You've never actually tried playing this game on an NES, obviously. There are many ways to describe Kid Niki... mostly involving words like "rad" and "irritating" and also "extremely rad".... but "way too easy" is certainly not one of them. Back in the 80s this game drove kids crazy, and nobody ever saw the final few stages due to the one-hit-kill and random nature of the collision detection and enemy patterns. Much sadness and rage ensued, but it was one of the 35 or so games that were around at the time and we had to make do with it as we waited for better games to come out. I know the game is old and relatively simple, but I don't think it's THAT boring. But maybe nostaligia is clouding my judgement, I dunno. I still think decent runs that are disliked due to personal tastes are what the "Meh" vote is for. If not, what IS it for?

What the Christ. Already two "no" votes based more on the opinion of the game than the actual quality of the run? Whatever. Videos of infinitely more boring games have already been published on this site, but if this trend continues, I'll go ahead and withdraw this.

I've been wanting to see PC Engine rerecording for a long time! We need TASes of Bonk's Adventure. And Pac-Land. The PC Engine is the only console with a good version of Pac-Land. If you attempt to play the NES version, your head will melt. Begs the question, though... Would it also be feasable to include CD games in this? With Gens, savestates sort of work with Sega CDs, sometimes. I don't think anyone's attempted a TAS with any of them. There aren't really any Sega CDs worthy of one anyway, but the PC Engine has stuff like Ys and, of course, Dracula X.

I haven't seen this yet, but I will! I'd like to see someone attempt a proper 100% run on this too, though. It'd take some planning but it's really quite do-able. The requirements: -Score exactly 200000 points before the final stage -Get the strength upgrades in 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, and 3-1 -Defeat 3 of the Training Rooms (out of 4 total) -Have 999 hearts by the end of the game I actually made a not-great-but-decent 100% run myself some time ago, with a final score of 202400 or something like that. But it was a VirtuaNES video. =( That emulator never really took off, did it?

When you fought the giant bee mini-boss in stage 2-1. It was starting its flying attack before he could give it a fourth cannon hit, during that flying attack it's offscreen for too long so it wouldn't have taken the full damage from the cannon while it was flying forward (would have been out of range too early). He'd have wasted the time for the chargeup animation and not finished the boss off any faster.
That was unfortunate, especially when in an earlier version of the run, I got two laser upgrades rather than Laser and Booster, which made the Laser JUST powerful enough to squeeze in another EX Cannon before the bee goes offscreen. Not having the Booster upgrade would have sacrificed several other tricks earlier in the movie, however. Generally, in "Laser-only" boss fights, I switch back to the regular laser once they're so low on health, another cannon shot would kill them long before it finishes firing. It takes about the same time, with the EX charging animation factored in, and gives them a chance to get off SOME shots for me to dodge.

This is all well and good, but I REALLY want to see a speedrun video of the CDI Zelda game.

I see nothing wrong with Truncated approving his own video! Videos by the other mods get published quickly too, right?

Eh... If they really want me too, I will. But the game isn't really finished no matter where I stop it, so I figured it doesn't really matter. And stopping it right after the final blow is always the most impressive way to do it.

Pinball Quest! =D I love this little game, and this video DOES show a completion time that would be completely impossible for a normal human. Yes from me.

I made a NZS speedrun video just for fun in the past, but even then, my general impression of the game was that it was slow, slow, slow... The kiwi walks slow, jumps slow, falls down slow, and swims REALLY slow. Slowwwwwwwww... But then, slower games have been published. And with the fast-forward button, it's not too bad. Maybe it should be encoded in fast-forward.

Why you have done it on Genesis? Genesis sucks. Snes is a lot better. I am voting no because of that.
First, GENESIS ROCKS!!! I think that movie must be judged by its quality technique, and not for the used system. An excellent movie, YES from me.
First, GENESIS SUCKS!!!
LOOK, I'm sick of this crap! Genesis was a fine band, and Phil Collins had less to do with its commercialization than most people seem to think. And even after it went commercial, it has some great songs like Domino and Jesus He Knows Me, so lay off already!

Thank you! Here, this is a gallery I made of the game's cinemas. They might help y'all understand what's truly going on in the game. http://ohnolookoutitsaraygun.com/elviento/

Seriously though, the existance of this hack interests me, and I'd like to try playing it myself before I watch a speedrun video, so I'll abstain for now.

Maybe Kyrsi is right and I'm just finding the improvements harder to notice 'cause I'm all antsy about my El Viento improvement sitting in the queue forever FOR THE LOVE OF GOD SOMEBODY ENCODE IT ALREADY... or not, I dunno. =) I did mention this in the WL4 thread too, but I'd love to encode stuff myself, but whenever I try to use the AVI recording built into the emulators, I pick one of the recommended compression methods and end up with 200 meg files, which I know is too big. Trying other passes and chaging the settings and all doesn't seem to do anything. I just don't get it. Is there an "Encoding for Dummies" tutorial somewhere?

http://ohnolookoutitsaraygun.com/FasterAstroBoy.zip Now with a Booster upgrade and strategic use of the Kick, which turned out to be a more valuable move for speedrunning than I thought. I made this a little while back, and it'll probably be my last update for a while since I have to cut back on games for an indefinite amount of time. (got Repetitive Stress Disorder in my right arm. =|) I probably will continue this sometime, though. Oy vey! When I do continue it, I'll be going back and redoing the part starting where I got Magma's Omega Upgrade, choosing "Punch" instead of "Laser". It turned out the Ex Laser actually makes the fight with Pook slower (except for his Bahamute form), and there's a lot of punching to do in stage 3, up until the fight with Atlas, but there are three Omega upgrades in that stage which I can apply toward the laser. They're all optional, so I may not get all three. Tough call.

I have to say I am kind of baffled at how defiantly ignored this submission has been. Wario's not even a particularly obscure series. And GBA games really should take priority since they're recent and harder to find. I tried to figure the encoding thing out, so I could help contribute instead of just raising a stink about it, but I just can't. Everything I try results in files that aren't compressed enough, and the filesize never seems to change no matter how many passes I do or what settings I use. I just don't "get" encoding. =( So I made a post in General about this, 'cause I can't think of anything else to do.

Sorry to say this, but it seems like things haven't improved at all in this area. Did y'all give up on this? Truncated's been doing a good job cleaning out and approving some of the old submissions, but it hardly does any good if the people doing the actual encoding are going to ignore his approvals and continue publishing the same few movies they feel like publishing.

I vote a weak "yes". This game didn't seem all that speed-runnable to me. It's an action-adventure, but a lot more slow-paced than the likes of Zelda since a lot of the enemies come at you one at a time. However, I really liked all the boss fights and and seeing the strategy of beating the game without leveling up was pretty interesting. Sure, it's not as fun as the runs of Super Mario Bros. and Sonic, but it's a lot more interesting than the runs of FF Mystic Quest and Dragon Warrior, and if those got published, I don't see why this shouldn't.

"TAS" rhymes with "ASS" and people love asses.
In fact, before even signing up on the forums, I tried to do a run of this game - it was 1-player and didn't use turbo mode (imagine how not fun THAT was to watch...), not to mention it suffered from a lot of desyncing.
Wow... I did the same thing a long time ago... One player, no turbo, lots of desynching. I ended up concluding that the game made for a boring video and shouldn't be bothered with, but I have been proven wrong!

http://ohnolookoutitsaraygun.com/HardAstroBoy.zip for a runthrough of the first stage in Hard Mode. Can't say my opinion's changed much, to be honest. The strategy had to change slightly here and there, but for the most part it is just slower than Normal mode without being more entertaining, and it'd probably just get worse later on, especially in the shooter stages and the stages with multiple boss fights. The "wow" factor doesn't do much for me, not to mention the game doesn't get really, REALLY hard until Rebirth, which probably won't be bothered with. That's my opinion, though. =)
