20 minutes is a little too long. it's better to just do a couple of random encounters and you level up enough to beat the dragon easily.
Well there was actually a lot of wasted time. I'd say realistically that can be done all in the span of 5 to 7 minutes. First and foremost he got far too much Potch. He really only needed a few thousand to buy what he actually got. Also, depending on what encounter he uses to actually gain his levels he might not even need new armor and he could, in theory, gain more than 20 levels. I think the Bandits on the eastern mountain (I can't recall it's name) are worth more exp. than the enemies he used, though I could be wrong... and, if anything, the enemies on the western mountain certainly have to be worth more. Either way, I look forward to seeing a TAS of either of the Suikodens.

That C&H strip is all the better if you've seen the few strips that come before it. ^_^

People thought this game was hard? Huh. You learn something new every day. It'd certainly make for a good TAS though. I doubt it'd be too long either... at least compared to watching every LotR movie back to back (especially when you consider they are making two more LotR movies).

I have to disagree. I've personally used that to great effect. Try having the slot 4 person use a Knife as an item and note what the enemy did and the damage the attack did. Load state and have him use Clothing as an item, jot down what happened. Then use Temper and once again jot it down. At the very least the damage done will vary. Either way, the RNG isn't very flexible and most of the RNG manipulation will be frame battle entered. I've tested it against Lich before and totally prevented her from doing anything but attack. Oh, and on that note, enemies have three kinds of attacks. Attacks, Magic and specials. Attacks and specials can be used freely but magic always follows a set pattern. Lich's first spell will always be Blizzara for example. But if Lich knew a special move she may use it first... not including attacks she may use, of course.

What an enemy does in battle is determined by two things; 1 - the frame the battle was entered in. 2 - the choice of actions your team inputs on any given turn. When doing testing for the plausability of the solo thief lowest level challenge I discovered that I could manipulate Garland into missing by changing the actions I did. So while using an attack would get me killed using a potion would make garland miss. From what I noticed the game categorizes things into "weapon, armor, item and accessory" but no further. So Dagger and Mythril Sword invoked the same RNG values. However, I didn't test that a lot... so it may look at any item used. This not only decides what actions the enemy takes it also decides what stats you gain upon level up. You would ideally want to have your characters gain a fair number of 20+ hp level ups while the monk should also gain stamina and agility upon every level. On that note, never use his weapons... not even while level 1. So, yeah, anyway... you won't want to sell off your starting equipment. In fact, you probably won't need to buy equips for anyone. I found that evade is much more valued since the things that can hit you tend to kill you outright, like Kraken, and the things that use magic are put at a disadvantage with selective leveling for hp/curtains from the ship game.

Sami, I just wanted to say that out of all the runs on this site; this is the one I'm looking forward to the most. The WIPs have all been great. Keep it up!

Okay, so here's what I suggest. The team should be Monk and three black magi. You will want to use the ship game at least twice (possibly three) to get yourself a Cockatrice Claw (can't recall what rank awards them). With frame advance you could easily beat the puzzle in 3 seconds or less. You'll want to use this on Astos to kill him in one turn. The time gained should outweigh the time spent. You'll probably also want to get two Blue Fangs to use on the Piscodemons. I suggest having the Magi use them and I suggest fighting 4 of them to get more exp without spending any time fighting random crap. Naturally this should be tested to see if any time is saved at all. Later on in the game most of your troubles can be avoided by taking a trip to the caravan and investing in some of the stat boosting items he sells. Instead of spending god knowns how many fights grinding you could spend one turn having your team use Giants Tonic to increase your max HP by 200 a pop. I actually see no real reason to get into any random fights in the whole run. In fact, aside from Temper, Haste, and possibly Sleep (for the 9 pirates) I see no reason for any other spells because they do so very little damage and take so long to cast. You could check out my guide at GameFAQs for some more possible ideas. http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/file/920240/35878 Aside from covering all the bosses up to class change in the lowest level it also lists every item in the game that can boost stats and exactly by how much they boost them in case you don't already know. On that note, I highly suggest that you do NOT class change because it doesn't help at all with levels as low as you'll undoubtedly have. Trust me when I say that optional level grinding isn't needed. I've beaten the game with a solo lowest level thief unclasschanged and even Chaos posed little threat with the proper planning. With three BMs to back you up you'll also not need to worry about assloads of curing like a solo challenge so Chaos should drop in about 5 to 6 well manipulated turns. Oh, and have you figured out how to abuse the RNG in and out of battle yet?

Yeah, the PoP is probably worthless. If I remember correctly the previous run used a Monk and three Black Mages and the only extra work he was really planning was using the ship game to win a few very handy items. I'd highly suggest looking over that topic in full. (This was my first post on this site in damn near a year. *sad*)

I think those good old fashion monks said it the best when they said "..." when asked about the existance or nonexistance of God. That's the best argument for either side I've heard yet.

It's kept track of in the fact that there's a boulder outside.
Yes, that was my point. I was being heavily sarcastic when I said to not kill Grunty. I'm just annoyed at the people who think that 100% should be changed if something isn't fun.

That's a horrible guideline to go by. For example, what someone said earlier of the game keeping track of every chest and boulder in OoT. Using your rules, the 100% run would be in the double digits of hours. Unwatchable and pointless. It's not so extreme with this game, but I still don't see any entertainment value in getting the extra tokens. I would personally rather see an all jiggy run. It sounds the most entertaining. Either that or an any%.
Otherwise it's not 100%. <- That was my point. What was yours exactly? That just because something isn't fun or takes any amount of time that it should be ignored? I mean, hell, killing Grunty isn't kept track of in the sub-menu. Is it? Let's just skip that fight because it takes too long and I find it boring. Is that what you would find acceptable? I mean really the only thing that changes is a boulder outside of Banjo's house and maybe a few dialog changes. Oh, and I, for one, enjoy seeing 100% runs with my standards met. In my opinion if this game gets a "100%" run done that I could stop right before Grunty and then I could go back into a few levels and actually get stuff the player missed I wouldn't have much respect for whoever it was claiming a "world record 100% run" that I just proved was not actually 100%. I guess my general point is this: What happens in games like Star Ocean 3? The battle trophies would CLEARLY be part of a 100% run. Yet some would literally take days to get. Chances are a 100% run wouldn't be made, of course. Or people with low standards would change the rules and redfine the words "100 percent". So, please, you people asking for a 100% run, accept what 100% means or request an any% run. Do not ask for a 100% run sans a few things that would take too long and you would find boring. That's all I'm asking.

So Sami should get all gold feathers, red feathers, eggs, and health in every level?
Personally I would collect them only under one condition. Do they respawn? If they do not respawn then they should be collected. If they respawn when you leave the level or reset the system then they can be avoided since you would be unable to prove you have collected them. Otherwise, get them or do not call your run a 100% run. This site seems to host technical demos, minimalist, 100% and fastest. Fastest being a main part of every video here. Sami should make a run that falls into one of those two (minimalist or 100%) and strive to be as fast as possible. He shouldn't, however, claim 100% if he missed something that the game has went out of its way to keep track of. In my opinion the only grey area is the cheats. Since he would have to list "uses cheats" and some people might say "eww" for that. Still, I should make this clear, I'm not saying that his video SHOULD grab everything and anything. I'm just saying he shouldn't try to claim he has done a 100% run when people who do 100% runs of games would disagree. I, having done a 100% run (not aming for fastest time... just casually), for a LOT of games have very strict guidelines for what should and shouldn't be counted. THis can be boiled down to one very simple rule. "If the player can change something and the game can never change it back (even after a hard reset) then the player should change it." Otherwise it's not 100%.

I fail to see how 100% can mean anything less than collecting 100% of what the game keeps track of. If I remember correctly (and I don't need to remember since I have proof) the game DOES keep track of the Eggs and the Ice Key in the sub-menu. http://www.rare-extreme.com/images/eggs8.jpg Anyway, if you ask me, 100% should be just that. You do 100% of the game. Since this game does have a counter for the mumbo tokens in the sub-menu it should be at it's max (or above max if we can skip any of the transformations and still get everything) and not 0. A normal player wouldn't consider missing 1 of anything a 100% file. Anything that can be collected should be collected. On the subject of cheats; they shouldn't be done IF the game resets them after powering off the system. Even then, only the cheats it does reset upon a hard reset should be avoided. Here are the cheats that let you get the eggs and the ice key. ICE KEY: CHEAT NOW YOU CAN SEE A NICE ICE KEY WHICH YOU CAN HAVE FOR FREE PINK EGG: CHEAT OUT OF THE SEA IT RISES TO REVEAL MORE SECRET PRIZES GREEN EGG: CHEAT AMIDST THE HAUNTED GLOOM A SECRET IN THE BATHROOM LIGHTBLUE EGG: CHEAT DONT YOU GO AND TELL HER ABOUT THE SECRET IN HER CELLAR BLUE EGG: CHEAT A DESERT DOOR OPENS WIDE ANCIENT SECRETS WAIT INSIDE YELLOW EGG: CHEAT NOW BANJO WILL BE ABLE TO SEE IT ON NABNUTS TABLE RED EGG: CHEAT THIS SECRET YOULL BE GRABBIN IN THE CAPTAINS CABIN

Such a great game. Ahh, good times. Good times. Not sure how a TAS of it would be though. Most of that games charm comes from actually playing it. Could be cool though.

No, I wouldn't "want" to and I certainly don't want or expect it to get published. However, I'm a fan of lowest level things and I can respect the challenge for what it's worth. I'd like to see it just to have seen it. Not because I think it'll be the next Lord of the Rings but because it's something to kill some time and something I may even try in real time eventually. IF it is made, however, I wouldn't want it to be a minimalist run. I'd like to see all bossed completed in the best order to show each boss completed at an idealy lowest level taking into consideration the bosses level in comparion to the players. No warping through L-Space (Discworld joke) and fighting bosses in an order to speed up earlier boss fights by having stronger weapons than should otherwise be possible. Who knows... maybe I'm just weird like that.

I think its at least worth seeing. I tried the same thing earlier this year with SotN.. but since you level up freakishly fast just off of boss exp. it really didn't even make a 4 level difference by the end.

Hey, thats the same thing im using. Neat! How does yours work for you? Mine has a tendancy to not let me let the analog idle... always pulls to the right. Also the dpad is an analog in disguise, I think. Because it's hard to press right without also pressing up or down too.

So that's why I'd like if someone could counterargue my reason for the rule Samurai Goroh was referring to.
I don't think there should be any counter arguments at all... it's like you said. Also, it's basically the same reason SRAM was such a big deal. How do we know that the timings and the RNG aren't changed to a point of impossibility? A patch feels just like a cheat code to me... if we can't trust submitted SRAM files how can we trust what an IPS file does to the game? It would be very easy for the file to change many things we don't know about. Take the FF6 patch for example, it can fix many bugs like the Evade glitch and the Cyan glitch. Besides, English isn't the only language out there... I'm sure we have many viewers coming to this site that can only speak Japanese and it honestly wouldn't be cool to say "Yeah, this video uses a hacked ROM to display things in English, rather than Japanese, because we out number you."

I have sort of the same problem with that Avi. The video is very jumpy in all of my video players and in some it's even upside down. I know, for certain, that I have the correct codecs as well.

I didn't say they claimed to have beaten the record. I said when a record IS beaten. My point was that when a record is broke people ask for proof. This was done. Then you recieved an answer... you instantly dismissed it and called him a liar. For a record in sports to be broken, for a long time (maybe even still today), all you needed was a "witness" to your accomplishment. Hardly proof if you ask me... but it WAS, and maybe even still is, accepted.
