Ouch. And do you have to be in a p-run? Or can Mario be moving relatively slow?
Wow this suddenly became even more impressive of an idea. VD1 and VS1 small? This is nuts!
The run is small. Less levels is faster. Nuts is me. So here goes (tricks as they will be in my run, and as I believe to be fastest ways with explanations and other routes that might be possible on TAS.) If I say something like "possible path" I don't know if it works, just a way to try. Yoshi's Island levels are up to you guys. DP1 you already have, but your video is not the fastest way obviously. So here is a picture: http://img15.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=282bb_DP1_secret_exit.JPG It is also possible to hit the jumping-winged-shell-koopa twice and grab the shell before you hit the ground (not in the picture, the one you are carrying). DS1 swim under the key area. I grab the p-switch, but on a TAS time might be saved by grabbing one of the blue-damage-bricks-that-flash to help you get to the p-switch faster. Getting the p-balloon for the shell just takes too long. DP3- http://img108.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=2d0e2_DP3_tricky.JPG DP4- http://img20.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=7b2dc_DP4_tricky.JPG Morton-If you can get to secret pipe small I am amazed. More likely: it is possible to get p-run in first room, just press left then right really quick right before the second mini-stomp and you get p-run. Then spin jump up the rotating stairs. Don't fall through by accident, I never have. Room too have fun. Room 3 see if you can wall jump at the very beginning so you don't have to wait 10million seconds for the walls to move back out of the way. VD1- This picture is really old, ignore part one you will be taking a different shell. http://img141.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=1e680_SMW_help3.a_VD1.JPG This picture is really old too. Except for taking a different shell, it is the way I do it. http://img13.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=67a5d_SMW_help3.b_VD1.JPG The earliest buzzy-beetle you can grab I think is the third one under the yellow blocks. Kill the first one under the blocks with the first one in the level, spin stomp the second one, regular jump onto the third one while holding left and you can manage to stomp it without going too high to be able to grab him. Another way this might be done is to do like the DP2 pipe trick in 100%TAS where you bounce off the shell and get up to the vine. If you can somehow manage to get up to the vine box without opening it and still make it to the key, cool. VS1- http://img41.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=282c0_VS1_two_possibilities.JPG SW2-Swim with Yoshi SW3-kick blue up to kill cloud-man and take his cloud. SW4-Ask JXQ. It is possible to p-run all the way up to the point where the hardness starts. I hope that clears everything up. And as a bonus, next time you get bored in school (or at work), try this http://img130.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc154&image=f05e0_Card_house1.JPG . Hooray for 7th class of the day with nothing to do.

I'm wondering if it's possible to, after bouncing off the green turtle, kicking the red shell left in mid-air to hit the key-block, have it bounce back, and be able to land on it instead of having to make that almost impossible jump directly from green shell to platform. I'll try that out sometime soon
Sounds harder.
Although you've practiced this game a lot, something you may not know about it (that I learned from emulated play) is that if you hold the jump button when falling, your falling speed is slightly slower than if you weren't holding jump. So if you are having trouble timing the SW4 fall, try holding jump more or less than usual after falling.
I know about the fall speed and take advantage of it a bunch. SW4 fall is just freaking hard. Do you know how big of a frame window I have to fall after the green turtle falls?
VD1 worse than DP1 - which exit on VD1? If it's the secret exit without the Red Switch Palace, I can see that being pretty tough / impossible. What was your old route? And one more question....what do you plan on doing for Star World 1 if you are small (and can't spin-jump through the blocks)?
VD1 timing is easier but need to be more precise. It is the secret exit with no red palace. Old route? I would get the green palace rather than go to the water level. The current route is YI, DP1 secret exit, DS1, DGH, DP3, DP4, Castle 2, VD1 secret exit, VS1 secret exit, SW2 through to Bowser. SW1 is not in the run, that is why it is allowed on SDA as a different category because it uses a different route and strategies. If you like and no one objects I can show you what I believe to be the fastest route through all these levels. Some of them are pretty tricky and if you miss the shortcut you sometimes lose large amounts of time.

jimsfriend, in your run, are you allowed to: 1) get Yoshi 2) use baby Yoshi 3) get a color switch 4) get a starman 5) get an air balloon 6) get a midpoint post, then immediately and intentionally get injured? I was trying the game small tonight, but I didn't know what the exact rules were. Just a slight change, like being able to get an air balloon or not, can really change the level order.
1)No 2)Yes, but no need 3)Yes, but no need 4)Unsure, never really talked about it much, but no need 5)You mean the cloud on SW3? Yes. If you mean the p-balloon that makes Mario fat... no need so wasn't discussed. 6)No
Oh wait, so Jimfriend's run isn't a TAS, it's a regular run or something? How would that work? I'm confused? I thought this site was just for TASs...
This site is just for TASs. My run is on console and limited by reflex and skill. Muscle memory helps reduce these limits. My run is being talked about on this site because after I helped Fabian with some route and level suggestions for the 96 star run he and JXQ helped me. @JXQ Thanks. And thanks for help on those 2 levels. DP1 shouldn't be so bad, just SW4 is a killer. It always was no matter what the route. VD1 is worse than DP1 as hard as that might be to believe.

I think it wouldn't be fair to jimsfriend, who I understand have worked very hard with his run.
I agree. I have worked very hard on my run (it isn't an exageration to say I played an average of at least 2 hours every day for the past 6 months, some of the tricks are _very_ hard). On a happier note, the DP1 secret exit is coming along quite nicely. I have succeeded once and almost succeeded a couple of others. With a little more practice it should be one of the easier tricks in the run.

Well darn, I was hoping small mario run would remain TAS free until I was done, but since it isn't, I might as well help you with what I know since you guys helped me. I think I have pretty much the fastest route through all levels figured out, plus a few TAS tricks that you could use that I can not use (inside individual levels to cut off a little time). The biggest difference between your run and mine will probably be bowsers castle. I use door 8 because it is 100% random-free while door 7 is almost certain death for me. If you want my help let me know how you want it. I can explain the entire run as I see it on console+TAS tricks that might be doable or I can go level by level as you proceed through the run. And for those of you looking forward to my run and don't want to see spoilers I suggest you don't read any further posts by me in this topic.

Thanks for the reply Fabian, it probably is just a graphics glitch. Another thing I thought up that has probably been tested before: if you are in a p-run and doing the hop trick then land at the very last frame of a level, would you be able to jump on the first frame of the next level to continue the p-run? If it would work anywhere I would think after fortresses and castles because in normal levels you cut the tape and then walk slowly. In castles and fortresses there is no Mario movement after the level finishes except on the world map. If we are lucky it uses the walking slowly to erase the p-run rather than automatically calling it zero at the beginning of every level. Maybe not castles because of the Mario destroys the castle scene. Saw this on the SMW tricks page
Variant: Pass through floors (SMW) In some levels (caves), ducking in a space that is becoming too small may sometimes result in passing through the floor. TODO: Explain better
_In some levels (caves), ducking in a space that is becoming too small and spin jumping at the right moment may sometimes result in passing through the floor. This can also be used with a big Mario (feather, fireflower, mushroom of peach) when in a short corridor (the height of a small Mario). Simply spin jump and it will sometimes result in passing through the floor._ (My proposal for what it could say). Another thing that might be worth looking into is whether flying through a space that is becoming too small and then spinning at the right moment (which makes Mario stand up straight) would make you fly through the floor. I don't know what the game recognizes as the height of a flying Mario except that it is taller than a ducking Mario. Whether it is smaller than a standing Mario I do not know.

When landing on the edge of platforms (especially moving ones) it appears Mario teleports forward several pixels. It is kind of like when you swim just below a platform and the white bubbles show up while you are pushed downwards a little bit, except there is not water or bubbles and you get pushed forwards. Just curious if you knew about it, and if I am actually seeing what I think I am seeing. What I'm getting at is if he teleports forward, that is frames saved at every platform unless it does something wierd to the flight speed jumping. http://img144.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc16&image=3deef_TAS_teleport.JPG

My friend came over to play cs and asked me what his name should be. I typed in "jimsfriend" and never bothered to change it to anything else on my steam account. Then I started using it on D2, forums, morrowind, everywhere I need a name. Sometimes I type it as "friend of jim" though... mix it up a little. Not too much though.

Why do you need Yoshi in the haunted house? You can already jump high enough to reach the big boo fight. There still must be something I am missing.

Why not? Yoshi double jump up to DP1 secret exit. Beat Big Boo and you are in Star World. So what part of this did I miss out on?

I watched the current run again, and here is what I though of. If any of this is already known/common sense oh well. I just posted everything I thought might be able to be improved that I haven't already mentioned. If you don't understand something, I will draw you a pretty picture or try to explain it better. DP2-Fly to the pipe instead of bounce off shell. It is also possible to use the shell to hit a question block with a coin the instant (or thereabouts) after (I think) you hit it with your head and it becomes a multi-hit coin box. Maybe this would work for other boxes, like switches and boxes that release mushrooms and such. It’s raining feathers. DP3-Would it save time to run along the swinging/moving platforms rather than fly. Always hit the platform to make it boost you forward. If it is faster there are other applications for this. DP4 hammer bros platforms? Second time through cheese bridge, ride them like the first time then fly? SW4. VD1-Does flying in the beginning of the level rather than spin jumping make up for the time it takes to regain top speed after the dive bomb? VD2-When bringing the key to the keyhole do not touch the bottom because it greatly reduces Mario’s speed. RSP-Would it be possible to fly in the first room? The coins that turn to blocks are no lower than the hall he flies down in the second room. Also, it might be possible to fly above them then dive down and float along the blocks then drop down right in front of the pipe. VD3-The lack of flight saddens me. Maybe nothing can be done… but I still don’t like it. Lemmy-At 19:19 he gets stuck and has to wait for the ceiling to go back up. Maybe it is possible to fly there, and get underneath it, then jump through the floor and continue flight underneath the level. This brings up an interesting question. Does the game keep track of their existence after they go beneath the screen down into the abyss? If you manage to find a way to skip the GSP and come back for it later you could enter the big red door a little sooner as well. Soda Lake-Hesitation before entering the exit pipe bothers me. Maybe it is necessary, but I always thought you couldn’t take damage while entering a pipe. SW1-Better execution of smashola (if possible), but you already knew this. SW2 secret exit-Maybe there is some flaw in the cape or something. When I do this level as small Mario it is possible to beat it with game clock reading 261. This might also be difference between console and rom. SW3 reg exit-Is it possible to fly by kicking up the silver p-switch after you start flight and save a couple frames by flying to the finish tape? SW5 secret exit-Mario should fly to go faster and use a piranha plant to get out of flight so he can spin jump up to the key area, unless for some reason this is impossible. Gnarly-It might be faster to bring a Yoshi from the level before and use the shell to fly up, stomp the p-switch and continue flying up then ditch Yoshi right before the top so you don’t have to go up as high (by the height of one small Mario), you don’t have to bounce off the song blocks, and you wouldn’t have to go the extra height of one block to stomp the switch. However, getting the Yoshi might take too long. Actually, maybe it would be a good idea to keep the Yoshi. Way Cool-Use the Yoshi you already have so you don’t have to wait for the new one to hatch. If these two levels don’t add up to save time for getting the Yoshi then obviously don’t get it. Funky-Couldn’t you get flight right away by spin caping the piranha plant? Donut Secret House-No Flower Power. I know you know this, I just felt like something was missing until I said this. VS1-Fly up the vine unless you can’t manage to get to the pipe when you do this. Ludwig-Get flight in the first room then break it and jump to the end if possible. FoI1-Get a shell to open the key with. Should be possible w/o losing speed. FoIGH-I’m not sure if jump at fly speed would save time here because you have to be going fly speed to get over that big pillar and dropping down over to the left would ruin it. FSA-I guess it’s not possible to gain flight speed by jumping onto one of those gray platforms and jumping off the other side saving frames because of the momentary boost of the platform moving? Fortress-Flight speed jumping in second room. CGH-I’m sure if you try hard enough you could fly into the first door rather than collide with that ghost and slow you down. CI2-First area might be able to go faster if you drop down right after the Yoshi box so you don’t have to go as far to the right in order to fall down to the pipe. Exit would probably be faster if he didn’t drop the key first because then the key would collide with the keyhole before he did, unless flight while holding object messes with that. Fortress-Flight speed jumping in first room. CI4-Might be able to take advantage of flying underneath the map somehow, idk. Sunken Ship-Enter Yellow pipe sooner, it looks like it should be possible. VoBGH-Do you have to hit the p-switch or could it be faster to just get the p-run then fly below the hall of doors and pull up into the one you want. I don’t think this would be faster, but who knows. Larry-First room better door entrance. The second room, maybe there is nothing to be done but I would think it possible to fly the whole way. VoBGH-Fly in the first room? Is there something I’m missing? VoBFortress-There has to be something to do about those spike crushers. BackDoor+Bowser-You know the drill. I hope there are no errors and I didn't say anything stupid because I was too lazy to reread such a big post. Any reference to "he" or somesuch means VIPer7 run. The levels are listed in order that they show up in the current run for easier reference (I hope). Much of this is just speculation and might not work.

Maybe if taking damage allowed you to jump again if you pressed jump the instant you got hit. Kind of like Metroid 2 but different. Or perhaps jumping the instant you hit the abyss at the bottom allows you to jump across the bottom of the map? I have never been able to do either of these.

You can not spin off the ghosts that fade away. Even when they are not faded. Hey could someone make me a nifty picture/screenshot sequence of JXQ trick?
A guy on SDA said he was going to do Super Mario World small. I was excited to see it, but he's taking his time on releasing it.
That is me. I am taking my time because I don't want anyone to be able to improve it when I am done.

For SMW, right off the top of my head Donut Ghost House Secret Exit can't be done without a cape. Unless you uncover something really really wierd.

You said you are on DP1 and following VIPer7's route. I was just wondering (this has probably been thought of) could you skip the cape in DP1 and get it after the green switch palace and your second time through DP2, which is a sidescroller. I don't know how much time you gain/lose from flying in DP1, so maybe this is a bad idea. However, if you wanted to know which castle getting the green switch palace would mess with, I think you are looking for catle 3. Especially if you are in flight. I don't really remember the overworld route you chose though, it's been a while since I saw it. No response in over an hour, I think I'm going to go into withdrawal.

1. Just mentioned it because it wasn't in the current run. 2. Didn't think this was possible. 3. Figures. 4. I had hoped the lava acted like gray matter. Never thought it would act like water... 5. I don't know what you just said... but I know beating the level this way should work. 6/7/8 comes later 9.
can't fly up through these walls/grounds while flying underneath the level, can you
Yes you can, unless the rom is different from the console, which from what I undersand it shouldn't be. The game does not recognize the underneath side of a floor as a cieling, but it does recognize the above part of the cieling as a floor. I hope you can make sense of that. But keyjumping looks cool :( 10. Wendy trick was always too hard for me. 11. I didn't think this would work, but who knows. Maybe we will get lucky. You will see more of me here as long as SMW is being done. SMV's don't help me though I have no rom and don't really plan on getting one. Consequently all my help will come from explanations and pictures on paint... unless things change. Now about 6/7/8 6 first: Well... obviously you will optimize this, but start on the question blocks. The buzzy beetle should be dead (or at least out of the way). Run left down the slope and partway into the water, jump up a little turn right and fly towards the slope again. Fly through it. If I can do it on console, which I did, then surely it can be done on rom. Under box 2 but not box 4 because (if there are extensions, hard to tell) then going under them would mean Mario had to be on the downward part of his flight pattern. Under box 2 this is plausible. Under box 4 the sides of that gray matter are too close together so you could not be at a down on both of them afaik. Maybe there is some frame-by-frame trick you could do to allow it. Or maybe there are no extensions. I think this covers picture 7 also. The hard part on this for me is getting down beneath the sloped part of the water. I will post a picture to explain. http://img128.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc238&image=146ee_VD2_TAS_help.JPG I hope this clears things up. 8: Dead means that particular buzzy beetle is dead because he was in my way. Step on the one that says "Bring him" and put him on the slope. Get a p-run and fly through the slope while picking him up. Then turn around and jump down that hole in the gray matter to the left, bounce off of him up to the water. Hehe @Gorling.

I don't know what you already know, but I know that some of these things could be/are possible and they aren't in the current video. I made these pictures a while ago, so some things might have changed. http://img135.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=d171f_DGH_secret_exit.JPG This is not purely speculation (what the picture says). I have successfully walljumped up to door A after flying under those two pillars. With the rapid height gain glitch you can probably do it as the picture shows. Of course you will probably want to collect all the coins along the way too? http://img140.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=th_b5910_down_slant.JPG I don't know who discovered the fly through wall trick, but maybe it works on downward slants too? I have never been able to produce it, but I am limited by reflex and skill. I am sure you probably already tried this though... http://img137.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=e6637_DS1_both_exit.JPG Ignore everything about which turtle to grab. The green lettering under the key explains the picture I hope. Swimming under the key exit should be faster because you don't have to throw the shell and then grab it again several times to gain altitude. Unless I missed something that wastes frames? http://img125.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=ba717_under_lava.JPG This one explains itself. Please forgive my lack of knowledge on this kind of thing (poor terminology is because I don't know the proper terms, for example: I don't know what a sprite is). Also, after playing through the game again I realized The lava (this picture is from Wendy's Castle) does not show up onscreen below the black line drawn in the lava. However, I saw in the SDW 100% at 51ish minutes (iirc) it is possible to fly completely under the screen w/o coming up back to be visible. The basic question is whether or not it is possible to fly under lava. http://img143.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=05c70_VD1_last_half.JPG I have confirmed this. I don't know where to come up from under the ground though. It should be faster because unless the picture is out of proportion (which it could be, but I doubt it) then you would be flying the whole time you would otherwise have 2 pipe entrances and 2 times you have to work the p-run back up. IDK where to come up because flying under the screen is hard to say the least. http://img143.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=27f58_VD2_fly_explain.JPG This should be possible, but I have never been able to pull it off. The picture explains itself mostly. Here's another picture of that level: http://img144.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=47b27_VD2_both_exit.JPG for both exits. If those don't work, try this: http://img21.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc178&image=b31e6_SMW_help_VD2.JPG http://img128.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=9ab45_VoB4_reg_exit.JPG If this is possible then it could also be used to do the key exit. Simply grab the key from underneath (gain altitude by flying back and forth in place) and then use the jump_grab key glitch up the pillar on the right of the key hole and put the key in through the wall. This should work, but I wouldn't know for sure. http://img24.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc24&image=676f8_Wendy_s.JPG You might be able to do something with this. Then you wouldn't have to wait for those spike things. I am glad to see that you are going to come back for YI1 and Yellow Palace later, that had always irked me. These pictures were for me and a friend at SDA to discuss SMW, and were created a while ago. Another thing I have been thinking about since I saw Mario swim through a wall by grabbing an item. http://img108.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc264&image=4f6c7_FOI2_both_exit.JPG If this is possible there are probably other applications. If any of these types of possibilities have been mentioned in the SDW thread, sorry I don't read it. Another thing, in YI2 the 10:36 run has the 2 one-ups in the very beginning. I don't know what this does to frame-count (although I do know it would decrease your points) but it is possible to get 5 one-ups using that first shell. That is what I do in my small mario run I am working on for SDA. Again, if you knew this I am sorry, just trying to help. Although it might not "look as cool" or however you would rate whether or not to put it in because then you couldn't use the shell to kill all those moles and football players. Thanks to Stefan Mahrla for the level maps.
