Ok, so I have been thinking about one of my favorite levels of the game again, and messing around a bunch and have a couple questions. It's back to VD2. The idea is to take the key for the regular exit. I have no idea how the time this would take compared to the vine route because there is a lot of complex stuff involved that I can't do. It sure would look cool though. If you can not catch up to the key when you drop it in the water, I believe it is possible to key jump without a wall to push the key agains in midair (which means beneath the map). Simply press DOWN, release the key, press --> until you are standing on it, then jump (and grab the key, you still need it). I was also wondering about the possibity of using a key to push yourself through a cieling the same way it is used to push through an invisible block. There are no applications in SMW that I could find if it is possible though. The idea is to drop the key near the cieling and land on it so Mario is bumped up by it then jump to go through. I doubt it will work. Having a Yoshi might improve chances... might not. And I need technical help turning THE infinity BANDIT into my avatar. I don't know how to resize it or where to upload the picture so I can link to it for my avatar. If you would like to help me please do it in a pm so we don't go off topic any more than I just did. I also would not like to lose any picture quality (not that there is much to lose).

Ok. It is possible to pass through a floor with the spring. It is possible to continue flight when you grab a spring (although probably not in this situation because Mario's velocity becomes zero when he grabs it). However, to fix that just do the trick labeled as "jump many times in the air" or something like that (once before you grab it then again after you grab it). A couple times I have been able to fly after bouncing off the spring, although I am unable to determine what caused it (I think I had just started the dive animation and then Mario bounced up straight like he is supposed to, then continued diving... something like that maybe). In special situations this might be able to give Mario a bunch of height fast while flying. Special because a lot of horizontal velocity, and therefore time, would be lost. There is only one problem left to solve...hopefully. When you bounce beneath the floor, you then bounce back up above the floor. Duh. I don't know why I didn't think of that before. There might still be applications in SDW, but unless someone figures how to bounce off a spring without bouncing then I think VoB4 is useless. I still can't really say that it would work though, because I made sure he can pass through a floor (no vertical wall to push through), and I know he bounces back up (vertical wall). I don't know what the invisible wall would do: push sideways, or up (if we didn't bounce)? An example of a possible isolated solution is placing a "hard" item such as a key/spring/pswitch on the ground as you fall through it so when Mario tries to bounce back up he is blocked and stays underneath. This can't happen in VoB4 because the only "hard" item is that spring. And I'm glad you like your new background.

THankyou for finding speed memory. It seems my coin message worked :D Now testing my guessing will be much easier for you guys. (I always though midspeed probably did that... but not to many applications. Did the meter increment the way we thought it would? And I'm glad you guys love my pictures.

1. Read Number Two. 2. From what I see at the site I get these maps from, and then what I see in the game, the textures in every level extend the height of 1 small Mario beneath the screen. 3. Me neither. 4. It does look doubtful. Most things I post do. 5. Me neither. 6. K 7. So was I. Just hoping there was something I didn't know. I know the picture was messy, but losing flight shouldn't make it impossible. Take the shell that is part of the left eye of the face and bring it with you when you push yourself through the vertical wall. Then bounce off the shell up to the key, and key jump back out. My only two doubts for this trick are going through a vertical wall, and whether or not it will save time (even when you are slowed by picking up the spring). And of course, this is only necessary if it is not possible to just simply fly under the map.

For a nifty trick I am dreaming up I need the answer to a couple of questions. 1)Is the reason VD2 trick was only possible for the key exit because it is impossible to fly under water? 2)If so does the same apply to lava? 3)How much time would be saved/lost if no Yoshi was used in VoB3? 4)Is it possible to Use a spring to push Mario through a vertical wall!!!? 5)If the answer to (1) is yes, how much time is saved/lost with no Yoshi in VoB4? 6)Is it possible to bounce off a spring and still maintain p flight? 7)Is it possible to grab a spring in p flight and not be stopped by it (maybe spinning helps)? I hope I asked all the questions I meant to, but here's why. It might not even save time, but it would be Groovy if it did. And just for fun. About the Way Cool pictures which might be a bit Outrageous... I'm in a Funky mood right now.

Did you finish the special levels yet? @yarbles I don't know why they show that screen shot with that quote... wrong movie. They should have a picture of Mon Mothma or perhaps the 3d death star hologram.

I know that in FFL2 (I have it on gameboy) I found this wierd glitch that allowed me to select my trash can in inventory twice like you would a potion and then use it on my people to increase their agility. It would work for a while (I once got one of my mutants up to agility of 73 from his original) before double selecting the trash can gave me that error noise. I don't know what caused it and I only have two guesses: performing a certain sequence of button presses, and dropping the gameboy one too many times. It has happened to me in Venus World, The Nasty Dungeon and inside Ki and maybe some other places, but I don't think that has anything to do with it. As for character selection I have found that monsters are virtually useless for endgame bosses (they were for me anyway). I never managed to kill Apollo with 4 monsters+dad. For endgame bosses I have found that mutants are the best, and you could manipulate them to gain the magic ability Flare in several item slots (that way it is not necessary to have 50000 GP to spend). So I think maybe 2 monsters and 2 mutants would be good, and actually make the mutants good. Is it possible to manipulate the game so the mutants gain 1 stat point and HP every battle? Once they have good stats Blizzard and Flame will kill pretty much anything accept immunes and bosses in one hit. For Odin (iirc) you already have the magi pegasus I think it was called (the sword) and one of the monsters could use that while the mutants use flare. The other monster could either be dead or a healer unless there is some better use for him. I hope these are good ideas, and will save further discussion until I am sure it is needed (about strategy and such, as much as I can help). Especially since FFL2 might get a different topic than this one.

Well that's wierd, I can't get it to work either. Would've sworn it did, but apparently my memory is bad... maybe I'll figure it out later. To redeem myself, I did get a wrap around to work by moving back and forth so Yoshi faces you (the viewer) and then eat the one up on your left just as you exit to your right. Some sort of white puff cloud appears on the left side of the screen. And I see someone got the Simpsons reference (although I don't watch the show much... maybe twice a year...), but nobody got my Star Wars reference in my picture. Next time I guess I'll have to use a more obvious quote. No need for the p switch.

In that case, this isn't the only time when objects and textures in the game mysteriously teleport. I believe it is because when there is action the game wants to display what is occuring, but it can't display it where it occurs so it shows up on the other side of the screen. An easy example is in the top secret area, and another example is in DP1. These show the wrap-around affect of the Mario animations. This helps explain why the noteblocks appear at the top of the screen, but it does not explain why the noteblocks exist. Tomacco does. And as a side note, Mario died in excess of 50 times yesterday trying to teach me everything he could about these noteblocks.

I can't tell, are you being serious? @JXQ I thought about making him eat the fish that represents Mario, but then it would be too obvious that I was having fun. Did you find the message in that picture I sent you? And if so, did it work?

If standing mode is only required for one frame, wouldn't you be just as well off catching the wall (like you would for a wall jump) as you would using the p switch? This way you don't have to take the time to pick it up, but maybe it's just not possible. And besides, if you hit the p switch that way wouldn't the ? block appear under your feet anyway? And that multiple p switch glitch sounds really wierd. While on the topic of wierd seemingly useless glitches, check this out.

Maybe there is some flaw in the cape or something. When I do this level as small Mario it is possible to beat it with game clock reading 261.
I figured out this is because Mario with a cape is taller than small Mario, so the amount of time it takes him to exit the pipe at the beginning of the level (during which the timer is already going) is the difference.

I think it's a shame that there's so little interest for this run.
Not true, I'm interested. But I already told you pretty much everything I can think of to help. I still want to know if flying under the map worked in VD2.

Actually, I was talking about that for the TAS if it is still in progress, which ti doesn't appear to be. I might try to add it later. This is how I am doing.

Did this die? If not, I came up with a way to maybe bring an earlier shell in VD1. When running under the yellow blocks, kill the first shell there with the first shell in the level, then pick up the second shell. When running towards the 3rd shell drop the one you are holding right before they collide and you will be able to kill the 3rd shell and pick the 2nd one back up. The only problem is I don't know if the 2nd shell will stay closed long enough to perform the rest of the level. If anyone was confused by this, I will make a pretty picture.

In my experience it is impossible. I'm sure you know this, but make sure you bounce off the shell at the last frame possible. It might also help to make sure you are as close to the middle of the shell as possible. EDIT: Or maybe try to be beyond the middle, if possible.

Time will be on the horizontal axis if you look at a reflection of the graph in a mirror and then turn your head so everthing vertical appears horizontal.

Approximately 25-26 months I think. The forum is a few months younger. Ps: I don't vouch for the factuality of that graph.
The graph I guess should say Days Forum has Existed for y-axis then. I was unaware that there was a difference. Other than that it is mostly accurate. Information was obtained here: http://tasvideos.org/forum/memberlist.php I will vouch for the factuality of the graph based on the data in memberlist except for slight error which I think is three days. Something that wouldn't be noticeable in a graph like that. The data I used ended at 2006-01-25 17:08:40.
