The seppuku move is absolutely hilarious. Enough for me to vote yes for a 2-minute movie.

Very nice! A great improvement that has been needed for a long time. Smart planning and use of lots of different powers (almost all of them) make this a really good watch.

An obscure and complicated game done quickly with a really nice commentary explaining everything. Very nice. You should put the ending stats in the submission text, it might be interesting.

Very good. Great update on an oldie but goodie. I wonder how fish leg stew tastes?

Looks nicely done. Nightmare Land is the most interesting part of the game anyway.

I don't think you can be permanently barred from Avatarhood. But you lose 10 of every virtue each time so you can dig yourself pretty deep pretty fast. If you don't know what actions raise what virtues you can wander around for a long time without making progress.

Great run, lots of clever tricks. Very glad that you saw this through to the end. I thought a 100% run would reset and fight the Dark Demon. On other emulators it's pretty simple to record resets and many runs do so. Last I checked BizHawk didn't handle them yet though. Though the newgame+ idea sounds interesting too.

Ah, looks painful. While everyone figures that out maybe we can mention that youtube is missing the commentary in the little note at the bottom of the movie description. Good luck sorting out Google's changes.

Bumping this again because youtube is still missing the commentary! Please get that up, it should make this long and complicated run much more interesting and understandable.

It looks like most screen transitions get an intentional delay for luck manipulation. A trick like that might still help though.

It looks like the subs are in the video files but still not on youtube.

Thanks, FatRatKnight! The display on that script is pretty cool. While making the run I just used memory watch but this is much prettier. And it does the dungeon lights too.

It would be nice for the main youtube video to have lit dungeons. Not that much time is spent there but without the light it's a confusing black screen.

Thank you Samsara! Somehow some of the subtitles got skipped but it doesn't seem to have been that many. I'm glad everyone likes the subtitles. There was some great feedback about the commentary on some of my earlier runs so I decided it is really a must on longer RPG runs. About the PC version, I am certain it is possible to TAS in a fraction of the time of the NES version simply because there is no movement animation. However I am also certain that many of the internals are different and a lot of new tricks will be needed. A lot depends on how the RNG works. If anyone wants to give it a try on dosbox I think it would neat to see too.

Now that you mention it, 'glitched' is probably not the best description. How about 'memory corruption'? I would propose this becomes the new any% and the current run becomes 'any% no corruption'. Though "Die Hard" is not a bad idea either. :)

I thought encoders had tools to autoconvert subtitles from fm2 and other movie files. If there is anything I can do to help please let me know.

I'd like to pester about that too. The lua script should be easy but I imagine my novel-size commentary takes time to process.

The subtitles in the fm2...
Thanks, I'm glad you liked them. For me the Ultima series was something I grew up with. Now it's making me feel old because there hasn't been a real Ultima game in over 15 years, too long for many here to remember. To young people today video games have always had a fairly broad level of acceptance as legitimate media for art and culture. That is only the case because the hard work and imagination that went into these games helped reinvent the industry after the great video game crash.

I would recommend downloading an fm2 that has them for an example. Open it in a text editor and you'll see the format is really simple. Here is one: #4606: TheAxeMan's NES Ultima: Quest of the Avatar in 58:23.98

Very good. Good planning and analysis. The jump kick is pretty cool. This would make a really great run without the time-padding sections but there's nothing you can do about that. If you are interested in the plot then this is what you want.

Done. That was actually pretty well optimized, I only found 5 more frames of improvement.

verify pending run?
The run has several soft resets but in this case no precision is necessary. If anyone gets all the hardware it should be possible to figure something out.

Thanks Atma. Watching on emulator is always a good idea but the encoders can easily put the fm2 subtitles in the video. It worked really well on my Final Fantasy run. I think a lot of the problems came in creating the NES port. The original version had a lot more talking to people so there was usually someone who would give you a pretty clear explanation. Plus it wasn't translated to Japanese and then back to English.

You lose virtue by selling items?
First, you can only sell weapons and armor but nothing that actually shows up in the item list. You only lose virtue if you ask for too much. Otherwise you actually gain virtue. That does have a cooldown though. Thing is, talking with the tree and campfire is faster. I did consider using shops like that but it doesn't work out as well as the little grind at Serpent's Hold. The shops have a lot of dialog and it takes time to walk around town. Plus I need the fights for Valor anyway. The cooldown for the beggar only applies to Compassion so you could get more Sacrifice without leaving town. That wouldn't really help though since you need both. There are a lot of details about the virtue system on the games resources page and the addresses are there too so you can set a memwatch and see how things affect them.

That Lua script has broken the page width
Seems that the %%SRC_EMBED%% macro doesn't mesh with the conversion from submission formatting to the forums. The submission itself looks fine though. Switched to just preformatted text.

nearly impossible to follow what's going on
Most of the time the pace is slow enough that you can tell what is going on at any particular time. It's seeing how everything fits together that is probably tough. Hopefully the commentary helps.
