but glitchless is more vague than BLJ-less which is at least very specific and does a good job of making it a 70-star run, jeez. the game has tons of glitches and who's to say what is and what isn't one. Is walking on fences a glitch? Is being able to wallkick up that area where balls fall in BOB a glitch? Is avoiding the wind in the final area of bowser 3 a glitch? is longjumping on the edge of the upper lava level of BitFS a glitch? How about grabbing bowser's tail as he's being kocked back in bowser3. Or diving or ledge-grabbing to avoid being hurt after a long fall? You don't want these things not in a 70-star tas? BLJ-less only means no BLJ-induced hyperspeed, nothing more, nothing less. (I'm with mukki) also...

Even this definition poses problems, for example in CCM when you get the "wall kicks will work" star you have to do a long jump and then pull back, would that count as a BLJ or are you going to revise the definition so only BLJs that increase speed are not allowed?
You don't jump backwards there... you just happen to be moving in reverse by the end. i.e. no long jumps are made starting backwards.

Just note that a star you can get coinless should be the last one you collect on each floor of the castle. For example, Peach's Slide works great as a last star for the lobby.
why? coins in levels don't waste time unless you get more than around 50 or whatever. mario always has to take off his hat and brush his mustache. Anyway, isn't it possible to be directly below the star when you're done with the king, or is it faster to stay in place, wait for the text, and then go to the star?

Because then someone else might use something in their TASes, making Saturn get less pride from it, since not everybody reads the submission texts for credits. That's my bet.
I'm pretty sure pride runs are discouraged here. And if people don't read submission texts then they probably don't care who submitted it either. There really is no reason why the 3 or 4 active runners don't share wips. At least that way the general public will still be "surprised" and everyone benefits from a run that has had many people check the quality of every part. It's not like anyone here is a credit stealer.

As a silent reader of this thread, my two cents are that I agree realtime makes for a more entertaining-to-watch goal than in-game. (The only games I can think of that are worth going for in-game are games like mischief makers or sonic.)

As far as I'm concerned, a no-castle BLJ would make for an entertaining 70-star run, but it's too contrived. BLJ'ed in-level stars can be seen in a 120-star run. a good 4th (counting CCC-less) category, as aka said, would be completely BLJ-less. I didn't see AKA or SL's response to what I wrote in the submission thread: have you looked into waiting for the BitFS elevator to reach the top while BLJing so you can use hyperspeed to get to the rising platforms, and possibly up them (though iirc you can't hyper up "sliding" surfaces)?

Also, I forget, but another thing worth looking at is skipping Bowser 1 completely. Has anyone got close to BLJing through the basement door (or does door act funky).
like the upstairs key door, BLJing through it is not useful because you can't open the door without the key. and I'll repost here since this was a late edit after a few posts and at the bottom of a page: "unless of course... rather than wallkicking up the caged elevator in BitFS, can any time be gained by waiting for it to reach the top, but you charge up some BLJ's so you have hyperspeed until the rising platform section?"

I knew this day would come. bravo! As far as the one-star category goes, I don't think this can be improved more than a second, it looked extremely tight. So psh to whoever said 9 for technical. edit: unless of course... rather than wallkicking up the caged elevator in BitFS, can any time be gained by waiting for it to reach the top, but you charge up some BLJ's so you have hyperspeed until the rising platform section?

For the record, an interrupt save is an owl statue save. Save states work perfectly.
Does it work any differently on the console? seems like the programmers didn't feel like saving the timer value...? because how often are you going to want to interrupt save when you have a timer based item. it's not like you can reload the save if you fuck up.

I don't think people would be cool with an avi that isn't exactly like what you'd see in the emulator. Whether a song is in it 3 times or not.

I played this game a lot as a kid though I never got very far the legit way. I used the all-levels-open password and it blew me away just how many levels this game has. A 100% of this game would take hours. Just how many levels do you need to beat this game as fast as possible? From what I saw of the TAS so far (5 minutes, then gens crashed) it looked good. :)

so you do have internet at home, it's just slow? Leave the computer on, and you can download over 500MB per day (maybe 250 if bittorrent wants to share the line equally). I really don't see the problem. You'd have the mario 64 files by now if you had started to download them when you posted this thread. Also the short ones (plural because there are efforts by AKA, swordless link, and rikku) are on youtube as well. That or use the emulator, a rom, and the relevant movie file. with dialup and google, all necessary materials should take about fifteen minutes minutes to acquire and while you wait, you can read the faq on how to get it ready for watching..

It...uh....made the randomness in BoB a little better... Seriously, it was a mistake. I misread somewhere and thought it took three stars for Koopa to appear. I'm debating what to do about it. I certainly don't want to redo the BoB coins; any suggestions? I tried hexing it, but as you can imagine, BoB has plenty of randomness in it, and it desynched almost immediately. I think I'll change the basement route a little bit (eg, do B2 and DDD first), but I'm open to opinions/suggestions.
Wouldn't it be slower to get MIPS to do DDD+B2 first, than, say, do SSL, LLL, HMC, and then do DDD+B2 later? Then again, I'm not factoring the blue cap into that...

I do however have some questions... the whole reason you got so many stars in the beginning was so you could do red cap before BOB. But the way you did BOB lent itself perfectly to getting the 100-coin star and start->exit course. which would mean you could do all previous areas and get 5 less stars since you have 15 at the end of BOB, and still do wing cap...
Ah, but we still needed the first three BoB stars for the Koopa shell to appear.
I meant so many stars at the beginning of the run, not BOB, sorry. But nevermind, my mind was somehow ignoring that wing cap was used extensively in BOB. I still believe it would be shorter to skip stars earlier, do the required BOB stars, then do wing palace in the sky, and then go back to BOB for all coins.

Wow, that's a substantial improvement, speed- and entertainment-wise. It's still a little improvable (like 6:11 of part 1, for example), and I don't know why he goes all the way to Bonus Special Stage (especially in the first version since he didn't get the cape), but whatever. At least the cape is good for the end of Hell Or Heaven and all of (my japanese sucks so I'm guessing on this stage name) Better Ultra. Also swimming to the beat of the music is nice.

re: new wip That was amazing! I especially loved you showing off new (to me) ways of getting up one level of the spiral mountain during the koopa the quick race, and purposefully collecting 0 coins when you aren't going to collect them all :D I do however have some questions... the whole reason you got so many stars in the beginning was so you could do red cap before BOB. Maybe I'm forgetting something obvious again :/

Wow .. this game is insane! I don't speak or read japanese, but I'm pretty sure that all that scrolling text is totally unnecessary. What does it say, in general? Comments about what's going on, or simply the guy saying "I'm japanese and I put all this scrolling text because I can and it's really really annoying"?
At the top it's disclaimers... he states when it was made, how many attempts it took... he says that he loves TASing, TASes are cool, and I think he was pretending people were watching and commenting with some comments that are just the japanese equivalent of "woooooooooooooooow" "cooooooooooooool" "delicious" and "amaaaaaaaaaaaaziiiiiiiiiiiing" and any time you see a "w" (or lots of w's) that's the equivalent of "lololol" also lots of "___ get!"s I wouldn't want to play that game, but it was a fun watch.

you can't count time saved from BLJ'ing towards how much faster B1 is with and without coins. BLJ can be done and coins collected too.

oh crap, you're right. The 5 seconds the way I suggested might have saved if the fall through water glitch worked would be offset by like 15 seconds of dancing!

No, sami is using the same goals as marshmallow. Since mumbo tokens aren't shown as collected/total in the item screen, and not at all in the level screens, they aren't counted as part of the 100% (much to BoMF's dismay). BTW, I have the player's guide with detailed maps of all item locations. I could scan pages if I borrow a friend's scanner next week (to help with routes or what-have-you)

soulrivers: an absolutely retarded amount of work (multiple papers and projects every week) at school this month means I haven't done anything. Also testing those frames is dull :( Anyway, sami, here's an idea for the end of CC since you're redoing anyway... I'll use the video I made as a reference. at 8:05, colect the notes already, and go into clanker do everything you did before inside, getting whatever feathers you need. then, when you leave through the gills, go back on top of clanker and then use the bolt to travel to the top and collect that jiggy (the one originally at 8:20). Then fall down using the same glitch you used at 6:07 and you should be right in front of the tunnel back to the entrance. It seems like this would save time because there's less swimming...
