Unlike other boards, most of our discussion tends to be civil and doesn't need a lot of moderating. So this idea would be totally unnecessary.

I can't tell if this is a moderately good trolling, or a 6 year old.

No (I have a well paying job which I enjoy, a wife, and I'm very content) No Not really. Life is full of them, and the ones that piss me off I try and avoid, but you either learn to deal with them or run away. Time to completion or time of movie? Time to completion varies greatly depending on the game, motivation, etc. My average time of movies for me is 11:34.56 It's a hobby, so I do it when I have time and motivation. Lately, I haven't had either :(

Bonus points: Launch VBA and run the SMS (or any other) emulator from within that one. 4!

These games always leave me with a "That was it?" type feeling, because of the lack of any definitive ending... she just goes through another door and the credits roll. But the acrobatics are sure good. I give this a meh just because of the game, not due to any fault of the author.

It was very weird, but not in an entertaining way for me. It was basically a WarioWare game with humor that I didn't understand. Voting no.

It seems to be a common theme over the last year or so that since fewer movies have been submitted that we must dumb down our criteria for acceptance.
There have also been many vocal arguments towards the opposite extreme: We should publish a movie for every game. Trying to appease everyone just doesn't work. I have noticed in the past year that my judging criteria have gradually transformed into somewhat more lenient with publishing movies that are likely to entertain a majority of people, even if they aren't entertaining to everyone. This is in part due to the increased visibility of the site, which leads to a more diverse range of tastes in entertainment present (people don't just come here for the SMB3 or SM64 movies anymore).

Given that information, I think this would be a good addition to the site. Thanks for clearing that up Kumquat!

Since one of my runs is being brought up, I guess I should weigh in. The solitaire movie is somewhat different than this one in terms of "super-human" play in that knowledge of which cards are where is vital to the TASer, while with a cube you have all the information available to you at the start. It is very possible to lose that very hand of solitaire I played through "normal" play, which I did a couple of times throughout the making of that movie. While I don't believe that it would be possible to pull off this TAS in real life, the thing that decreases some of the entertainment for me is the lack of the unforeseen. I see this movie as a big brother of the Myst TAS: there was a lot more "route" planning involved, but in the end the mechanics are very similar. One thing I'm not aware of that could sway my opinion greatly is how easy it is to start a 4x4x4 puzzle with different configurations. If the same configuration comes up all the time it's much less interesting than if every time you get to that level there's a different alignment. If the second scenario is the case with this game, I do this this should be published, as it could potentially lead to luck manipulation for better starting cube configurations and faster routes. If the configuration is not unique to each game played, then I agree with adelikat's decision. EDIT: I just read through the movie description and see that some luck manip is possible, but I'm not clear on how much. Clarification from the authors would be appreciated.

Proper sleep involves REM activation, not just alpha or beta patterns to develop (which after 10 days you'd have all the time, I believe). REM sleep will kick in with decreased time of alpha/beta patterns as fatigue increases, but there needs to be a lot more than just one or two minutes to actually "rest" you. There is an interesting 'life hack' floating around that promotes 6 regular, 30 minute naps during the day, which supposedly allows for total elimination of normal sleep, however I've never tried it, nor do I know of any studies to back it up. In short, one person is not physiologically able to complete this game, no matter how many piss bottles they have or minute-naps they take.

Even though many of our submissions do aim for speed, a good play-around certainly has the opportunity of being published. Viewer feedback is the biggest decider for those types of runs. I haven't watched the YT link yet, but if you feel like it's entertaining, submit it! I'm sure others would too.

As has been the goal since the first iteration of this run, speed is the primary goal, score is the secondary goal, meaning that if the runner is able to complete the game faster at the expense of score, he should. However, if speed is not lost by scoring points, then the maximum points should be attempted.

^This. The small amounts of money that exchange hands for the smaller prizes would seem to be nothing but a hassle for me. If there's really a lot of money left over, upgrade the server or something. If there absolutely has to be monetary gain to go along with the awards, I'd suggest just limiting it to TAS of the year and TASer of the year.

Quick question: In my goodset for SMS, I only have an (E) ROM version, while in the submission text you mention that you used the NTSC version. However, mine synced just fine, which I find strange. Are you sure you used a (U) version? EDIT: Or, did you mistakenly run the (E) ROM under NTSC settings in Dega?

How about I correct that and say there are 16 new submissions within the past 7 days? People bitch when we judge too fast, and they bitch when we judge too slow... just know that they'll get done. Hopefully a good portion of them will be dealt with tomorrow.

At the time of writing this, there are two published NES Tetris TASes: "Fastest 999999" and "Mode B". These two, in combination with a published Tetris DX TAS lead me to cancel my Gameboy Tetris submission to avoid the impending rejection due to "too much Tetris movies". In the meantime a Tetris DS submission was published, which begged the question what to do with my current Tetris "playaround" submission.
Not quite. I was ready to reject it because it didn't add anything different to the site. We already had a gameboy tetris run with the same (or very similar) goals, and not much to differentiate the regular GB run other than nostalgia factor. Your current playaround does add something new, different, and entertaining, and I would be happy to have it published :)

Since this thread seems to be destined to be revived at some point, I'd like to ask this of the people who found this entertaining: Did you also like Wario Ware, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!? It is a game that has a similar concept, with timed events and tool assisted play being very similar to unassisted play. If the Myst DS run happens to be revisited sometime in the future, why shouldn't the WarioWare run be re-examined as well, despite the very low percentage of people finding it entertaining?

I would like to genuinely apologize to those of you who were psychologically and/or emotionally hurt by this event. It was never mine, nor any one else's, intent to cause grief through our words, and I had hoped that we threw out enough over-the-top melodrama and red flags to indicate that it wasn't true. However, just because it is not true that we're shutting down the site doesn't mean that this was just a joke. It brought up some important talking points regarding the future, and sometimes stirring up the wasp's nest is the best way to get people's attention. In the same vein, this was not meant to be a money-making venture either, or at least not one motivated by fear. Since this site transferred ownership, donations have been needed to keep us going, and thanks to the generosity of several members, we're approaching our first year anniversary of being 'out on our own'. Donations are an on-going necessity, and I believe that the past day or two have shown that many, many people would be affected by having the site cease to exist. So I guess what I'm trying to say is: If you truly like something, try to find ways within your means to support it, through donations, time, effort and input. Within the past two days we've seen a spike of new members who have registered just to plead with us to not shut down the site. This give me a great amount of hope for the future, but it also makes me rather sad too. So many people have been enjoying what we've produced, but have not bothered to register until confronted with the possibility that TASvideos.org may be finite and mortal. Please, for everyone who has recently registered to show their support for keeping this site going, or for anyone who has been lurking but has never gotten around to registering, contribute! I don't care how much or in what capacity. If you know a lot about a game and see that it doesn't have a tricks page with documentation, we'd be grateful for your information. If you think movie descriptions could be improved, write it up and we'll add it. This site thrives on the input of its users, and with the changes that have been made over the past year we're in need of more help to maintain the content than ever before. So please, whatever you feel you can pitch in, please do. And please know that we will never threaten to shut down the site in order to raise donations, but continue to be aware that the admins can't do it on their own, as much as we may want to. On a slightly related note, a topic that has been brought up several times in this and the other thread is the lack of games to TAS because "all the good ones are gone", or that TASvideos is always reduced down to a frame-war. So I'd like to address those issues as well. We have a huge amount of new consoles that are now TASable, and a ridiculous amount of games for some of the 'newer old' consoles which remain untapped (looking at you, GBA). I realize that some people only want to work on a certain system, and for the oldest consoles we have, we may actually be running out of content. But as I've said on my homepage for no less than two years, if someone produces a run of a game which does not have a published movie, and that people find entertaining, it has a very good shot at getting published, and I'm likely to be much less restrictive with my judgment when it comes to technical ability. Please leave mystDS out of this, it's a separate issue entirely New, entertaining content is always cut a bit more slack, and I personally never expect someone to try to make a frame-perfect run of a new game (some people like to aim for that, but that's their prerogative, not mine). If you're trying to improve a game that has several previous versions, yeah, it had better be very, very tight. But at least 60-70% of the content on this site could be improved by a surprisingly big margin, and because of conversations that have been brought up recently, we now have rules/guidelines in place to deal with improvements that aren't "perfect". Reasonable effort will have a reasonable chance at publication. I think I've covered everything that has come to mind after reading through the half dozen pages of conversation, but if you ever have questions regarding anything based on the site, please ask me. Thank you everyone for your vocal support of our site, and I hope that this year can continue to see TASvideos grow for the better.

I'd rather have the input files because they take up less space, and I can still watch them via emulator for the entertainment value. 500 some-odd encodes is not very HDD friendly.

Yeah, I don't see the harm in that. People can harvest their favorite TAS input files and encodes for future watching. And it may help to give some people closure.

I agree :( I've poured quite a bit of time into this hobby, but it's not something I'm likely to continue without a dedicate site to showcase mine, and others, works. It has become one of the main ways I spend my spare time since I joined in late 2006, and I'm sad to see it go. :( I guess there's always youtube...
