Would it be okay if it were not a speedrun or done with tool assistance but just a VBM of an ordinary 100% playthrough, even if such a run ended up being about a day long? I might try doing this (or at least just getting all of the cards), eschewing my typical strategy of powerleveling in order to make the total play time shorter so that the VBM would fit on Microstorage. Also, what is needed is a verifiable save *file* like what the emulator produces when using the in-game save feature.

That was more a joke than an actual statement of hate. Notably, the manipulation is pretty bad, it requires opening the 'item screen' so that the RNG moves. However, I was considering a 1-star New Game+, where I've already obtained all the cards. IIRC, Mawlock joins the team before the first battle after your first playthrough, and the card system is highly abusable. That said, I'm glad everyone is enjoying this run.
Opening the Status screen with R while at initial position also moves the RNG, but anyway, now that I'm actually bothering to use the cards this go-round, I see how they can be abused: Imagine using a Turbo Pepper on Hanzou and giving him the Agility Ring, and then equipping Mawlock with the Max, Kokichi, Hanzou and Mawlock cards, so that for each battle, you can give Hanzou, then Kokichi, then Max another turn, then use the Mawlock card to reset all other used cards, then give Hanzou, Kokichi, and Max yet another turn; this means that Hanzou, Kokichi, and Max will each get to strike thrice when most enemies only move once!

After that game piqued my interest again, I remembered an exchange in the submission thread for Shining Soul in 49:46.88 by DarkKobold: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=235441#235441

I'll mention some things that I've found while playing the game, focusing on important differences from the original Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention... The RNG can also be moved by opening the status screen with the R button while the character is at initial position. The annoying feature of experience resetting to 0 on level-up no longer exists: Now, as in Shining Force II, experience is carried over. In addition to the excellent new characters, there are some interesting new weapons, most of which are especially powerful against particular classes of enemy. With the Item Box (and the fact that equipped weapons and accessories no longer take up Item space), you never have to worry about filling up your item capacity; also if Narsha, Zuika, or Mawlock decides to "Remove" an item while in battle, it will go into the Item Box and then be accessible to the main force even before these new characters are acquired (this is helpful for getting those Shower Cures early and selling off Narsha's first Mace for quick cash). Bleu is heavily nerfed. The soldiers in Guardiana now stationarily block the exit at first, so the trick to get into Battle 1 with just Max no longer works. It is harder than before to get Yogurt (only useful for the 100% run). In Alterone just before the end of Chapter 1, if you talk to the King before pulling on the hidden chain, the screen will pan over to where the chain is; the original did not give this clue, confusing players who were looking for an actual statue rather than a wall mount. There is much more dialogue, to fill out the backstory, and there are many more cutscenes; Paopigs are shown to be much more central to the people of Rune than in the original game, and the hero is no longer a silent protagonist. Beneficial spells and items now show their effects on the battle map, not in the cutscene playing beforehand. Character classes are no longer shown in the small HUD during battle, but only in the Status screen; also they are no longer abbreviated to 4 characters. You can only talk to two characters when Old Gert turns you into a chicken; Arthur isn't one of them, even though in the original he had something funny to say. Some of the treasure chests have been removed from battle areas, like the battle in Alterone, even if they are accessible outside of battle; also, opening a chest no longer ends a turn. The enemies now have levels, and you cannot access the Status screen for an enemy unless you have attacked at least one of that type in that battle; now some enemies of a certain type are weaker than others, like the Skeleton in the Cave of Darkness is stronger than those at Shade Abbey. There is now a clear bonus for most battles, the win condition(s) are clearly shown beforehand, and you can rearrange your team before each battle starting with the Marionette, who now has Freeze 4 and is still grossly overpowered. The order in which you add members to the fighting party in the Team menu influences their initial positions in the battle; this can be used to your advantage. The hero now learns Supernova instead of Bolt; characters now gain a "Magic Resistance" stat, but only if they also use magic, and the general trends in stat growth are available in characters' Status pages. Characters can now equip more than one ring at a time; one important ring now available in Chapter 2, the Charm Ring, imparts additional magic resistance, even to characters that normally have none. Perhaps most importantly: If you hold down the B button while walking around and not in battle, you run.

Is there anything in this game that's nearly as funny as Miss Cloud from FFVII? I mean I never actually played that game either, but I read about it on the Internets.

I personally prefer simple nearest-neighbor upscaling when I run games in an emulator; sure it looks a little fuzzier, but it's not as blocky as straight magnification or as wobbly and processor-intensive as the more sophisticated algorithms tend to be, and it also works well with anti-aliased pixel art.

If there were an easier way, we would have told you by now; perhaps the latest Flash Player Projector could help: http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html There are also free screen-recording programs, like CamStudio for Windows: http://camstudio.org/

Let's say you're trying to check, by visual inspection, the presence of property P in a population, which is widely known to be randomly dispersed in a portion p with 0<p<1/2 of the population; property P is itself not readily visible, but property Q is, it is known to be randomly dispersed in a portion q with 0<p<q<1/2 of the population, and those with property q have property P at a rate r with p<r<p/q that is not widely known. What is the difference between labeling (1) everyone by default as ~P, (2) p of the population randomly as P, (3) those (and only those) with property Q as P, or (4) r of those with Q and (p-rq)/(1-q) of those with ~Q randomly as P (obviously only works if r is known)? I'll go ahead and try to answer this, because it has implications for social issues like "gaydar" and racial profiling. (1) false-positive (FP): 0, false-negative (FN): p, total error (ER): p (2) FP: (1-p)p, FN: (1-p)p, ER: 2(1-p)p (3) FP: (1-r)q, FN: p-rq, ER: p+q (4) FP: (1-r)rq+(1-q-p+rq)(p-rq)/(1-q), FN: (1-r)rq+(1-q-p+rq)(p-rq)/(1-q), ER: 2(1-r)rq+2(1-q-p+rq)(p-rq)/(1-q) The expressions for (1) are obvious, and (3) is fairly simple too (portion of (Q and ~P), and portion of P minus portion of (Q and P)); (2) arises from incorrectly classifying p of the ~P potion as P and incorrectly classifying (1-p) of the P portion as ~P, and (4) is similar, applied to both the Q and ~Q portions (and using the readily-verified fact that if r of the Q portion is P, then (p-rq)/(1-q) of the ~Q portion is P, because p-rq is the (P and ~Q) portion and 1-q is the ~Q portion). Surprisingly, (3), equivalent to brazen racial profiling or assuming that gay=swishy, has a higher total error rate than (1), equivalent to giving the benefit of doubt or using the presumption of heteronormativity, even though it does have a slightly smaller rate of false negatives. Also, going at random (2) is more error-prone (difference between (1) and (2) is 2p^2-p=(2p-1)p<0 because 0<p<1/2), although once again it has a lower false-negative rate. Meanwhile, as expected, (4), equivalent to more nuanced attempts at racial profiling or "gaydar," is less error-prone than (1), as can be proven by taking the derivative of the difference expression with respect to r and testing the limit as r->p. Of course, the question must be asked: Is it fair? To determine this, let's compare the portions of the Q and ~Q groups who are also P, that are detected as such. (1) Q: 0 ~Q: 0 (2) Q: p ~Q: p (3) Q: 1 ~Q: 0 (4) Q: r ~Q: (p-rq)/(1-q) The fairest one is actually (2), even though (4) may seem better at first glance; as r increases over p, more of the Q who are P get caught, while more of the ~Q who are P get away with it. However, it is not hard to see that those are also the portions of the Q and ~Q groups who are actually ~P, but still detected as P; by that measure, (1) is the fairest and (4) is even more appalling. The most surprising thing of all is that (4) is both more effective and less fair as r increases, so the arguments of both conservatives in favor of, and liberals in opposition to, racial profiling have merit.

Surely the biggest reason of all would be a game that doesn't emulate properly?
More generally, it's the lack of an emulator of sufficient quality that possesses the tools necessary to assist the speedrun.

That's what I got, but I was unnerved because its degree in y wasn't less than 2, the degree of the denominator; it looks even worse when you consider the similar problem (15x2-y2)/(x+y) because the smallest remainder I could find was still 14y2 and that has an even higher degree than the denominator!

You don't need Swedish to live and work in Finland. The amount of people living in Finland who speak only Swedish and do not speak Finnish nor English is a very small minority, and it makes no sense to force everybody to study the language just because of them.
That reminds me of the status of Spanish in America; although in most areas the government is required to ensure that people can access services regardless of what languages they know, and the most common minority language by far is Spanish, the only part of the United States where children are compulsorily taught Spanish is Puerto Rico, and elsewhere there are usually ESL classes for kids with poor or absent knowledge of English, and Spanish is the most commonly taken foreign-language class by native English speakers in high school, but the only language that children must learn is English.

Try this on for size: Using whatever means you can think of, find the smallest remainder in (15x4-y2)/(x2+y)

In the last few years, updates to Windows Movie Maker have made it impossible to use to any movie files that use FFDShow codecs: in short, if it's not .wma, .wmv or .wav, it won't play. If you try to open, say, a DivX or H264 file in Movie Maker, it crashes. The best way to circumvent this is to download the FFDshow codec pack, which will automatically run whenever a program which doesn't support abnormal codecs, like Windows Movie Maker or Windows Media Player, tries to run these files. It won't prevent crashing, but it will certainly decrease the number of crashes you'll encounter
That's a horribly outdated version; a better idea is to use the latest SVN of ffdshow-tryout, and even better is to bundle it with a few other codecs that FFDShow doesn't support, in the K-Lite Codec Pack... Mega: http://codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm 64-bit addon (64-bit operating systems only): http://codecguide.com/klcp_64bit.htm The K-Lite Codec Pack will even detect broken DirectShow filters and disable them, so you'll be able to open nearly any video smoothly.

IIRC the two external PS/2 ports go to the same part of the motherboard internally; for this reason, sometimes apparent errors with the mouse are actually errors with the keyboard and vice-versa.

My laptop is a bit more powerful and NSMBWii still has a lot of lag: AMD Athlon II P320 dual-core 2.10GHz 8GB of PC3-10800 1333MHz DDR3 RAM ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 with 256MB of VRAM Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 ...still hasn't stopped me from getting a Bluetooth adapter, a Wiimote, a Classic Controller, and a wireless IR bar; the knockoff products altogether cost me about $50. Also, to find out more about your setup, download and run Speccy; also both CPU-Z and GPU-Z may help.

That sounds like a very different standard from the original forums, where broken English is okay as long as it gets the point across.

for some reason I thought "her" was being used as a direct object (accusative case) rather than indirect (dative case) and now that you told me what you told me, it does look a bit more analogous to Spanish (accusative third-person pronouns are "lo/la/los/las" and dative third-person pronouns are "le/les" except that if both are used, the latter is replaced by the reflexive third-person dative/accusative pronoun "se")

In English, grammatical gender is almost always restricted to living things with distinct sexes (and even then, animals are often referred to with "it" rather than "he" or "she"); even though my best guess is that you referred to the feminine "integral" (same spelling in English, but slightly different pronunciation), in this case the correct translation of "lhe" would be "it" rather than "her" P.S.: I don't actually have a deep understanding of Portuguese, but I do know Spanish well and I used Google Translate and sometimes Wiktionary to test any similarities I thought were there, like I thought the word for "her" in the accusative case would be either "la" or "a" but it's not quite so analogous. Also here is a suitable Google link for the translation I gave you; I had just earlier used the very well-written definition you gave, without relying on a Portuguese-English dictionary, but I wanted to see what Google said.

Keep going on; I realize the questions sound monotonous but I think they're put there for consistency, like to weed out people who aren't taking the survey seriously. I liked the questions about behavior toward men who act feminine and women who act masculine; the gender police are known to be prone to brutality. By the way, I wonder how the questions would change if I had said I were a trans person (and also why they didn't say "cis man" and "cis woman" instead of just "man" and "woman" as if trans men weren't really men and trans women weren't really women).
