Edit:The event is over and I've provided my own feedback along with important changes to future GDQ's and I've covered why my personal situation and finances have been so complex. Feedback is welcome. Yep, another event, another thread. This time, I need to tap the considerable resources of TASVideos members because I'm still coming off of the remnants of post-SGDQ 2018 interviews and articles and I'm still in the midst of GDQx 2018 preparations (coming up October 28th). Edit: Castlevania, Super Scribblenauts, and mari0 made it in! The original post is below. Here's what I know: - Submissions for AGDQ 2019 open on August 25th and close September 4th - yes, that's very soon - We can look through things that we submitted that were rejected in previous events that weren't obviously bad ideas and resubmit them (although we picked through the list already for GDQx 2018 submissions) - To that end, we need content suggestions with a special focus on new content - I do not currently plan to focus on ACE payloads where we take over a game and do something interesting using the game engine (i.e. taking a break from content in the style of Lord Tom's amazing SMB3 playaround or Masterjun's SMW engine showoff run). - I *do* plan to focus on ACE payloads that do unique things that haven't been done yet; more on this as things solidify but folks from http://Discord.TASBot.net are working that angle. - Brain Age was amazing. Can we (you?) do something art-like? Someone mentioned Passpartout but we need someone to research things. Anything else? - What TAS runs would really shine with proper commentary? So TASVideos members, what site content do you think should be represented? You know the drill, reply and let's hash it out! P.S. - As in the last few events I'm planning on fully funding my own trip and equipment costs but unlike last year when I had a windfall I'm finding this event to be a bit tight potentially. Donations are welcome at http://Donate.TASBot.net if you're willing and I'll definitely be publicly thanking folks. Thanks!

First, you're a true hero for starting on this. This is an amazing project and I'll be highlighting it substantially. I've started making a TAS in the game mari0 which uses the love framework (with the current version at https://github.com/Stabyourself/mari0 working with the latest 11.1 release of love). The love framework combines OpenGL and SDL2 in a Lua game engine and there are a number of interesting games for the project but I'm most amused at the idea of Mario holding a Portal gun so I'm starting with that. I've run into an issue which I've submitted at https://github.com/clementgallet/libTAS/issues/52 - in brief, if we allow music to play it calls love.audio.stop() which causes the game to hang (no frames advance). I've been working with the devs on their Discord server at https://discord.gg/znze7SQ and we've hacked together a version that removes all those calls which means it's possible to make a TAS but without music. I plan to play around with making a -1 run sans the music on my stream tonight at http://twitch.tv/dwangoAC and I'll let you know how it goes but I'm very excited!

I have confirmation that cheese05, who is running SM64 at the event, is able to do commentary for SM64 1-key (although it became a donation incentive). Tikevin83 is coming and has agreed to manage Hyper Princess Pitch and Pokemon Yellow. GlitchCat77 is coming and has agreed to commentate the two SMW runs, Kaizo Mario World 3 and Item Abuse 3. We'll be running the games in that order with Item Abuse 3 as the finale. I'll be testing a newer TAS of the game by xHF01x during my stream tonight at http://twitch.tv/dwangoAC which may save more than a minute. All of us going now have TwitchCon badges allocated to us (but not yet delivered) and I'd like to thank GDQ staff for making that happen.

And all five submissions were accepted. That's a first. You read that correctly. The only categories that weren't accepted were the ones that I expected would not be accepted, which were the 120 star run and the oldest 16 star run of SM64, with the 1-Key run chosen for that game. So, who can help prepare commentary? I'm reminded of an ad from a decade ago or more where people are celebrating as new orders come in for a new product, then they stop celebrating as they realize that orders just keep coming and they don't have the resources to handle the volume. Frankly, I was expecting only Item Abuse 3 to get in with the rest of them being declined. This is a wonderful surprise but I'm going to need some help to not fail at commentary. Any volunteers?

So I haven't replied recently because I wanted to think through a few things. There's been some really good feedback to some of the positions I've taken and I needed time to consider. For now, I think I'd like to focus only on what it might take to get Celeste on the site as an example of what we might need to do and ignore any possible volume of other submissions for other games as it doesn't seem likely we'll have a massive influx right now anyway. I think I was wrong to assume that. Mothrayas has convinced me that the existing site parser isn't too terrible to modify by hand for these scenarios and I'm on board with that, although I still see no harm in allowing a user to fill in fields and have a third-party validate that they're accurate like a referee. I understand that we're currently biased by our inadequate number of judges and the massive backlog on the workbench but that's not a forever thing. My goal is to pull more people to TASVideos and that growth would hopefully come with fresh judges but I recognize how foreign it sounds to say we could in the future support this kind of thing. As the President of the North Bay Linux Users' Group and an advocate for open source software I heartily agree with the comments above - only open-source code should be considered, to allow the method of rerecording to be analyzed for cheating. No judge should be expected to run some random executable. I'd like to thank everyone who participated in the conversation thus far for your thoughts and thank you for challenging my perceptions on some things. I'm willing to change my perspective and opinions even if I still have a strong hope that we can expand past the existing console focused frameworks to support more interesting things. I'm seriously interested in the libTAS project and I'd like to better understand it so that's my next area of interest for when I have free time (I have little of that right now). I think libTAS could be huge if it pans out and I'm looking forward to what happens.

Again, who is saying No explicitly?
The site itself is antagonistic (or at least passively unhelpful) by not facilitating any possible method whatsoever to submit non-standardized content. I recognize there have been endless and fruitless arguments about names for content like this and phrases like demo tier now have a terrible name as a result. I could care less what we call it, let's just please open up the submission form to allow for "Other" as the platform and remove restrictions on filetype matching and see what happens. This is obviously both the wrong way and the wrong place for this conversation so I'll stop now.

We're quickly getting to the point where this conversation needs to be split off to a different thread, but I think we can be mature enough to avoid another Todd Rogers. Will we be 100% successful every single time we encounter a new emulation platform? Certainly not, as my own experiences with TI-83 tests show a case where an emulator core was deemed not accurate enough. Does that mean we shouldn't try? I don't think so. I believe it is necessary to expand the role of an arm's length / third-party reviewer to allow other experimental rerecording frameworks to be accepted (of which I'm roughly speaking an author of one in the form of the NetHack rerecording framework although that one will never be put to the test as the run syncs on jpc-rr and I'm digressing terribly). I'm obviously biased in every possible way but I cannot conceive of a situation so dire that we can't at least try. Let's talk about Celeste itself for a moment - we have full code we can look at, a patch file, and even support from the developers. It's as if this was handed to us on a silver platter. Why, tell me, is it literally impossible to at least be open to the idea that someone on the site could review the work that was done? We will never know, because as it stands now there is no submission method whatsoever to allow such a thing to be attempted. There is a chicken and egg problem here - feos (rightly) makes the assumption that based on what we know now we don't have the ability to rigorously verify new rerecording frameworks, a valid assumption based on a lack of prior cases. We have no prior cases because the submission process does not allow anything but already accepted platforms. We thus are caught in a loop where we will never know how the community would respond. I'm nearly blue in the face from saying this, but we have got to stop being so elite or we will diminish in importance in time as platforms move on and as every old platform is exhausted of games worth TAS'ing. A quick chat with link_7777 and the TASMania project shows we still have a few more years but it's only a matter of time before there aren't any interesting improvements or new games to work with with the classic consoles. We need to start making the decisions now that allow us to at least make it possible to consider newer PC games. I'm in no way downplaying the amount of work that will be required, don't get me wrong here, but to never start is to stagnate.

New this year from the Games Done Quick folks is an event called GDQ Express, or GDQx for short. The GDQx series is for smaller events that are shorter in length throughout the year. The first event will be held at TwitchCon 2018 in San Jose, CA on October 26th and 27th. I happen to liv within easy driving distance and similar to Calithon I plan to drive down for the day (or perhaps stay overnight if there's a good reason to but it's about an hour and a half drive on a weekend). To that end I'm making some game submissions as I've discussed on http://Discord.TASBot.net and on my streams at http://Twitch.tv/dwangoAC (with a smattering of chat in #tasbot on Freenode IRC). There were two main pieces of feedback I received from SGDQ 2018 that influenced me for this first GDQx event - the first was from staff in that we went way over length (an accurate assessment) and the second was an odd mixture of primarily extremely positive and occasionally lukewarm responses to some of the content. What negative feedback we had wasn't even consistent about the same things and amounted to personal preference. Some folks from the infosec community were really interested in the GBA driving a Gamecube but said they got bored of Celeste quickly while other feedback on outlets like YouTube were upset because there was something other than plain TAS playback presented. I saw different negative feedback on different sites and taken together there weren't any really broad strokes - most people felt we executed well for a summer event (keep in mind we usually do the more crazy stuff at AGDQ's) and in general there were only vague themes around content quality. The biggest factor I'm concerned about for GDQx isnt the content feedback from SGDQ 2018, it's actually the staff reaction to how far over time we ran. It was so bad that there was a hint that we probably wouldn't be able to even get a run in to GDQx because of the time estimate overrun. Based on that feedback I picked extremely safe content with very low techincal requirements, short length, and high entertainment value. I also made absolutely sure to include notes on setup time, if any. I present below the somewhat hastily colleted submissions we more or less agreed on: TASBot plays Super Mario 64 The first SM64 TAS was created by spezzafer in 2005 with advancements coming fast since then. The 16-star category would show the 2005 era run for the express purpose of showing how far strategies have come and could be shown as a race against an RTA runner with the TAS set to a delayed start. The 120 star run is likely to be improved before the event starts. The 1 key run has never been seen at a GDQ, at least not on a real N64. Please add 5 extra minutes to setup to account for pre/post times. 1-Key by several TAS authors - 00:04:21 SM64 as it existed in 2005 - 16-star by spezzafer - 00:16:26 120 stars by a massive number of talented authors - 01:20:41 N64 TASBot plays Item Abuse 3 by PangaeaPanga The YouTube reactions to this run include "What is this insanity?!", "The lack of responsibility in Panga's life has reached dangerous levels.", and "I can't wait to see how GDQ chat reacts." The TASBot crew couldn't agree more - just watch this run and you'll see for yourself. Unlike other TAS runs, this needs no additional setup time (seriously; not even any pre/post intro time). SMW is extremely reliable and there is time during the boo fight for final commentary. This is very GDQ safe. TASBot% - 00:07:57 SNES TASBot plays Pokemon Yellow This is the first time we've been able to verify Pokemon Yellow and the method is a treat to watch. This No Save Corruption run contains everything from extreme luck manipulation to bizarre items, reaching the Hall of Fame in an insanely fast time. Please add 5 minutes to setup for pre/post intro. This is a true console verification using a hardware unmodified Gamecube and Game Boy Player, with full technical details at http://tasvideos.org/6023S.html No Save Corruption any% by TiKevin83 - 00:11:47 GC Kaizo Mario World 3 This run was the highest voted run in a 2017 poll of runs TASBot can play. There are only a handful of humans who have ever beaten this game (unlike the humanly impossible Item Abuse 3 TAS which is also being submitted to GDQx). This run shows off SMW physics in a way that other runs do not and concludes with a unique boss fight. This is a very safe run which does not require any additional setup time, with all commentary fitting within the game's time itself. any% by ISM & Mister - 00:17:11 SNES TASBot plays Hyper Princess Pitch by Tseralith Most of Daniel Remar's freeware games include an impossibly hard joke difficulty like "ReallyJoel's Mom". In Hyper Princess Pitch the mode substantially multiplies enemy spawn rates, removes all power-ups, dramatically increases the firing rate of enemies that shoot, and allows more of them to do so. It makes SmashTV look like a Barney game. This run will require access to a stream PC and testing to ensure it functions correctly but otherwise should not require substantial pre-run setup time. Reallyjoel's Mom difficulty, best ending - 00:15:40 PC As you can see we've prioritized content that has been pitched in the past but was not accepted at the time and we've prioritized short runs with high value. There is no ACE here, unless you count Pokemon Yellow where said ACE is not part of the target game itself and is extremely safe. There's definitely no total control payload stuff going on. This is a small event and I'm treating it much like an HRDQ or a Calithon. My total time commitment if a run is accepted will be less than 8 hours the day of; in fact, simply deciding on and testing the submissions over the last week took far far more time than the marathon itself will take. As with the past two events I realize the TASVideos community has become weary of financially supporting me based on the massive drop-off of financial support that happened during AGDQ 2017 so I'm again covering all of my own expenses. For testing I borrowed a GBP and Pokemon Yellow so if that run is accepted I'll have some equipment expenses. I'll have some amount of travel costs, especially if I opt to stay overnight. I just got through SGDQ where I had a couple thousand dollars worth of expenses so I'm trying to keep new costs down. If for some reason you do feel compelled to help me offset costs I've set up https://donate.TASBot.net as a way to help offset those costs. Still, I'll gladly serve in my role as Site Ambassador on staff here even if it continues to cost me money out of my own pocket. This is a good site with an awesome community and it's worth supporting. Thanks everyone for the support!

Why do the Celeste and F-Zero GX runs not on TASVideos yet? ...the Celeste runs were clearly complete, so I'm quite confused there.
I have struggled greatly with attempting to get content from GDQ's submitted on TASVideos. There is a general resistance amongst site staff to allowing anything "new" and Celeste falls in this category. The Celeste TAS was created using a rerecording framework designed specifically for the game and there is no way the runs can be submitted using the current site code. This continuing unwillingness to allow content that does not fall within the confines of traditional runs, i.e. anything that isn't one of the existing accepted emulators, limits the content that can be highlighted on the site. The only format for this kind of content on the site is Wiki pages and forum posts per various conversations with site administrators but that is a very poor, second-class experience both for those posting the content and those attempting to find and view it. Thus we find ourselves in the same situation as in years past - it is highly desirable from a notable contingent of site visitors to have this content represented shoulder-to-shoulder alongside traditional TAS runs. The lack of a way to do this has led to a growing schism where content like Celeste is pushed off the site and onto other platforms. I am part of site staff and would love to see changes here but it will take dedicated site coding to resolve the issues I've identified above along with a willingness to allow more diverse content on the site and I'm afraid I don't see any changes on either front coming from the administrators on staff. Yes, I'm repeating myself a bit by saying the same things in different ways but it's because it's very important that everyone understands why we're here. I have no solutions beyond hoping the prevailing winds shift.

We are on deck for SGDQ 2018, sitting in what is called the green room which consists of a couch. There are a *lot* of us here. Celeste has 5 mics for goodness sake. Super Metroid has some of the best runners. F-Zero GX has a huge team of supporting cast. It's going to be good, we're relatively practiced and don't believe we'll have any major surprises from a desync perspective. There should be some really good stuff! I will probably not check this thread for a while after as we're going to be rather exhausted. :) Thanks to everyone who helped out.

In a way this might make the TAS a bit less interesting, as it means that we don't have to screw around nearly as much on Home:1 as we would otherwise (I was preparing some sort of super-elaborate plan with multiple zero-turn backtracks via double-drowns). On the other hand, it does rather increase the chance that it gets finished at all.
I, for one, am definitely interested in seeing this TAS through to the end. :) I'm obviously in the midst of SGDQ but we should connect after I get home. I'd love to get some progress going again.

Clarification: is the Discord bot still infecting the channel, instead of having its own IRC channel?
This isn't the thread I want to discuss this in and I disagree with your wording but yes, there is a Discord link at this time to allow easier connectivity. It has not caused a significant problem. If you choose not to use IRC if the link is present it's your choice but because the majority of people in chat find it useful I don't see that changing.
In more topical news, SGDQ is underway and the first interview desk segment will be immediately after the conclusion of the Castlevania desk. There will also be a small interview desk segment for SMB3 on Thursday. The big event is Friday and work is fully underway. Some things are going well while other things are behind but we're moving forward every day. Feel free to stop by either #tasbot in Freenode IRC or http://Discord.TASBot.net if you'd like to help out with anything.

Is the IRC channel still infected?
I wouldn't call it infected per se. Some folks have left including one or two people who had a penchant for insulting people (as in, insulting you, me, and others), others have joined, some have solidified themselves on the Discord side while others are IRC stalwarts. It's matured perhaps, and a lot of the content that had been discussed on #tasbot on Freenode is now on #hangout on http://Discord.TASBot.net instead. I work around my dislike of Discord by using Bitlbee to make Discord look and act like IRC which gets me what I want but may not be for you (and requires setting up Bitlbee). My guess is you're not going to find what you want. I'm drafting a status update but I may or may not be able to post it here today. Lots of things are afoot and I've done a lot of delegating so now it's a week of trying to pin down everything to make sure we know where we're at. More soon...

Note: Oxford comma missing due to maxing out the title. There are a rather substantial number of facets to SGDQ 2018 and I've delegated various aspects to different people. Here's a who, a what, and a why (or really, the current status, but "status" wouldn't fit in the title). MediaMagnet: SGDQ Panel submission and organization. When the announcement that panels were being introduced came out I knew I couldn't do it justice and I asked MediaMagnet to lead the charge on this one. He basically got voluntold. He absolutely stepped up to the plate and completed the submission on time. The content would be an overview of the history of TAS'ing including highlights of how it was received in the early days, a description of console verification, and a live demo of some kind. An announcement from the SGDQ 2018 panels committee on what panels will be in the event is forthcoming. total: Super Metroid payload. We've kept it rather quiet but we do have full ACE. I've delegated what to put in and what to leave out of the payload to total and he has a few ideas. He's recently done a Super Metroid + Link to the Past mashup rando romhack that's spectacular so I've encouraged him to advertise it somehow but it's up to him how or if he wants to do that. We'll inevitably do something with saving or killing the animals, probably by doing both, but we want it to be tasteful. This project is delayed a bit as total has been distracted with his romhack but he reconnected this past week. DevilSquirrel: Celeste payload. DevilSquirrel is the primary TAS contact for us. We still need a bit of clarification on exactly what can and can't be done but I'm encouraging the submissions comitte to consider allowing us to fastforward through cutscenes and show Celeste directly after the human runners complete the game so we can demonstrate the substantial differences between the two. Depending on what happens here KDT and DevilSquirrel will have to do some amount of rework but it won't be too terrible; the run is already complete and looks good as it is. illy: Celeste visualization. I've asked illy to attempt to pass button data to one of the replay devices (either the PSoC5 device or mico500's always flexible TASLink device) so we can show a visualization of what buttons are being pressed. We originally wanted to do this part in Linux but it wasn't worth the effort. On my side I'm still trying to figure out how to get PCI passthrough working on my laptop but either way we'll have a way to get this working. Metaconstruct: F-Zero GX content. I'm very thankful that Metaconstruct has taken it upon himself to organize a rather staggering list of Gamecube coders, hackers, reverse engineering experts, artists, and other interested parties. It's quite amazing how many people are contributing just from a payload perspective. There are a number of roles that Metaconstruct has and he probably has more on his shoulders than almost anyone else as he's also tasked with figuring out what TAS'ed individual levels to show and how to end the segment with some, er, flair. There is some amount of risk for that flair but if all else fails we can ad lib around the existing replay files we have now. I have high hopes for this one even if the amount of work left to do scares me. Serisium: F-Zero GX console verification hardware. I've asked Serisium to take the lead on creating a replay device so we can press buttons on an actual Gamecube rather than relying on the F-Zero GX in-game replay file method. He is currently working with a fair number of folks to potentially use a GBA along with code from Extrems. This may or may not work and is highly risky (but is far less risky than a much more insane plan that I've made the call to defer to a later event, so there's that). The consequences of failure are extremely low, however, as we can always fall back on the replay files instead. Timeshifter: Tools. This is a bit vague but we have a lot of random things we're chipping away at and Timeshifter has been doing a ton of architecture work on a number of things that may end up being used or shown at SGDQ. Some of it is the artwork / paint-by-numbers / pbn stuff extended from the original idea p4plus2 implemented while other tools are more generic and are more focused on streaming. It's quite unclear if anything he's working on is going to be in SGDQ or not but I wanted to highlight him as someone I've delegated a rather substantial workload to. This one is surprisingly big, there are quite a number of people helping out with these tools and this deserves its own post to properly provide credit to everyone so I'll leave at this for now. dwangoAC (me): SGDQ Interview Desk runner praise segments. Just like at AGDQ 2018 I'll be using TAS playback to demonstrate how various glitches human runners attempt are accomplished and praise the human runners for their skill. I've pitched SMB3 and LoZ:OoT along with a third game earlier in the week like Spyro and the committee has responded positively to the idea. We have not yet fleshed out the exact games or what timeslots the interviews would happen in but this is looking good. I'm also tackling logistics. As in past years I'm still the primary organizer and presenter coordinator but for some of the games we're doing I will be taking a back seat other than introducing the run. This is primarily because the depth of knowledge for a game like Celeste is beyond what I can prepare for and there are others who can do a better job anyway. This means I'll be doing a lot of rehearsal type things at the event this year. Lots and lots and lots of other fantastic folks too numerous to mention: Random stuff. (Seriously, I'm probably forgetting someone I should be giving top-level billing or have otherwise neglected with those odds higher since I'm typing this up on very little sleep; if I've missed something just let me know.) There are always little jobs that need done, some of which are mostly beneficial during the preparation phase to help organize things and spread the word of what we're doing. One good example of this is pepman who has been helping me with highlights which has given me videos I can point at and say "we need help with finishing this thing". Inverted made an entire suite of tools around pbn management that still blows my mind. There are so many other people doing odd jobs I can't even begin to cover them all, but swing by the http://Discord.TASBot.net #hangouts channel and you'll see what I mean. So, uh, I know this may be feeling like it's more like an AGDQ given how much we're cramming into it but believe it or not this is what things look like *after* I toned it down a notch or two. There is a lot left to accomplish so if you have a mind to lend a hand just stop by the aforementioned Discord or swing by http://twitch.tv/dwangoAC most any Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday evening Pacific time to see what we're working on at any given point. Thanks again to all who have supported our efforts!

I somehow didn't see this thread but we're in good hands. MediaMagnet submitted a TAS / TASBot panel on behalf of the team. Once we find out if it has been accepted or not I'll try to remember to update this thread. (Most TAS content at SGDQ disussions are happening on Discord and on my stream these days and I've been rather poor at updating the forums, my bad.)

Yeah, everyone lost steam on that one when it was rejected but I should circle around on it and try that again sometime. It could be fun! There are still plenty of systems we don't have reset methods for but it's nice having one or two.

Why not use a game's soft-reset combo?
Hi greysondn, welcome! This isn't a bad idea in a pinch but it's also no longer needed. We have isolated reset methods for both the NES and the SNES and can do so on frame boundaries. What we can't do is sub-frame precision yet, which would be needed to verify one of the things Masterjun just did. Most of the time in-game resets won't do what we want either because they often do a small amount of cleanup and typically when we're doing a reset it's in the middle of something that doesn't want to be interrupted like saving data. Thanks for thinking about this!

What's different, legally, for interactive fiction versus other games?
Simple - the entirety of the work is shown essentially unchanged and thus it is not a transformative work, as Nach describes in Wiki: Nach/FairUse in great detail. Hi Warp - I'm on staff and I do not believe I have taunted you in the course of this conversation but I'd like to note that you've been rather aggressively presuming you are the subject of taunts or attacks even when people are simply trying to express that they don't agree with you using neutral wording. Now, there *have* been some comments in this thread against you that I think have been over the line and I'm not about to defend those people, but I'd like to reinforce that you have the power to choose where (and if) you will respond. I care a lot about the subject being discussed here and I would like this personal disagreement to move out of this thread as I noted earlier. Thank you for bringing the topic back to the subject of the origins of the TASVideos name in your later responses.

So, have a gander at https://gamesdonequick.com/submission/games-list and search for TASBot or dwangoAC. The following made it in and I've asked various people to be prime for each run (i.e. to lead the work for it): TASBot plays Celeste by DevilSquirrel and KDT C-Sides [Bonus Game] 00:06:00 any% [Bonus Game] 00:31:05 This is a very solid, low risk run. It's unclear if they will put both Celeste TAS runs in the donation incentive but it is highly likely one Celeste TAS will make it in (I'd be very surprised if it didn't). DevilSquirrel is prime for this and illy is helping out with investigating if it is possible to send button presses to a visualization board. If we are unable to do that, no additional development work is expected if we use Windows and while the possibility of porting it to Linux is under investigation to make sending button presses easier it is likely we will not go down that route. TASBot plays Super Metroid 0% by Sniq and total 0%: 00:07:07 We have a recipe now that is already fairly sync stable but we need to do additional testing and refinement. The time is listed as 7:07 but we'll be taking several seconds off of that due to recent improvements from Sniq and we'll be taking over 2 minutes off from skipping the cutscene by starting from a 0-minute savestate (and posting a "verification movie" that watches the cutscene). This is a true ACE run so we will be using the ~2 saved minutes to have some fun with the animals. I'm thankful that total has agreed to be the prime for this run as there is a fair bit of testing needed to get it completely sync stable and up and running. Payload discussions are happening on #tasbot IRC. Any payload will still result in the game being completed. TASBot plays F-Zero GX by talented authors: 00:10:00 This is going to be a series of runs with Metaconstruct as the prime. There are a few different authors who have already created runs and we hope to be able to do some fun fun things. Discussions are happening at http://Discord.TASBot.net for now. More to come!

Post subject: Let's set aside the personal and discuss if that S matters

First, I should provide my own background - I submitted my first TAS here in 2008 but prior to that I was enamored with what Morimoto had made when I encountered a file named "mariox.wmv" circa 2004. I spent many hours watching random content on NESVideos as a viewer rather than a participant in the early days. As the saying has been thrown around, "I was there too". It's clear to me that there are two discussions running in parallel, one about the nature of what the S in TASVideos meant then and means now against the backdrop of a separate discussion about personal beliefs about the intent of others. I'm going to focus on the latter part only briefly: Nach, you can be direct and your words can hurt whether you intend them to or not. Warp, you can be direct and your words can hurt whether you intend them to or not. Yes, I typed that twice. Nach, when Warp says he's feeling hurt, he's probably telling the truth and continuing to throw repeated evidence at him probably isn't helping. Warp, we know Nach can sometimes take things too far but I believe he's sincere when he says he respects you. Let's set aside the personal relationship conversation and focus on the intent of the discussion instead; I trust the two of you are mature enough to hash out your relationship in a less public forum. For me, when I look back on the early years I see a lot more emphasis on the "Tool-Assisted" part and a whole lot less concern about whatever the S stood (or stands) for. Was what is represented on the site as [668] NES Super Mario Bros. 3 "warps" by Morimoto in 11:03.95 the absolute pinnacle of speed? Clearly not, given how many times it has been obsoleted. To me, that run was a wonderful fusion - the outcome of a human, assisted by tools, creating art. One direction I saw the site take in the years shortly before I finally joined was an obsession with perfection. This was only natural; we gave humans tools and those tools allowed for inhuman perfection which was appealing. Unfortunately, the natural consequence was the S came to mean Speed for more people and the fact that it could imply more of an organic fusion of tools assisting humans for goals other than speed was somewhat lost. Why do I care about this topic? Because the GDQ content we've been creating is often *not* focused on pure speed. It's much more often art that cannot be created or expressed without the assistance of tools. My hope is that the legacy of this site is not forgotten and that at some point in the future it will be possible to represent some of the content we've created on the site in at least some meaningful way that isn't a toss-away and easily lost wiki page. I look forward to the day where I can submit a run, check a box to say it isn't about speed, and allow people to debate its merits as a work of art rather than as something that must meet objective criteria such as completing a game in a specific way. We lock ourselves into a narrow definition in a niche within a niche when we make the site only about speed. What we call the S in TASVideos is far less important to me than remembering the legacy of the site and the art that has come before. I look forward to seeing how the site matures as we approach the heat death of the planet and every game for every TAS'able platform has been completed to its maximum speed and all that is left to be done is, well, the art that can be made by those unafraid to try something more risky than just speed. Speedruns? Superplays? You choose what it means for you. If there's still Tool-Assisted content here I'll be well content.

So it's time to show my hand - I worked on this game along with the second entry in the series in 2016, before my life was flipped upside down last year. I'm not saying what I've done is objectively better or worse, I'm just saying I think there are differences in how entertainment can be handled that are worth noting. My first attempt that I actually kept a file of (there were many before it) is 3-D Battles of WorldRunner 1 and 2 WIP and a later attempt is at 3-D Battles of WorldRunner 1 and 2 WIP 2016-07-19. Each file works on both games (I think, it's been a while) and completes roughly the first level, showing that the same sequence of button presses can complete both games at the same time. My point in posting these is not to stir the pot, it's just here to show that this is a rather simple game that is effectively a glorified autoscroller and entertainment choices can be made. I will abstain from voting so as to not introduce my own bias into the process.

At the moment I only have the ability to console verify a single player's input using true's multireplay board so just like my earlier console verification of Omnigamer's run I would only be able to verify the run with one of the two cars and I don't know if it's possible to get the same result that way. That limitation is also why I held off on marking Omnigamer's run as fully console verified. Because there is substantial work required to set up a two player configuration with the hardware I have on hand I'm probably not going to attempt to verify this run but I have every confidence based on what we know about the game that a console verification attempt would eventually succeed. Great work on this!

Can you please clarify what level of console verification was employed here? Did you use Endrift's GBPP? I'd like to try to follow through on actual verification on console if there's a way to do it. Voted Yes. :)

If you guys get and like the new version, I'll contact the site admins and see what it would take to update the JPC-rr page to include my version as an option.
Let me know what changes you want. We can probably also arrange for you to be an editor so you can update it yourself (assuming you're talking about the WIki entry on TASVideos at Wiki: EmulatorResources/JPC that is).
