Don't care if I'm in the minority opinion on this one. Firstly it fails to be faster than something that exists back in 2008. Which has been converted: User movie #49844826068076307 Secondly. Pac-Man's NES has a loop which has a speed and enemy speed cap (and aggression). It's not hard to figure out where your input can be repeated as you can clone your input. And if my memory serves me correctly it's at key, which is Maze 13. This movie is not complete. No vote.
Hi Spikestuff, thanks for the feedback. I was curious to try the movie you reference, but I just couldn't make it work. Seems like the initial two starts 'S' do not initially start the game with the rom file I used. When I try to play that movie, it tells me 'Movie hash does not match the ROM'. Could you please check? Regarding This movie is not complete, I believe this rule was relaxed as of late, to allow publications like this. It's up to the judges tho. [Update]: It seems like the movie above was done with the Tengen version, whereas I used the Namco version. I tried cross-copying the solutions to one another at the point of level start, and both desync -- meaning that the game mechanics are also different (perhaps only on RNG). I will nevertheless test the Randil route on the Namco version to see if it achieves a faster solution than our proposed one. If so, we'll rework the math/routing to see if we can improve it. Until then, I suppose this movie is the fastest solution so far for the rom version I used.

Thank you man! Appreciate that you've made this TAS a LOT. It's a different version of the game than Atari 65 XL/XE's, but it brings back old very good memories. It was the only game that my mother liked... :' ) As such, Frogger has a special place in my heart. Thank you, once again...!
Hey PLANET, I'm very happy you liked this one and that it brought such nice memories. That alone made the time spent on the Atari emulator worth it ;)

After running this game on JaffarPlus, I cannot confirm but strongly suggest that this is, indeed, the optimal solution. Great job ShesChardcore and ViGadeomes

Out of interest, did you rerun the bot on 8-2/8-3 with the new RNG values from the improved 4-2? Is this something that would potentially be worth doing if not? I don't really know how the bot works in practice but I wanted to point it out in case.
I did re-run the bot on the 8 stage all over again but no gains. Unfortunately, there's practically nothing that can be done regarding lag as it has to do with where and how the enemies behave and that's determined exclusively by the frame at which you arrive, as far as I know. Nevertheless, I don't discount ever finding more frames :)

Also, something minor: traditionally, SMB1 TASes end when Mario touches the last axe. Any reason why this TAS doesn't? Not necessarily against it or anything.
TASes end when input ends, For this romhack, you don't have to hold right or A for very long for Mario to touch the final axe, so input can end earlier than Mario touching the axe.
The final encode (if the movie gets published) will contain the full ending sequence. For the temp encode I wanted to reflect how early inputs end.

What a bummer. I had actually found it pretty clever to just wait for death to come to you in the final stages. I wonder if this movie could still be considered as alternate 'no credits' category. Furthermore, what if we ask the devs at Festa to remove the need for an input in an updated version of the game

Thanks! I'll see to add some decent sub notes. It was getting late last night and just wanted to get this sub in.

That's amazing! I thought there was nothing left to squeeze. May I add you as co-author and request a judge to replace the movie file? If so, I'll create a comparison video using your movie, instead of mine.

If it wasn't for Samsara's response, I wouldn't have noticed this at all. Although I'm really digging this TAS challenge as promotion thing, I really don't see much of a TASable game here. There's just not much complexity to work with. Nevertheless, I'll give it a go after I'm done with my current WIP. I'd love to see more of these coming! But to echo Samsara's plea, the submission needs to be already the highest quality/effort possible. Not only to avoid over burdening the judges but also to make this more of a challenge, i.e, we've got to beat the very game dev's very best effort! A refreshing concept... I'll be grinding those frames soon

Even as a old-time DOS gamer, I had never paid any attention to Quest games. That is, until I fell into the OneShortEye youtube docuseries' rabbit hole. I knew the explanation for this game's any% solution by heart, but ignored how much more content there was to the game. It's so cool to see the max score% being TASed, with the evil witch's ending and all! I'll vote yes on this one, because I know all the science that goes behind these movies, which makes them all the more impressive. Hope to see a youtube explanation of this movie on OSE's or your channel sometime =P

Hey all, This is to let you know I'm making the latest version of my TASing bot available to the general community. This version supports multiple platforms (NES, Genesis, SNES, Prince of Persia) and can be extended to others as needed. https://github.com/SergioMartin86/jaffarPlus The documentation is scant so any efforts to use it will require a steep learning curve for new users. Ideally, if there's enough interest I can dedicate some time to write a more thorough documentation. Hope this helps TASers in the future to produce even more polished movies.

Imagine spending your last quarter in this game in arcade in the early 90's. Suddenly an 8 year old kid comes, challenges you, beats you immediately with what happens in minute 06:00 in this TAS and leaves without uttering a word. Yes vote.

Just ran this movie using my bot to calibrate it in preparation of running the whole game. Found out Challenger's movie is already bot-perfect. The movie I've uploaded below is 10 frames faster, only due to emulator differences (mine is snes9x; Challenger's is BSNES). Clap Clap Challenger, you win this round ò_ó https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638045669180422409

Well, this movie uses another obscure yet very legal move: the "En croissant". Used often in the French opening =P

@ShesChardcore Thanks for your comment! @Alyosha Thanks as always for your console verifications and nice comments! @Patashu I'm open to receiving other challenges, as long as they are somewhat well defined. Hope to make more discoveries in the future. @ feos I don't have much of an idea myself, but it seems to be an incorrectly indexed access. When you destroy the asteroids, they turn into smaller pieces -- so object deletion and creation happens in the same frame. One of these indexes must, upon death, override the access to the next object in line (the first eye) putting it's object type to zero. @ ktwo I found FatRatKnight in gamefaqs, and he asks:
Also, a brief look over the Solar Jetman run has a single question in mind: Any particular reason why you took the full damage terrain bumps in the maze of P12? At about frame 34200, just shy of 9 minutes on the video, there is what I call a "wrong deflect" off the corner of the terrain, in order to slow the downward momentum. Unlike what I've done in my TAS, the damage was not prevented by a light bump into a convenient wall just before the wrong deflection. I've made use of the temporary terrain invincibility from a weak hit to stop a much worse one.

I fully support adding you and J.Y. into the authors list. However, I prefer that the judge does it since I don't have the full picture of the case. As said before, I'm just learning now you were involved in making the movie Scum sent me at the beginning of my work. Regarding Scum quitting, I've got nothing to say -- I'm only responsible for my own actions. He needs to be added back into the authors list, if anything, for archival correctness purposes.

This is something that can happen when a non-public WIP is delayed for a long time on a competitive game such as this. Therefore, I can totally empathize with Aiqiyou and J.Y.'s position. I also empathize with Scumtron, which is one of the most talented and perfectionistic TASers on this site. I hope someone will empathize with me as well: I just want to bring this work to light for everyone to enjoy. I defer to the judge(s) the decision of defining who the authors should be and which order they should be placed. Whatever the case is, I think Scumtron has to be in first place. I am fine being placed in any other position.
This reminds me of my NES Jackal 2 players TAS with zyr2288. When I mentioned in Submission #6640, I improved 355 frame with zyr2288's 2 player TAS, which wasn't submitted it on TASV. ThunderAxe31 asked me: Did you ask to zyr2288 if he wanted to be included in the author list of this submission? I think this is a very good example. When I complete the TAS and prepare to submit it using the WIP not disclosed by others, It is necessary for me to ask for the other party's opinions, including whether he's satisfied with the current TAS and the specific matters of the submitted content. I think this is respect for each other. But it seems that you haven't done so. In the WIP I listed before, the author's name is Scumtron, J.Y and me. I think it is a prejudice that just because TAS has been improved a few frames, the names of me and J. Y can be deleted from it. Suppose that the TAS is finally published, and only the name of eien86 is included. If any judge intends to do so, I have nothing to say.
This is the first time I've seen this WIP. Back then, Scumtron sent me a different .bk file over discord. I had no idea you were involved in making it, otherwise I would have included you. I apologize for this omission, but you gotta understand I had no idea.

To avoid confusion, @GoddessMaria: the movie file above is a proposal for an alternative ending that ends the proper game faster and might one day become a viable strat. However, it does not produce a faster movie than the one submitted, so please do not replace it.
