I have a rather unique experience with Dell laptops. I personally have had absolutely no problems with mine over the past two years, other than horrible battery life (and lifespan), as someone mentioned. However, my laptop is one of 54 others that were purchased by my grad school program for the students, and many, many of my classmates have had issues (involving hard drive failures, wireless antenna problems, and a LCD issue or two). The only customer service I've had with them has been fine, but it was only to request a new battery since my first one died before the 1 year warranty was over. I personally would buy a Macbook pro if I could, because I'm a firm believer in the quality of Apple products, and they have excellent customer service. But you may not have the desire to go that route.

Occam's Razor, this is not. You do a pretty good job of sounding like a jackass though. As far as the .m64 goes, I doubt that one will surface (possibly due to faked-ness, and possibly due to both Vista and Mupen sucking), but if the techniques truly are possible in real time, I doubt it will take long for them to be reproduced.

My sarcasm seems to have gone unnoticed (yes, I knew you were talking about the version of the cart. I was pointing out that the version of the cart wouldn't matter if all he did was slap a gameshark on it. *sigh*) In any case, to answer your question, there are only four version of Super Mario 64 with the [!] moniker: (U), (J), (E), and Shindou Edition (J) [!]. And if one version had such substantially different physics than all the others, I would assume that there would also be noticeable differences in normal gameplay. This isn't to say that the trick couldn't be legit, but it's highly unlikely.

As has been stated several times in the past 20 responses, it's likely that he's using a version very similar to this:

So why isn't this labeled as a co-authored movie?

I apologize for not having gotten to this run yet. I have not had time to figure out my desync issues, but even if I had, I wouldn't have had any time to actually watch the whole run. I will put it on the top of my TAS priority list though. EDIT: I finally got around to watching this, sorry for the delay. I had to rely on the encode (thanks Shinydoofy!), because I could never get 1.51 to function properly. There were quite a few cool moments, but the constant backtracking got old after the first half of the movie, which lowered the entertainment value for me. Technically, it looked well done, although the first box puzzle seemed to include some unneeded moves (totally based on observation). In any case, I think it's a well done movie that belongs on the site.

That's one of the coolest things I've seen in a while :) I assume you can combine that trick with the technique used to get a foreward facing superslide? Because that would be pretty awesome. EDIT: AKA seemed to be thinking the same thing.

Heh, it already looks better than the N64 run. Do you have a projected total time?

Interesting movie. I don't think it's nearly as perfect as many of the raters have seemed to indicated, as the glitch jumping looked somewhat unoptimized, and I'm pretty sure the spider boss could have been handled faster. However, it is a broken game, and a well done run. Good job max12187566.

That isn't a bug. One is for the integer, one is for the decimal, so now you can have more specific ratings (i.e. 9.1 or 5.7)

Only one rating so far? I'll go ahead and make it two. Other than the annoying jumping in the first couple of levels, this is a solid platformer movie. I enjoyed the variety of weapons and antics during the autoscroller levels. Giving this a solid 6.7 for entertainment, and 7.8 for technical.

Self depreciation isn't a way to get you noticed in a positive light. It only serves to produce a negative view of your attitude.

You don't seem to be happy with just a simple thank you. I'm not quite sure what's going on, but I'm getting the feeling that you expect more from the people who download your encodes, or something. But you seem to be forgetting that anyone who is involved with this site is acting as a volunteer, because they enjoy providing the content. None of us get paid, or otherwise compensated. You've gotten thanked several times, which is much more than what many other people get. So I'd suggest getting off your high horse. If you truly want to provide encodes for people who can't get the movie by some other means, that's great. But no one is forcing you to. If it isn't making you happy to make those encodes, then don't.

I have always rated both entertainment and technical categories when I vote, so I went back to check the submission thread. There's only 1 vote, with a 5 for entertainment, and a 7 for technical, and I believe that is what I rated it. So this seems to be a problem with the ratings from the submission not being transferred over once the movie is published. I have also never had a problem with rating a movie after it has been published, but unless 4 other people actually rated that movie as 0 in technical, it can't be a problem solely from transference of ratings from the submission thread (since there was only 1 rating, which happened to by mine).

Since we're just going with random guesses, I'll just say that it will probably be sooner or later, maybe.

I still see mostly 0's for tech score for the only couple of movies to have been published since the new rating system was implemented: http://tasvideos.org/rating.exe/1196/details http://tasvideos.org/rating.exe/1195/details Any particular reason why this are still goofy? Is it because those particular tech ratings have decimals, and the published movie rating system doesn't accommodate decimals yet?

This game could have been quite boring, but the glitches add quite a bit of entertainment value to the run. The purple blob turning into a woman who morphs into a man without legs had me laughing. The health management was excellent, especially while underwater. I did have a question though: At around frame 44,000, you cross a bridge without walking along the railing like you did earlier in the movie, making me think that you accidentally moved downward too far before turning right to cross the bridge. I'm assuming there is a reason for this, but it stuck out to me as somewhat odd. I had a desync at around frame 55,000, switched over to SNES9x 1.51 v5, and it got up to frame 58,000 before desynching again. I liked what I saw for the first 40% of the movie, so I'll try to work with my setup for a bit and see if I can't get these sync issues worked out.

No luck manipulation
This is a huge red flag. I don't know as much about the GBA Castlevania games, but I know that they are a good exercise in luck manipulation, and the fact that you didn't use it leads me to believe that this is going to be very unoptimized. Another problem is the ROM you used. For some reason, you chose to use a '2 games in 1' ROM, while the normal one is easy to find. Also, you broke the Rules by using and (E) ROM instead of the standard (U). Lastly, I'm not sure what the goals are in this run, because I don't know whether the "Concerto" route has anything to offer. But considering that we have 3 runs of this game already, I'm not sure whether we need a fourth, unless this route shows off some really kickass stuff. All of this is said without having watched the run, which I will do, and edit my post. In the mean time, could you provide a little more information about the points I brought up?

I was only able to watch through 100k frames of this (in two sittings) before I couldn't stand it anymore. No offense to the author, but this is just a bad, bad game choice. It is repetitive to the max, and the random killings don't really do much to spruce up the run, since they're some of the worst "death" animations I've seen. All in all I don't think that this game is anywhere near publish-worthy, due to how unbelievably boring it is. Technically, it looked ok, although there were several places where Y-turns were used when it didn't really look necessary, and the constant corrections when driving east/west got annoying (I noticed that they weren't needed when heading north/south). Anyway, I hope you continue your TASing in the future, as you certainly have shown the dedication for it, but I hope you chose a more exciting and less repetitive game for you next run.

I avoided the pause caused by the input termination bug by replacing the ZA with an A, making Mario hit the star earlier. http://www.box.net/shared/mpyrglgdsg
If this still doesn't fix it, check your PM box.
That file works fine, I'll set this to accepted with a link to that for whoever formally encodes this for publication.

I'm not sure. I just downloaded the zipped file linked to from the submission, and played it with the same Mupen I've used for every other Mario 64 submission prior to this. If there is some fixed movie file that hasn't been updated on the submission page that I'm not aware of, please link it to me so that I can take another look.

Is watching an encode "not allowed" to judge it?
An encoder needs a fully functioning .m64 to correctly encode the movie, along with the need for a correctly functioning .m64 for publication purposes (i.e. the movie file linked to on the publication page). We all know the quality of the run is good, which is why I'm just going to let zOMG and SilentSlayers find a workaround, instead of outright rejecting the submission due to the file not completing the game.
