve the sliding rock puzzle to get that and you can just walk in and grab the wizard ring. Also, even if it can break, I bet you can work it out so that between healing, running and wizard ring you will always have some option to avoid fighting. Without it you will probably not have enough MP to cast heal as much as you'd like and buying medical herbs is very slow.

How easy is it to manipulate which enemy group is encountered? It may not be possible to make a particular enemy group appear, which would make things much more difficult.

Ok, I am making a run at this game, just a test for now. POWER is definitely the way to go, I was able to finish the first world in under 10 minutes by manipulating someone in a four-mutant party to get the POWER ability and using it to beat all the bosses. Now that I look a little harder at things, there is a SAW in a treasure chest that I can just pick up and use, but it's after world 3. That's fine, I should be able to beat Sei-ryu with POWER and in world 3 I can pick up STONE (though money might be a problem). That and POWER should be enough to beat the fights I have to, then I'll get SAW to use too. Between STONE and SAW I can beat any enemy in one hit including all the bosses. I discovered that the menu cursor can be moved faster by pressing diagonals. Save/soft-reset/reload is the only good way to manipulate luck. The seed is set on the reset so luck is manipulated by picking which frame to do the A-B-Start-Select soft reset. The steps to next encounter can be set this way, so a well optimized run would always get a very long walk between saves. This is also how I was able to get POWER and beat all bosses without anyone dying (yet!) This is going pretty fast so I'll try to get to the end before I post anything.

This looks good, this should be a pretty easy TAS. The glitch looks neat, you should definitely show it off. What about hunter gun, would that be any faster? I guess if you can nail every shot then spread is better for sure, but having every shot hit without aiming lets you keep firing while dodging which may give it an advantage.
