Just a heads up, that you probably already know, but you can double damage boost up the laval waterfall in LLL. That may prove faster for something in the future.
I didnt know there were waterfalls made of lava.... Glad to see progress! If things get frustrating just put it down for a bit. Ultimately this should be fun both for you to do and us to watch.

Course 11 Star 6 (Quick Race Through Downtown): Can't collect the star in the cage in the city without the Vanish Cap.
This star has been collected using the chuckya glitch. If you havent seen this check out chuck brights videos at http://www.vortiginous.com/cbright/ You have to take the chuckya throught the loading trigger until he turns into a star. The only star on the city side is the QRTD.

Im not a fan of the strobing (once is enough) but the rest was very good. Very clean and I dont see any obvious improvements.

Hi, it's true that i haven't worked anymore on the run since the last WIP. I don't want to rush things, i am working on some other stuff (some other hobbies too) and will get back to the mario64 run soon when i feel inspired, or else it wouldn't come out as good as i want it to be.
Well the game has been out now for 10 years. I don't think its going anywhere :)

Imprezive shaving of that many seconds. This will IMO be a star run if you keep it up. Just wondering if the 6th coin could have been picked up faster?
Yeah Im wondering how much it is worth running up the spiral more for additional height vs waiting. FODA probably made the right call but its not obvious.

I will try what asteron suggested about the red coin, if it works the level will be very different.
Twiddling both with the height at which I jumped from the pole and the time when I dived got this close without slowdown Im not sure how close this is to the hitbox of the coin... but with frame precision you might be able to knick the corner of it... I think its close but probably not possible ... I was also thinking maybe some kind of jump off the edge of the platform after its tilted on its side might work? I know how important that coin is but am not sure how doable getting it is...

Swimming looks pretty hard to TAS nicely... I saw a few locations where your head bumps into the lip when turning a corner. Kinda stood out for me. Though I think that when mario hits a surface underwater he doesnt lose speed... (at least I remember him simply being pushed onto a tangent velocity vector).... so using walls to turn might even be better.... I also saw a jump that might not be optimal before the bowser fight... on the way to the star you pull yourself onto a wall and long jump.... it looks like it would be better to land on the wall and do a side flip. I could be wrong though but that pull up animation looks slow (and stops your movement). It looks like you hit two snags in Bowser in the Fire Sea. Getting the red coin under the lift and clearing the extending bridge before it gets too low. If you could somehow get that red coin without having to wait for the lift you would be in position to make the jump at the bridge i think... I tried various heights of jumping from the pole and diving and got pretty close but I dont think its possible from there... shame. OOOOO while messing around I did a neat trick in the volcano at LLL... you might already know this but you can LJ into the lavafall and be burned twice (2nd burn at apex of first) and make your way up to the bridge near the star. Frome there you could also jump into the middle and grab the pole... fun.

I thought BBH looks great now too :) I liked that surprise LJ wall kick towards the camera for the star (the three book one). Also that was some fancy footwork diving up the seam to the roof. Keep up the momentum!

I can't imagine a 100% without all 24 heart pieces. The more bombs/more arrows... Im not so sure.

I have 2 vids for you: http://rapidshare.de/files/17923518/2.1.Filimonas_Chip_off_Whomp_s_Block_0.32.zip.html I have no idea, how Myles does a 0:31. http://rapidshare.de/files/17923398/4.5.Filimonas_Snowman_s_Lost_his_Head_0.37.zip.html This is 0:37. Maybe you walk to the snowman later? I don't know if the long jump to the head at the beginning is faster that your dive & slide.
Well that explains the first one. Since it is the first time in that level FODA is slowed down by the tutorial text and doesnt have the Yoshi Jump. The second one though FODA waits until after the 'secret discovered' music before talking to the snowman while you were able to do it before. Im not sure if this can be done the first time for the star though. FODA, if your hexediting with the secret aquarium is successful you might want to revist this one as well.

I have the 31 video, and it doesn't seem optimized either, since he has to longjump to the star at the end edit: posts are coincidentally also 31
31 video = "Mario Wings to the Sky"? Im not sure what you are referring to by '31 video'.

I saw the WIP (at 10 fps cause my computer is ancient). Instead of those 16 coins in the back wouldnt it be quicker to grab the 4 blue coins in the attic? You pass through the room under it at one point and it can be added then. BTW I liked the cinematography in the Bowser 1 Fight :)

Maybe you should test and tally the time for each trip between all those different places you were considering. Like, ignore level time and subtract the frame counts from two points. Then you could find the shortest possible combination.
Do you have any alternative candidates for routes? I mean there are many many combinations but you can eliminate most through logic. Like how you need the vanish cap before DDD and BBH, and you would def want to reenter and exit vanish cap... I am pretty sure FODA has the best route... after this overworld travel should be pretty easy since he has all the caps.

Yeah thinking it over a lot I guess that hall cant be long enough to make the other way faster... any chance though to BLJ down that hall from the stairs on the way to Big Boo's Haunt? If those are real stairs I would think that faster at least... can't remember if they are..

The only thing bad about FODA's route is that it covers the passage way to big boo twice. Would it be quicker to quit out of big boo to go to lobby and go to DDD from there? Which is greater? Stomp Ghost + enter level + select star + quit + enter door + down staircase -> key door vs run to door + open door + fade out + fade in + run hall -> key door Its not obvious to me.

This is a very impressive feat of engineering. Though Bisqwit's comment is a little exagerrated. There are always optimizations you can do to a brute force search to prune the branching factor considerably. At least if you can think of a meaningful lower-bound heuristic.

Sure, as long as the sub doesn't get in your way for any of them. But I bet everybody will be pleased to see the sub and the poles at the same time.
I think the poles only appear if the sub isnt there. I remember FODA saying getting all the red coins with only the sub was faster.

nah, i think it's faster to go from the lobby to the vanish cap slope (near the 2nd bowser door) than going back there from either HMC, SSL or LLL.... so when i'm done with these 3 levels i'll choose exit and that will bring me up to the lobby which saves the most time in this route.
Doh I forgot about going backwards up that slope. It's not even that hard to do :) OK Im really looking forward to this now... The only other overworld bit is that when you get to DDD do as many stars before the bowser sub one as you can since the entry-water will receed and you will have further to travel to reenter.

Arent any of the basement stars on the way to getting the vanish cap? HMC is right? I do remember that getting sucked out the hole in DDD gets you near the Vanish cap, and getting pulled out of the metal cap stage takes you to the waterfall outside. (The other outside exit level is falling in wing mario over the rainbow which puts you near the outside cannon I think). I dont see how to use these though..

Great run! A lot more varied than the run it replaces. On the subject of the movie, I do not think having the TAS text on every lap is necessary... I kept on living in fear of when it would show up again!

It's Mario 64 thread, not FODA's Mario 64 run. And as far as I know, there's no specific rule that we must absolutely talk about anyone's run here. It's Mario 64 thread. conker64's attitude wasn't offensive and he is respecting rules on this board.
I disagree on both counts. The forum rules state:
The Nesvideos forums offer a place for people to discuss movies they're developing. It is recommended for people to start a thread in the relevant forum about the game they're playing and post samples of their progress for others to comment on.
Ultimately this site and by extension this board is about TAS. The description of this board says it is for planning N64 runs. While I concede this specific topic isnt limited to FODA's Mario 64 run, it certainly about TASing Mario 64 and FODA's is the only run currently in developement AFAIK. Also PMing wouldnt stop others from repeating the same information.

I think a place like gamefaqs forums is more appropriate for general Mario 64 discussion. This web site is a TAS forum and this thread is for discussing/planning FODA's TAS. By you posting (and me being forced to respond), you are decreasing the signal to noise ratio of the useful information in the thread.

If you have trouble pushing buttons quickly just lock your fingers into position and tense the muscles in your forearm tightly so that your arm naturally vibrates. You should be able to hit the button like 20 times a second.
