I don't know... I did say "the" 16th star instead of "a" 16th star. That seems like I am refering to a particular star IMO. That it was the 16th star aquired in this run as opposed to say the 16th star in an alphabetical listing is another issue.

Also the 16th star is required to go on to bowser 2.

Well it has a star now :) Very satisfying run but I ceratinly hope this is not the last we'll see of SM64.

Thanks DeHacked for the torrent. I thought the movie was pretty good. The swimming looked like he bumped his head a couple of times and I think that for "Chip off the Old Block" it would be faster to do the stomp move again as he is standing up rather than jump across the back. Am I right in remembering you can do that through-the-block-boss glitch on the way up and on the way down? Voting yes.

To me "crooked cart" seems most like a software hack since the trick disrupts/corrupts game info from reaching the CPU and is thus in the same class as gameshark cheats and memory hacks. That it could be done on a console doesnt really make it less of a memory hack.. you could dump a hacked rom onto a real cartridge and get a similar effect on a console. My two cents.

Simply amazing. I, too, was curious as to how speedrunning would be affected with camera angles thrown into the mix. I even wondered if there was a way to "detach" and see the game from a perspective you weren't really meant to (a la recammed Quake films). I do have one serious question, though, which is what settings/resolution the rendered AVI would be at, since the emulator allows pretty much any number your monitor can take. IMAX (approx. 4000 X 3000 pixels) Mario 64 run, anyone?
There isnt a real point in a high res movie of low res textures on low poly geometry. Actually though the recamming *might* be theoretically possible with a lot of manual work... It would depend on the game I would think you could intercept the calls to OpenGL/DirectX and render the level into a list buffer and then apply a secondary transform to that.... I played on an N64 emulator before that wasnt applying a transformation correctly or something and the viewpoint would be way off. It would be much much harder to control than the Quake recams though as I would think you would see a lot of conflict with the real camera and isnt really worth it.

I've played the XBox port of this. Pretty fun stuff. The AI still needs a bit of work but isnt bad.

Heh sounds like our green friend will be needing his own section on the SMW glitches page.

Glad you are giving it another go. X2 looked like it was just one run away from being really great. If you match or beat all the level times in your last run I don't see any way it won't be.

Wow very nice! Seems perfect to my eyes.. I can't imagine a TAS doing it much faster. It seemed like the computer was trying to help you with that shuttle :-) Flag gets credit as well of course :)

I saw the vids and most of the long ones look like they would benefit from a lot better macro managing. If the objective is to wipe out the enemy I dont think you should have any resources at the end that just seems like waste. Those movies looked like good play but not really anything super. A lot of the shorter ones though you can tell the player had a clearly defined objective (like build a ghost and two nukes as fast as possible etc..) and the strategies should be considered for a TAS. Though Im not sure how much an effect glitches will have on the run.

Yeah that did look a little weird. Ohh wasn't there also an N64 microphone? I don't suppose we're going to see support for that though :) Something else I thought might be useful in the movie format is a "director's commentary" section which would be a set of text in the movie format tagged with start and end frames of when the text should be displayed. Im not sure how much use it would get but it could be neat to embed explanations of what glitches are used or why a path is avoided. Just throwing it out there.

Correct me if I am wrong but isnt this a 4-player game? If you are going to do it you should go all out :)

Uggh what was I thinking! Of course you can define the distance function but how could it be a metric space when distance(A,B) != distance(B,A) //runs away in shame

So how did it save 35 frames?
Yeah I noticed that path error in your published movie but didnt want to tarnish your triumph :). At the bottom you can go either up-right or up-left, both of which have an effective speed of 2. Depending on your decision at the top you must go either left or right respectively (because of the geography) which have speeds of 2 and 1.5 respectively. Interesting enough if you've ever taken a topology course before you can think of the movement vectors as defining a distance function over a non-euclidean metric space. Understanding the shape of the circular regions you can then evaluate the distance between points to find the optimal path, which you did for the most part.

Nice double car-damage boost in the intro :-) Wouldnt you be able to save a few frames off the blue helicopter guys by jumping before your first shot so you can shoot them as they are descending? That's the only thing that pops out at me.

Anyway, my opinion is that the Beam Saber should not be obtained in a "100%" run since the run would look better and more meaningful without it. It's your choice, though.
Well I say if you are going for 100% don't settle for 99%. I don't see the reason for skipping it unless you are worried it will make the final battles boring (in which case you can opt just not to use it I suppose). I am really looking forward to seeing X blazing in that golden armor :)

Can't you hadoken sigma's final form when the "hand" rises up? The only path change I could think of is doing sting cameleon earlier but it looks like you thought of that. It really does look like you should be able to grab that heart though.

Nice run. Out of curiosity how does the boss life meter lie? I'm assuming it puts more life into the lower bars to make it more 'exciting'?

What about a star? I know this run is missing some known glitches like skipping intro and jumping through ladders but the movie it replaces had a star IIRC. Is there for sure an improved version in the works?

It's probably a time-waster. As soon as I got the Speed Burner, I overused it as if I thought it was always faster than Strike Chain or just plain dashing. In this case, I basically used the Speed Burner as soon as possible without regard to height.
Wait Speed Burner is not faster than dashing?! Wow It certainly looks it.

Blechy's original run is still a favorite of mine and this one is unbelievably a huge improvement. An easy YES vote. I wish I didnt know about the jump through ladders glitch from nitsuja's X3 run (I think)... otherwise a beautiful run. Good job random number guy :) EDIT FractalFusion :)
