Well I was going to look into this further, but Dega refuses to let me load a movie. Instead, it prefers to crash right after navigating to where the movie is. If someone else could weigh in on the method of recording (i.e. PAL ROM in NTSC mode), I'd appreciate it.

I have OS X on my G5 iMac (~4 years old), and prefer to use it. I have XP on my laptop (~ 2.5 years old), and can tolerate it. When I purchase my next computer, I will be buying another Apple product, because I have absolutely no interest in upgrading anything in my computer (outside of RAM), and because I will be able to virtualize XP to allow me to continue to use emulators, which is the only unique task I use XP for anyway. I have no interest in using either Vista or Win 7 until it becomes the operating system of choice for the majority of the US. And considering that XP has been out for 7 or so years and people still prefer to downgrade to it rather than get Vista, I don't see me switching any time soon.

A better question is why is this topic still going? It's pointless, and everybody's perception of what's hard is going to be different and biased.
Quit whining, good discussion never hurt anyone. The hardest game to TAS (i.e. Come as close to "perfection" as possible) has these, and probably other, characteristics:
*Is in 3D (three planes of motion is harder to control than two) *Has several different ways to travel, with small to medium differences in acceleration, top velocity, and turning speed. *Has random lag frames *Has multiple random number generators controlling everything from enemy placement, to wind simulation, to room transition time. *Has controls which update input randomly *Has decent programming, without major (game-breaking) glitches, but has several small oversights and multiple applications of these oversights.
And so on. I don't think this game has been made yet, but if it has, I doubt anyone has been masochistic enough to try and TAS it.

For the record, I agree with the decision (and the reasons behind it) and I knew full well that the run was most likely headed this way when it was submitted. This didn't prevent me from working on it, as I wanted to have a Tails TAS even if it were never published; that several people liked it was an added bonus.
Like moozooh said, that is very cool of you to have that mind-set, and I very much appreciate your open-mindedness. Like I said, I hope you continue to TAS, as it looks like you have a good understanding of it.

mega_man_3! I'm sorry to see that your WIP didn't go through like it should have! Here are some step by step directions for you to follow: Go here: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php Click "Browse" Find your movie file, and highlight it, and click "Open" Write a comment if you wish, then click "Upload" You should see the text "Your file can be accessed using..." and a link. Copy that link and paste it in a new message in this thread! You shouldn't have any problems after that! We're all looking forward to your work!

This mirrors my decision making. There was arguably more entertainment in the knuckles run (yes, yes, I know it's subjective, but whatever), because less time was spent flying over the levels.

This one preeventively received a green light from Bisqwit himself, though: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=180816#180816.
Meaning that this hack met his requirements to avoid automatic rejection, not that a run using the hack would necessarily need to be accepted.

Checking the edit logs, it appears that there was a timespan of almost 50 minutes where there was only one submission in the queue. Was it ever this empty since the first time there were two submissions in the queue?
Yeah, this morning was special:) We were rushing to get it to 0, but then a few surprise submissions popped up. Oh well. AFAIK, 1 is almost certainly the least amount ever in the queue, because I'm sure that it started out with a few in it when the queue was initiated.

Sucking is such a relative term. 0.98.12 was absolutely horrendous for attempting to make an accurate TAS. FCEUX is much better, and is probably the most complete emulator around, with the most options (followed closely by Gens). If the emulation core has changed slowly over the version, then say so. Don't insult an emulator and those who have worked hard to make it better by making claims without backing it up with some sort of evidence.

If this were a normal game, I wouldn't have a very good answer for you. As this is a hack, as is the run I compared it to, I can easily say yes, the one that was submitted first holds a distinct advantage over subsequent submissions. There are an infinite number of hacks available for submission, and accepting a run of each hack would be ridiculous. So because this run is 80% like a run already published, I saw no need to add it to the collection.

While I share your concern for quick publication of movies, I believe that Aqfaq has been sitting on this improvement for some time, and was avoiding submission because of the small ratio of improvement. It is very unlikely for an outside source to find improvements for this game, and if Aqfaq/Stanski haven't been able to find new techniques after sitting on this one for a while, I don't really forsee an update soon. However, I will probably be proven wrong in the next 24 hours... :/ Additionally, I hold no power on when a movie gets published, other than giving the initial go-ahead. I'll chat with Shinydoofy to postpone publication for a little while.

I enjoyed it, and it handily beats the current unassisted records. A 5.5/7.5 in my book.

And all he did was point out the existence of TSC, and was in no way bashing you. He brought up very valid points in a very approachable way, and you immediately jumped on him because you assume he has some sort of personal vendetta against you, when it's much more likely that he just really likes sonic.

He's not bashing you, nowhere in his posts did he make any sort of personal attack. One of the first things you should do before submitting a TAS is to make sure it beats non-assisted times, especially if it's for a well known series like sonic games.

I'm getting around to it, just slowly. It's a particularly hard submission because the reception has been lukewarm, for the most part. And decisions on those types always lead to drama.

One thing I noticed that I failed to do on my very first attempt at TASing was the placement of your character at the finish line of each level. Since he always heads to the left side of the screen, did you test to see if delaying the moment you touch the finish-line would be helpful in order to maintain a position closer to the left side of the screen? This could help reduce the time that the character moves from the spot you lose control of him to the spot he ends up at the very end of the level sequence. I realized that some of the levels have scrolling properties that keeps the character in the middle of the screen, but it seemed like the end of some levels didn't have this effect. I'm sure you probably looked into this already, but I just wanted to make sure. In any case, great job, and I took the liberty of accepting this run already.

I have been tossing around my thoughts on this submission, and I figured that the best way I could get an idea for publication appropriateness was to compare it to its (spiritual) predecessor, the knuckles hack of sonic 1. I decided to compare the two runs on an act by act basis, and came up with the following observations. *Green Hill Zone is largely identical to the knuckles hack, except for the artificial limitation that this hack implements in GH2 (the invisible wall preventing the zipping trick) *Marble Zone is also largely identical to the knuckles run, with some minor changes due to the differences between flying and gliding. *Spring Yard Zone has several parts that are different from the knuckles run, however they all involve flying over the level, and very little 'actual playing'. This, to me, is much less entertaining in a hack than in a clean game. *Labyrinth Zone has one zipping trick swapped out for another zipping trick in the second act, but otherwise the levels are nearly identical. *Star Light Zone is also practically identical, with slightly more flying over the level in act 2. More gameplay is evident in the tails version of act 3, but the knuckles version has a very short and unexpected clipping glitch. Scrap Brain Zone exhibits a nice zipping glitch in the tails version in act 2 and 3, although I *think* that the one in act 3 could be implemented in an updated knuckles run (not sure). Overall, this run provides very little new material to the site. It is certainly of high enough quality to warrant publication, but I think it's way too similar to an already published run.

After a few months of using the new system, I have to admit that it is deeply flawed. Much like communism, the rating system works great in theory, but utterly fails when it is applied in the real world. Many borderline submissions are artificially bolstered by people who are seemingly unable to make intelligent ratings, such as shown here and here. The ratings of recently published movies have become incredibly inflated, and have rendered the entire idea of ratings nearly useless (many people would argue that the technical rating was useless beforehand, but that's already been covered). One recent example is adelikat's Earnest Evans, which jumped by nearly 2 full points. As I was the one who proposed the new system, I figured that I would be the best person to say that it simply isn't working out well. While the yes/no/meh system also had its flaws, I don't believe this system is any better, and has caused the ratings system to become even less reliable and helpful. I don't know what the best solution would be, but as of right now, I'm starting to think that removing the polls altogether and making people voice their opinions through a post would be the best. But seeing as how I proposed the current system, I may not be the best person to listen to at the moment. I don't think that any system we implement will be perfect, but the current system has been too polluted by non-discriminatory raters to be of any use. Any ideas on how to make the submission discussion more productive and less crappy?

Does it make more sense to continue with this current path you're taking, or try a couple different free video players? Yes, change isn't fun sometimes, but they're free. If we were promoting some proprietary format that required payment of some kind, you'd have a valid complaint. But it would probably be more time efficient to just try and download something new.

SM64 also happens to be one of the few N64 games that hexes properly, not to mention CBFD was one of the last N64 games released, when developers were squeezing as much out of the console as possible. This means there's a lot more stuff going on in it to affect sync stability (when compared to SM64).
