Evilchen: Beautiful avi you made there. I think the music was pretty fitting for the game. The item% counter was a great touch too. Thanks a lot for making it :) Tonski: Yeah, those were 2 of the new CWJs that I added to my new movie. Good job finding them. Fully optimized they save a really nice amount of frames.

Tub: I am restarting mostly because it would be impossible to finish the run using 1.51. I started getting desyncs after every single room. There was a couple tricks I missed the first time around, saving ~1 second total. So these little tricks help alleviate some of the pain of starting over.

I agree, let's keep all posts constructive from now on. I have nothing against Saturn, I just wanted an explanation. He sorta gave one, so I am not gonna post about it anymore. Once I find the time I will restart my any% run. I will aim solely for real time once again, and it should be below 40 minutes. In the mean time Cpadolf will probably submit his run, so you will have something to watch ZeXr0.

I never said it was one of those on the list, but it is some sort of technical change, not an optmization. Chose your words better. I know it because when I posted about the CWJ in the Old MB room, you said something like "Hero, you found one of my optimizations". That is how I know that. Like JXQ, I also don't give a shit. I doubt I would even use it in my run unless it was faster in real time (which I am pretty sure it isn't).

For the record, I believe you Saturn. I just don't believe that your run is simply "more optimized". You did something differently: 1. You either used a different steam boost. 2. You used an extra steam boost. 3. You know of some unknown method for increasing speed slightly. 4. You know of some unknown method of walljumping differently I remember when you told me that the reason you were 30 frames ahead of JXQ up to the torizo was just because yours was more optimized. Well in truth, yours was not more optimized, you just used an otherwise unknown technique to gain the frames.

With an 8 frame realtime delay, a 49'07 is possible. The following movie uses the supposedly "perfect steam boost" and has all the subpixels optimized. I don't see any room for improvement unless a new boost is found, or some unknown technique is discovered. If anyone out there thinks they can improve this movie, please by all means tell me where is it improvable. Since I make this post with video evidence, this is the best known escape time possible. All other claims are of no concern unless they too provide proof. "49'07

vanish cap under the moat :D seems like a very plausible improvement, that is unless the water puts an immediate halt to the built up speed.

I am starting to doubt the mom skip is possible now. I spent alot of time on it and I could not even gain 1 pixel, let alone the 2 needed for the skip. I wonder what could be done differently to make it possible? here is my current attempt (same distance that inichi got)

yeah, not much time, but enough to make Saturn's run imperfect. Not to mention the catnap jump which he forgot to use also. On top of that I also use a strategy that was 10 frames faster than his in the 2nd red brinstar shaft. Also, I found a couple new techniques which can save ~20 frames over moozooh's wip before even getting to the red brinstar shaft. Of course moozooh's torizo skip is much more of a time saver, but all these little things do add up over time. In case you were wondering 90% of my new techniques involve the CWJ. A total of 24 CWJs will be in my new run, each saving on average 15 frames.

Saturn: The only problem with your lame claims of perfection is that we will never see them. You started working on your run almost 2 years ago, and guess what.... you have to start over anyway! Thanks to a discovery by moozooh, and a discovery by myself. At this point in time it is just pointless for you to make a run. Cpadolf is using the exact same route as you, so almost all of your tricks have been spoiled anyway. You hope to beat his time by what... 10 seconds? The shock factor is gone at this point, and no one gives a shit about the escape timers other than hardcore in-game oriented speed runnners. The casual viewer here does not care. And I am 100% certain there are some new discoveries I have made that you do not know about.

I don't think you should assume that I am automatically gonna beat your run, or that Saturn will automatically beat my run. There are strategies that I know which you and Saturn don't know about, there are strategies you know which Saturn and I don't know, and there are strategies that Saturn knows which you and I don't know about. Who ever submits their run last has a natural advantage. Comparing TASing abilities is just pointless at this time. I really see no difference in the quality of work among almost all of us. Also, obsoletion based on more precision is a bad idea. It would be impossible to know which run is more optimized, since they would be collecting different items and using different routes.

Great to hear inichi :D I am eagerly awaiting to see what insane new strategies you develop. It is amazing how this game can still manage to provide new surprises. I think there are a few other places where a scene skip may be possible. The escape from Guardia castle for example, as well as the very likely mom escape. I will try to poke around and see if I can find any new strategies for you to use.

You make some good points Cpadolf. I guess I wouldn't mind seeing your run obsolete mine just because I know yours will be of superior quality. The only beef I have with it is that the new standard would be in-game time instead of realtime, which opens up a whole new set of problems. I do like the variety that the in-game route offers, but it can become very bloated with realtime sacrifices that kill the flow of the run. I know your run will have good flow because you did not use excessive pause menus, but a future runner may enter the pause menu a thousand times just to beat your in-game time. With a solid goal of realtime there is no guess work, it is plain and simple "as fast as possible, no matter what".

Yeah, but if a person was to truly truly aim for in-game time, it would consist of seeing the pause screen every 5 seconds. Think about it: 4 pause screens for gravity jumps in maridia 20 seconds of realtime sacrificed to gain 40 frames of in-game time! about 8 pause screen to turn off the high jump boots when they cause a slight slowdown in a room. about 40 seconds wasted right there to save about 3 seconds of in-game time. The horribly shitting looking mother brain battle with the murder beam. 2 more pause screens plus horrendous graphic glitches. Extreme backtracking routes. Excessive door entries. Collecting missile packs that save 10 frames of in-game time but cost 7 real time seconds per pack. Making real time delays to get a good ceres escape timer. The list goes on and on......

Cpadolf: Remember that I aimed solely for real time, as that is the preferred method of timing at this website. If you get below a 40:58, I would say submit it. Otherwise it would be considered slower than mine even if your in-game clock was better. This was an issue I spoke to bisqwit about when I first submitted my run. Though I would not be opposed to having both runs published together, they should not be directly compared. Had I been aiming for in-game time, I would have gotten a 24 in my initial run, even without the torizo skip. The problem is that collecting all those extra items only saves a tiny bit of in-game time but cost a ton of real time. It was made clear to me that real time is more important here, while in-game is more important at the SDA and M2K2.

Wow inichi, Awesome job!! Those strategies you used in the cathedral were incredible. I don't even know how you got the enemies to cooperate like that. The mom escape seems very possible. I will look more into this. Thanks for posting it :) BTW, you seem to have some very good TASing skills. Are you considering doing a TAS of this game? I haven't really spent much time on it because I have been working on my new Super Metroid run lately. I think it would be cool if you made a a full TAS of this to obsolete my run, you have more detailed knowledge than I do. here is my memory watcher file if you are interested.

Never said it was about duplicating someone else's work. Clearly I know how to find new things on my own ;) I just said that you happened to have the best escape timer delays. Since I go for real time, this doesn't even apply to me. I am just trying to help out the other TASers, because everyone else goes for in-game time.

Yes, JXQ and I realized many months ago that the timer and steam are greatly influence by realtime, not in-game time. We attempted to hex in frames into my V2 run until I obtained perfect steam in the 4th room, but the delays got so big that it was not worth it in the end. Clearly Saturn found a key to obtaining perfect steam with a very small delay, but without knowing the 2 different spots he delayed (the exact amount of frames per spot, is what I mean), it is impossible to duplicate.

Just for fun I have come up with my own RBO route. I don't plan on making a run, but I think if anyone wants to try they should use this route. It is different than Saturn's because it choses to fight crocomire, while his route is a no mini boss route. I think that the grapple beam would save maridia from being a boring piece of crap to watch. The crocomire energy tank also eliminates the need to return to brinstar after collecting the speed booster. here is the map Here is the item list: 1. morphball 2. missile #1 3. bombs 4. energy tank #1 5. super missile #1 6. reserve tank #1 7. missile #2 8. missile #2 9. missile #4 10.power bomb #1 11.power bomb #2 12.energy tank #2 13.missile #5 14.missile #6 15.energy tank #3 16.super missile #2 17.power bomb #3 18.super missile #3 19.missile #7 20.charge beam 21.power bomb #4 22.missile #8 23.energy tank #4 24.spazer beam 25.ice beam 26.energy tank #5 27.missile #9 28.high jump boots 29.speed booster 30.missile #10 31.missile #11 32.wave beam 33.missile #12 34.reserve tank #2 35.missile #13 36.energy tank #6 37.grapple beam 38.energy tank #7 39.energy tank #8 40.missile #14 41.energy tank #9 42.missile #15
