I think it's funny how Captain Forehead complains that The Shawshank Redemption is so underrated and then rates it lower on his list than imdb did. What, no Man On Fire? Perhaps this is because you are a serious man. DarkKobold, my point was that I don't really think this is a special case. There are several games which have large speed running communities that have adopted rules different from ours, and I don't think a reasonable argument can be made for why we should Japanese OoT (and in game time metroid) but not follow the other speed running communities. The few times I have watched sm64 on ustream it has always been in japanese, and recently the world record attempts at smw11 have all been in japanese that I have seen. So it seems to me that to the extent that there is a legitimate reason to use J rom OoT (zelda speed running community does it), there is also legitimate reason to use J rom SMW and sm64. It was not an argument that we should use PAL, as that is not a commonly used rom by the speedrunning community. And spinflying higher isn't the only thing using PAL adds to smw anyway. Oscillating speed no longer follows trivial rules, maximum speed is higher (hence why you can jump higher), and it probably makes it easier to clip through walls because of that, etc.

The many people in the OoT community who will think SwordlessLink is god for the next week or so will think we are a bunch of crazy sillyfaces with our thumbs up our collective asses and likely fewer of the people who would have had interest in this site that SL thinks is important enough to submit his run to will come here to see what other awesome things we have for their other games because a thumbass guy probably isn't worth collaborating with. Tasvideos does not get more ad revenue and adelikat has to drink water. DarkKobold can not water his plants, because adelikat drank it :( This post contains exaggerations.

It might have stronger implications than "enter level the same number of times as exits". Suppose you have two paths through Mystery World which both lead to Mystery World Castle. The normal route is two levels long, with a very long autoscroller immediately prior to the castle. The secret route has five short levels, the first of which has opportunity to get a goal sphere. If the goal is "minimize overworld time" then the normal route *must* be taken first, and the secret route second. If the goal is "enter level same number of times as it has exits" then you can get the goal sphere at the secret route and go use it on the autoscroller in the normal route. I don't know if this would affect smw specifically, but it might and that is worth considering. Additionally worth thinking about, is that if whatever rule gets determined as the one that should be used is now simply considered part of the 100% run goals of all games on the SMW engine since they could all have potential for goal sphere abuse, it could have implications on hacks. Specifically, sdw120 does not minimize overworld movements, and it does enter levels more times than those levels have exits (getting a key at Boo's Secret).

mi2 (small thing): on the down slope right before the midway gate it is possible to get a 6/4 cycle rather than a 6/5 cycle. If you jump on the slope twice, you get two 6/4 cycles, so you are potentially spending two more frames at max speed. Is that enough to save a frame? dsw and skysw, may not be possible.: Use shyguy instead of yellow shell in dsw. Shyguy stays shy for ~500 frames. Now, since you have shell in reserve still, you can not get cape, so it will be difficult to get to the exit tape (or impossible). There are 3 shyguys near the beginning. Use one in place of yellow shell, and the two others as guys who boost you to jump higher. Throw 2nd shyguy up in the air, then jump up with 3rd shyguy and bounce off 2nd shyguy, near peak of that bounce, bounce off the 3rd shyguy. If this is possible and works, you would have fire flower for wsw (should not make you slower) and csw (will slow you down some). Then in skysw you can use the shell to make yoshi wings. You will have to drop the shell at the beginning and carry it on yoshi's tongue because you need to take the cape at the beginning of the level. If all of that, excluding the 1st shyguy waking back up, costs more than 469 frames then it will be slower :(. 469 is based on your saying you lost 969 frames as skysw and it taking ~500 frames for shyguy to wake up so you can bounce off of him.

They want the number of times they enter a level to be not greater than the number of exits for that level. This would allow use of goal sphere, but would avoid dozens of extra map moves that the goal sphere otherwise would require for a fastest completion. Personally I think the decision would be made for similar reason why the small mario run avoids switch palaces: maximize variation to hopefully increase entertainment, while also preventing the run from being trivial. I don't claim to speak for them, this just appears to be the reasoning.
