I am going to say that I agree with Saturn on the Ceres time. You guys should use the 49'20 timer, even if it costs 7 real time frames. In fact, I would optimize every single door for in-game time. I know this sounds crazy, but the difference between a 24 end game time and a 23 end game time is much much closer than we all could have imagined. Even with my specially designed realtime route, I think the 23 is possible. I am going to be submitting my run soon, so we will know then how much more time needs to be saved. It would be a great day when we see a real time oriented run, achieve the best in-game timer also. As for draygon, I think we all know about his little secret now ;) High Jump boots are a very easy skip. The amount of time is costs to collect them if far far greater than the amount of time they will save later on. Remember that the maridia shinespark is possible without high jump boots. My new run will not contain a single pause menu visit, which alone saves 6 seconds.

dude that was sweet :D I will post some comments after I fully analyze the whole video. Kudos on using that blue mockball that I posted a few months ago, was it actually faster? Saturn told me that it was slower, but I didn't feel like confirming it. here are my notes: 42500 - Is it possible to keep phantoon from moving after he is killed? I never bothered to get this to work either. I hate this guy. You got EXCELLENT drops, btw. 43800 - I think you might have been able to perform a clean mockball out of phantoons room and into the little tunnel (that's the way I did it). The bounce seemed pretty slow, though I could be wrong. 43900 - You ran on top of the robot's head! Thats was cool, and something I didn't think to test. Was it faster? 45100 - Might have been better to get a lower boost and start the jump before exiting into the main room. 45666 - I am surprised you opted to jump here instead of killing the little ball. I suppose you needed those super missiles really bad? 45700 - The diagonal shot in the shootable blocks was really clever! Do you know how much faster that was? 45780 - Upward CWJ for the win :) Glad you caught this one. My run has a few of these in it too. 46350 - You could have damage boosted off the electricity in this room. It saves alot of time. There are 2-3 different spots that will work. It is a big timesaver only if you have the energy to spare. 46970 - Glad to see you implemented this CWJ that I had mentioned before. It is sweet. 47600 - I too realized that running down into the water is significantly faster than jumping early. 51850 - This was really clever too. I missed this one. How much faster was that mockball? 53700 - I would love it if we could figure out a way to descend down this room without having to unmorph. 54090 - I knew about this strategy already, but isn't it 20-30 frames slower? Unless my test was really shitty. Maybe you did it just because of the drops? 54650 - Was the bomb tech faster than the unmorph tech? I never bothered to test with my 1.51 run, I just went with the bomb tech because it was different :P 55300 - Moozooh found a way to kill the skree and collect a free item drop while still executing the damage boost. I guess you did not know about this? 55590 - No spike boost? I think this room could have been faster with a CWJ. I realize you had to charge your beam, but it seems like it would have been possible. 61000 - Strange turn around you did here.. wouldn't the spin jump turnaround have been faster? 62000 - Clearing that ledge with the damage boost would have saved a ton of time. I can confirm that it is possible, but I did not test the amount of time that the set up requires. 63800 - Strange turn around animation again.. Overall this run is excellent, thus far.

Though I haven't found a good use for it yet, it is possible to do a walljump while samus is facing a wall. It only works on walls where samus is left of the wall. Here is a short example of it. You made need to watch it in slow motion to see it though. Sorry if this was already known. here

the only thing I can think that may allow for a dual CWJ would be some strange left/right quirk. I have tested the left/right up/down stuff in this game, but not to a serious extent. Holding left+right does change the chances of a CWJ being possible. Mostly if you hold both buttons, Samus will not go into her (I am about to walljump) pose until much later. It is a weird phenomenon and should be tested further.

I am still working on the run, but I hit a snag. I just got screwed with the phantoon drops, so I am trying to find a way to collect missile drops without losing much time. I didn't compare times, but I am gonna venture a guess and say that you are slightly ahead of me at this point (in-game time). Though a direct comparison is not possible because I did not collect the pink brinstar tank.

hey Cpadolf, you rock man :D The run is looking real tight now. I see you implemented all of the suggestions I put on your submission thread. I am still unsure if it is wise to collect the pink brinstar missile pack, as it saves very little time in the end (or may be slower?). I also think that when you unmorph right before the charge beam, it is faster to land on the very bottom floor instead of the second step. The only trick I have to offer at this point can be seen here. Since you did opt to collect the pink brinstar missile pack, it seems like it would be a good strategic choice.

It's an awesome WIP kriole. In fact it looks almost identical to the old preview movies saturn had made for his run. I am however saddened and surprised that you opted to use a considerably slower route. Especially because it was a discovery that you made which made the other route possible. A more streamlined route would have saved easily 2 in-game minutes. Your awesome ridley battle only served to prove that you had collected too much stuff. Samus was TOO strong at this point. I would have preferred if you used the other route and had 1 less e-tank at your disposal, which would have made the battle more intense.

okay, that's understandable.. I just thought you were actually gonna put in stuff that was truly new to all of us TASers, not the youtube crowd. Either way, it is cool. I might even make my own demo video sometime, since I have made dozens of test SMVs which I never bothered to post.

Nice music to video timing. Great music choice as always. You are an awesome movie maker, Saturn :) Though I am kinda curious about what in the video was new. I didn't see anything that wasn't already known. The only thing that people might not have seen was the ice beam area entrance without blue suit... but this was something that I wrote in detail when cpadolf submitted his run. Which of these demos would save time in the any% run?

I didn't spend even close to a 1/4th of a year in that room. What are you talking about Saturn? Please refer to my old 1.51 wip to see how I clearly did not give a shit about optimizing that room. Great job Taco!

Saturn: Yeah not only did I know about this, JXQ also knew about this. Unfortunately he figured it out after he had finished his v2 run. It is actually a pretty simple strategy, and the only reason I did not use it in my old run was because I foolishly thought that the arm pumps would save more time than it would cost to do the walljump. I think due to laziness I never tested it back then. Luckily this time around, I am testing out as many strategies as possible and also timing them.

moozooh, I was going full speed (2.0) in the purple diagonal room with my new strategy, not (1.6). I never let go of the run button, if that is what you were implying. Sorry if I misunderstood. For those who don't know, I found a strategy to clear the room without letting go of the run button or the left directional. Unfortunately I must skip a bunch of armpumps or I would run past the item drops. Despite being only 1 frame faster than Cpadolf's strategy, it should be more pleasing to the eye.

This trick is pretty sweet, and I see you put much work into finding the optimal score accumulation. I give it a weak yes vote; JXQ has already mentioned that the overhead levels can be done much faster if both directionals are held at once. I know this to be true, as I have already begun testing for my v2 run. FYI, if you double tap L or R, you can rotate at twice the speed. Though I cannot confirm this, I think the level 5 boss is improvable. The crush gun might have helped here.

Saturn, I have no intention of starting over just to implement an 18 frame timesaver. I've spent too much time on this run as is. Though your run might beat mine by 2-3 seconds in the end, I am still going to finish it because I will be done soon, where as it will be many months/years before you finish. Great OTES strategy btw, very creative of you :)

Yeah, I do think it was Saturn's excellent videos that lead me to using the beserker. I was searching all over the internet to find strategies and stuff for my run, and his movies were full of good info.

sweet WIP kriole. Other than a few tiny frame savers here and there, I don't see any large mistakes. I did notice somethings about the route however; Since you did not use a power bomb to collect the charge beam, you should have collected it the first time through. It might have saved you some missiles. The other thing that bothered me was that you skipped the blue brinstar energy tank. I don't think you will have enough energy to kill ridley now, unless you use the pause glitch. Going to blue brinstar would have also given you another PB tank and missile tank. looking forward to your next wip.

maybe moozooh was talking about real time frames, since the size of the Samus hitbox has a direct change on the lag during door transitions.

Lookin good Kriole. I am happy to see that you are not just copying other people's input, but rather trying things on your own and showing off some great intuition. This Wip has nice stylistic choices and overall good optimization. Keep it up :) As for the route, I think you pretty much have it down. I can only suggest that you maybe skip a few of the missiles tanks that I outlined in my route. The only reason I thought that many tanks were needed was because I thought it saved a good amount of time on the ridley battle. I think Saturn mentioned that the best form of attack in that battle is the wave/pb combo, so maybe a few tanks can be skipped. The torizo exit looks cool, but I am pretty sure it is slightly slower. I think I managed to exit the room like that a few months ago, before I found the most optimal way of doing it. You can refer to Cpadolf's submission to see it.

Sweet run.. voting yes. This game > castlevania 4. The musical remixes of the old school tunes are all amazing, particularly bloody tears. The graphics are amazing as well, the fire background in the first level really looks beautiful. Of course the controls feel just like the old nes games, but that just adds to the charm of this game.

it has been a very long time, but I recall it to be very slightly faster (I no longer have the smvs file). The spark has no practical use in the 100% run though, because energy is low and must be used on other more important sparks.

My progress status is pretty bad unfortunately :/ I seem to lack motivation at the moment. Currently working on the later parts of crateria. I suspect that once I reach green brinstar, the run will start to pick up pace again. If I really tried hard enough I could finish the entire run within a week, but I am just so bored with the game at this moment that I find it hard to spend time TASing it. It will get done though, and it will be awesome when it is done ;)
